Does the
Book of Hebrews teach "eternal security?"
I am doing a paper on
the believer's eternal security. The main topic of my paper has to do with Heb. 6:11-20
dealing with God's promise to us the heirs of God's promise to Abraham. If you have time I
would appreciate anything that I could use as a quote, or if not, any ideas would be
great.
The
best thing to quote is what God Himself says in His Word. The scriptures you mention
are Heb. 6:11-20:
"And we desire THAT EVERY ONE OF YOU DO SHOW THE SAME DILIGENCE TO
THE FULL ASSURANCE OF HOPE UNTO THE END: THAT YE BE not slothful, but FOLLOWERS OF THEM
WHO THROUGH FAITH AND PATIENCE INHERIT THE PROMISES. For when God made promise to Abraham,
because he could swear by no greater, he sware by himself, Saying, Surely blessing I will
bless thee, and multiplying I will multiply thee. And so, after he had patiently endured,
he obtained the promise. For men verily swear by the greater: and an oath for confirmation
is to them an end of all strife. Wherein God, willing more abundantly to show unto the
heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath: That by two
immutable things, in which IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE FOR GOD TO LIE, WE MIGHT HAVE A STRONG
CONSOLATION, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us: WHICH HOPE
WE HAVE AS AN ANCHOR OF THE SOUL, BOTH SURE AND STEDFAST, and which entereth into that
within the veil; Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest
for ever after the order of Melchisedec."
We, who trust in Jesus alone, have the same promises of eternal
security as Abraham. Notice carefully that which has been emphasized in bold print. Of
course, God also has His work for us to do. Compare Eph. 2:8-10: "For by grace are ye
saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest
any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, CREATED IN CHRIST JESUS UNTO GOOD WORKS,
which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them." We are not saved by
serving, but saved to serve! Are you saved and serving the Lord faithfully?
