Chapter 2

D. Some verses are changed and corrupted in the NIV. (continued)

#16 — 2 Timothy 2:15

KJV (King James Version)    -   “__________ to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”

NIV (New International Version)    -   “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.”

NWT (New World Translation — Jehovah’s Witnesses)   -   “Do your utmost to present yourself approved to God, a workman with nothing to be ashamed of, handling the word of the truth aright.”

Note:   What is so hard to understand about the word study? Is that an Old English word? The translators of the NIV followed the Jehovah’s Witnesses with the same thought.    The word study means, “a careful examination or analysis” (Merriam-Webster’s 11th Collegiate Dictionary).   People are prone to give excuses when they do not do well on a test. They may say that they “did their best” or “did their utmost,” but the fact remains that many times they did not really study the material — they did not do “a careful examination or analysis” of the material.

The word study   did not need to be changed in the text — it simply needed

to be obeyed.   It is not a lack of understanding  that is the problem here.

The problem here is a lack of ambition  on the part of many people.

    1. Ecclesiastes 12:12 says, “And further, by these, my son, be admonished: of making many books there is no end; and much __________ is a __________________ of the flesh.”
    2. Acts 17:11 says, “These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and ________________ the scriptures __________, whether those things were so.”

#17 — John 3:13

KJV (King James Version)    -   “And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is ____    ____________.”

NIV (New International Version)    -   “No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven—the Son of Man.”

NWT (New World Translation — Jehovah’s Witnesses)   -   “Moreover, no man has ascended into heaven but he that descended from heaven, the Son of man.”

Note:   How can any honest Christian defend what the NIV translators have done? The Jehovah’s Witnesses do not believe that Jesus is God Almighty, that is why they removed those four words “which is in heaven.” Why did the NIV translators remove those same four words?

What is the importance of those four words? They prove that Jesus is not just “a god”

upon earth, but the Almighty God which is present everywhere in heaven and earth.

No one can be present on earth and in heaven at the same time, unless that one is God Almighty.

This is an attribute that only God possesses — omnipresence. The prefix omni means “all.” So God is all present (all places at once).

    1. Psalms 139:7-12 says, “Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy ________________? If I ascend up into ____________, thou art __________: if I make my bed in ________, behold, thou art __________. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the ______; Even __________ shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me. If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me. Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee.”
    2. Proverbs 15:3 says, “The eyes of the LORD are in __________    __________, beholding the evil and the good.”
    3. Jeremiah 23:24 says, “Can any ________ himself in secret places that I shall not ______ him? saith the LORD. Do not I ________ heaven and earth? saith the LORD.”

Note:   A common argument of those who use the modern translations is, “But the changes they make do not affect any doctrines.” We have seen that is not a true statement at all. Remember Acts 8:37?  This is another critical change that they have made here in this verse, because there are groups out there that teach that when Jesus came to earth, He had to give up certain of His attributes of being God Almighty. That is not true. Jesus was always fully God Almighty as He walked upon earth. He was fully God and fully man. While He was here on earth, he was also in heaven.

    4. Matthew 1:23 says, “Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, ______   ________ ____.”
    5. John 1:14 says, “And the ________ was made __________, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his __________, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.”
    6. John 14:7-9 says, “If ye had known ____, ye should have known my ____________ also: and from henceforth ye ________ him, and have ________ him. Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us. Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen ____ hath seen the ____________; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?”

#18 — Acts 3:26

KJV (King James Version)    -   “Unto you first God, having raised up his ______ Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities.”

NIV (New International Version)    -   “When God raised up his servant, he sent him first to you to bless you by turning each of you from your wicked ways.”

Note:    Remember what we saw when dealing with the New King James Version? The resurrection deals with power — not servitude.

    1.    1 Corinthians 15:42-43 says, “So also is the ________________________ of the dead. It is sown in corruption; it is raised in ________________________: It is sown in dishonour; it is raised in __________: it is sown in weakness; it is raised in __________.”

Note:   The word son has not changed to servant. That is not an Old English word that needs updating. A son has full rights and authority, but a servant does not.

The resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ does not give a

picture of servant hood, but of great authority and power.

    2. Romans 1:3-4 says, “Concerning his ______ Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh; And declared to be the ______ of God with __________, according to the spirit of holiness, by the ________________________ from the dead.”

#19 — Heb. 3:15-17

KJV (King James Version)    -   “While it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation.    For ________, when they had heard, did provoke: howbeit ______   ______ that came out of Egypt by Moses.    But with whom was he grieved forty years? was it not with them that had sinned, whose carcases fell in the wilderness?”

NIV (New International Version)    -   “As has just been said: “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion.”     Who were they who heard and rebelled? Were they not all those Moses led out of Egypt?    And with whom was he angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the desert?”

NWT (New World Translation — Jehovah’s Witnesses)   -   “While it is being said: “Today if YOU people listen to his own voice, do not harden YOUR hearts as on the occasion of causing bitter anger.”    For who were they that heard and yet provoked to bitter anger? Did not, in fact, all do so who went out of Egypt under Moses?    Moreover, with whom did [God] become disgusted for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose carcasses fell in the wilderness?”

Note:   Once again, the NIV translators followed the Jehovah’s Witnesses in their change, and have made a clear contradiction in the Bible because of it.
The KJV says some that came out of Egypt provoked the Lord, but not all (not everyone). The NIV and the NWT give a question, “Who rebelled or provoked the Lord? Was it not all (everyone) that Moses led out of Egypt?”

    1. Numbers 14:6-9 says, “And ____________ the son of Nun, and __________ the son of Jephunneh, which were of them that searched the land, rent their clothes: And they spake unto all the company of the children of Israel, saying, The land, which we passed through to search it, is an exceeding good land. If the LORD delight in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it us; a land which floweth with milk and honey. Only __________  ______ ye against the LORD, neither fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defence is departed from them, and the LORD is with us: fear them not.”
    2. Joshua 14:7-9 says, “Forty years old was I when __________ the servant of the LORD sent me from Kadeshbarnea to espy out the land; and I brought him word again as it was in mine heart. Nevertheless my brethren that went up with me made the heart of the people melt: but I ____________  ________________ the LORD my God. And Moses sware on that day, saying, Surely the land whereon thy feet have trodden shall be thine inheritance, and thy children's for ever, because thou hast ____________   ________________ the LORD my God.”

The little children who have paid attention in Sunday School could tell you

that the NIV has made a false statement here. They know that not everyone

who came out of Egypt rebelled — they know that Joshua and Caleb did not.

#20 — Heb. 2:16

KJV (King James Version)    -   “For verily he took not on him the ____________ of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham.”

NIV (New International Version)    -   “For surely it is not angels he helps, but Abraham’s descendants.”

NWT (New World Translation — Jehovah’s Witnesses)   -   “For he is really not assisting angels at all, but he is assisting Abraham’s seed.”

Note:   This is but another example of how the translators of the NIV have corrupted verses that deal with the deity and humanity of the Lord Jesus Christ. This verse clearly teaches that Jesus did not come to earth as an angelic being.

We can understand the Jehovah’s Witnesses wanting to change this passage,

because they do not accept that the Lord Jesus Christ, God Almighty, came in the

flesh to redeem man-kind. The Jehovah’s Witnesses say, “The foremost angel,

both in power and authority is the archangel, Jesus Christ, also called Michael.”

(The Watchtower, Nov. 1, 1995, p. 8 - http://www.afcministry.com/What_do_Jehovahs_Witnesses_believe.htm).

What the translators of the NIV have done here is help or assist the cults in their false teaching.

Note:   This was not an update of archaic words, but a total change in meaning; proving, once again, that the NIV translators were not just translating the Bible to update Old English words.   By making this change, the NIV translators have made another error and have made a false statement. They have stated that God does not help angels. That is not true. God does help angels, or angels would be unable to do anything. Angels are not omnipotent (the prefix omni means “all,” and the word potent means “power” —all powerful) beings. They depend upon God for their strength, just like we do.

    1. Jude 1:9 says, “Yet Michael the __________________, when ____________________ with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The ________ rebuke thee.”

Note:   We find here that Michael the archangel was disputing with the devil about the body of Moses. Michael did NOT try to REBUKE the devil in his own power, but called upon the Lord to do it, “The Lord rebuke thee.”  God does give help to His angels, or they would have no power. The NIV translators have made an absolutely false statement here.

    2. Revelation 15:7 says, “And one of the four beasts gave unto the seven ____________ seven golden vials full of the wrath of ______, who liveth for ever and ever.”

Note:   It is not the wrath of these angels that is being poured out upon earth. The angels are simply the means by which God is delivering His wrath upon earth.

    3. Hebrews 2:5 says, "For unto the ____________ hath he not put in subjection the __________ to come, whereof we speak.?"

Note:   The angels are not in charge of the world to come. They are subject to God’s will and His power.

    4. Psalms 103:20, 21 says, “Bless the LORD, ye his ____________, that excel in strength, that do his ________________________, hearkening unto the voice of his ________. Bless ye the LORD, all ye his hosts; ye ministers of his, that do his ________________.”

Note:    Angels are not all-powerful. They cannot fulfill God’s pleasure by their own power, but only by being helped or given power by God to fulfill such tasks.
The NIV translators have made a serious error here, and also aided the Jehovah’s Witness false doctrine.

#21 — Isaiah 14:12-15

KJV (King James Version)    -   “How art thou fallen from heaven, O ______________, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!    For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:    I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.    Yet thou shalt be brought down to ________, to the sides of the pit.”

NIV (New International Version)    -   “How you have fallen from heaven, O morning star, son of the dawn! You have been cast down to the earth, you who once laid low the nations!    You said in your heart, “I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God; I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly, on the utmost heights of the sacred mountain.    I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.”    But you are brought down to the grave, to the depths of the pit.”

Note:   The NIV translators took away the name Lucifer, and replaced it with the title morning star. Is there anything wrong with that? Yes, there is something dreadfully wrong with that.

The NIV translators took away the name Lucifer  and replaced
it with a title used of the Lord Jesus Christ — morning star.

    1. Revelation 22:16 says, “I __________ have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. __   ____   ______ root and the offspring of David, and the bright and ______________   ________.”

Has Lucifer now become the Savior of the world who is worthy to be worshipped?

No, but that is exactly what he is going to set himself up as in the Tribulation Period,

and will cause all to receive his mark and will demand that all worship him.

    2.    2 Thessalonians 2:3-4 says, “Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of ______ be revealed, the son of perdition; Who opposeth and ________________   ______________ above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that ____ as God sitteth in the ____________ of God, shewing himself that he is God.”
    3. Revelation 13:11-12 says, “And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a ____________. And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to ______________ the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.”

Note:   Satan is a god — a false god, and he has deceived many. The NIV translators certainly have helped his cause by removing the name Lucifer, and replacing it with morning star.

    4.    2 Corinthians 4:3-4 says, “But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are ________: In whom the ______ of this world hath ______________ the __________ of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.”

To further the weakening and corrupting of this passage,

the NIV translators changed the word hell  to the word grave.

KJV (King James Version)    -   “Yet thou shalt be brought down to ________, to the sides of the pit.”

NIV (New International Version)    -   “But you are brought down to the grave, to the depths of the pit.”

Is that the end of Lucifer — the grave? No, the end

of Lucifer is the torment of hell — the Lake of Fire.

    5. Matthew 25:41 says, “Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into ______________________   ________, prepared for the __________ and his angels.”
    6. Revelation 20:10 says, “And the __________ that deceived them was cast into the ________ of ________ and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be __________________ day and night for ________ and ________.”

Note:  How can any Christian maintain that the NIV translators have not affected any doctrine by their changes to the text? They take away one of Satan’s names (Lucifer), and replace it with a title used of the Lord Jesus Christ (morning star); then they change the end of Satan to being cast into the grave, instead of being cast into hell.

How can Christians defend such men as the NIV translators, and at the same time

erupt violently against people who point out these errors and stand faithfully

upon the KJV text? Something is wrong in the heart of such a person.

    7. Isaiah 5:20 says, “______ unto them that call evil ________, and good ________; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!”

#22 — Luke 4:4

KJV (King James Version)    -   “And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every ________ of ______.”

NIV (New International Version)    -  “Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man does not live on bread alone.’”

NWT (New World Translation — Jehovah’s Witnesses)   -   “But Jesus replied to him: “It is written, ‘Man must not live by bread alone.’”

Note:   The NIV translators followed the lead of the Jehovah’s Witnesses, and removed the last six words of the verse “but by every word of God.”
Man knows that he does not live by bread alone, but the NIV and the NWT do not tell him what he does need to live eternally — the Word of God.

    1. 1 Peter 1:23 says, “Being ________  __________, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the ________ of ______, which liveth and abideth for ever.”
    2. Romans 10:17 says, “So then __________ cometh by hearing, and hearing by the ________ of ______.”

Man tries to fill his appetite by money, but that does not satisfy.

    3. Ecclesiastes 5:10 says, “He that ____________  ____________ shall ______ be __________________ with silver; nor he that loveth abundance with increase: this is also vanity.”

Man tries to fill his appetite by immorality, but that does not satisfy.

    4. Proverbs 27:20 says, “Hell and destruction are never full; so the ________ of man are __________   __________________.”
    5. Hebrews 11:24-25 says, “By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter; Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the ____________________ of ______ for a ____________.”

Man tries to fill his appetite by alcohol, but that does not satisfy.

    6. Proverbs 23:29-35 says, “Who hath ______? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes? They that tarry long at the ________; they that go to seek mixed wine. Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright. At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder. Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter perverse things. Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast. They have stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I __________? I will ________ it yet __________.”

Man knows that he has an appetite, but he does not know

what will really satisfy it. He will only find the answer in the Word of God,

and the NIV translators left off those last six words telling him that.

KJV (King James Version)    -   “And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.”

NIV (New International Version)
“Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man does not live on bread alone.’”
