How do I know it is true?

Question:

I don’t know anything about this stuff. I’ve never gone to church before and someone’s been telling me about salvation and the Bible and things. How can someone like me believe the things the Bible says? To me it’s like someone telling me that everything in Cinderella is true and I should believe it! I’m not mocking. I just want to understand and would like someone to explain to me before I start taking the Bible for face value, that it really is true and not just a bunch of stories that different people made up and decided to make a book out of. Can you help me to understand?

Answer:

Belief starts with hearing and learning what the Bible says. The Bible says in Romans 10:13, 14 says, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?”

Faith comes from reading and hearing the Bible. Romans 10:17 says, “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” If you are truly sincere in wanting to know if what the Bible says is true, then you are going to have to read and study it for yourself. Acts 17:11 says, “These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.” The Bible also says in John 7:17, “If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.”

So now you are left with a decision. Psalm 34:8 says, “O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.”

I would encourage you to read in the New Testament in the Gospel of John. When you get finished, read the Book of Romans.

I Corinthians 15:1-4 says, “Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures.” Luke 13:3 says, “I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.” Romans 10:9-11 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.”

I would encourage you to repent of your sin and receive the Lord Jesus Christ as your Savior today. II Corinthians 6:2 says, “Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.”
