Didn't Moses allow divorce and remarriage?

   Thanks for taking the time to read my question. I've noticed in several places you have answered the common questions of "can I marry this divorced woman" with one scripture, every time. Isn't it true Moses allowed re-marriage & divorce? I believe some of the reasons this was allowable was because the husband did not provide for the wife, the divorce was allowable if there was adultery, and a few other things. Just curious! Thanks.

  I assume that you are referring to Romans 7:2,3, "For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband. So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man." These verses are very clear what God’s will is, that the husband and wife remain married to each other as long as they are alive upon earth. And if they marry someone else, then God considers it adultery.

    That is exactly what Jesus said, when He was asked about the matter. Mark 10:2-9 says, "And the Pharisees came to him, and asked him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife? tempting him. And he answered and said unto them, What did Moses command you? And they said, MOSES SUFFERED TO WRITE A BILL OF DIVORCEMENT, AND TO PUT HER AWAY. And JESUS ANSWERED and said unto them, FOR THE HARDNESS OF YOUR HEART HE WROTE YOU THIS PRECEPT. BUT FROM THE BEGINNING OF THE CREATION GOD MADE THEM MALE AND FEMALE. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife; And they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh. WHAT THEREFORE GOD HATH JOINED TOGETHER, LET NOT MAN PUT ASUNDER."

    Jesus said that Moses only allowed divorce because the people’s hearts were so hard, but that it was never God’s will to divorce, let alone remarry while a former mate was still alive. If a Christian wants to justify divorce, and/or remarriage, then the same holds true today — he/she has a hard heart, and is out of God’s will.
