Chapter 1

IV. The Choices For Marriage.

Note: In the Bible Course Booklet, Marriage, Part 2, we have previously looked at:

    A. Finding the right person to marry.

     5. The decision SHOULD be based upon GOD’S WORD.

        c. What should you look for in a young lady?

      d. What should you look for in a young man?

1.) Does he honor his parents?

a.) Ephesians 6:1-3 says, "Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. ____________ thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise; That it may be ________ with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth."

If a young man is rebellious to his parents,

then his life is not going to go well.

That means if a young lady is married to him,

then her life is going to suffer as well.

— What should you look for in a young man?

1.) Does he honor his parents?

2.) Does he appear to be a loving, spiritual leader?

a.) Ephesians 5:22-25 says, "Wives, ____________ yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. For the husband is the ________ of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing. Husbands, ________ your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it."

Note: Would you want to marry a mean, unspiritual man? That is going to make it very difficult to submit to him.

Watch a young man. Watch how he treats his own

mother and sister(s). Be willing to admit

what you see. If he is grumpy and mean

to his own family, then he is going to be

the same way in his own marriage someday,

other than by the grace of God.

His home-life tells the real story — so watch!

Note: This is one of the downfalls of young people meeting at college. You cannot observe how they really are around their own families. People can put on a front around new people for months.

b.) Psalm 119:9 says, "Wherewithal shall a __________ man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy ________."

Note: Does the young man carry his Bible to church? Does he open it? Does he take notes of the preacher’s message? Does he pay attention to the message? Does he lean over on his knees while the preacher is preaching and sleep, or goof off?

How does he act in Sunday School? Flirty? Bored? Interested? Respectful to the teacher? Does he act mature and try to answer the questions that the teacher may ask? Once again — watch!

— What should you look for in a young man?

1.) Does he honor his parents?

2.) Does he appear to be a loving, spiritual leader?

3.) Does he appear to want God to lead him to an occupation, or does money and/or prestige seem to be leading him?

a.) Proverbs 28:20 says, "A faithful man shall abound with blessings: but he that maketh haste to be ________ shall not be __________________."

b.) Verse 22 of that same chapter says, "He that hasteth to be ________ hath an evil eye, and considereth not that ______________ shall come upon him."

If you marry a man that is set on getting rich quick,

you may have a husband who is doomed to

bankruptcy — or maybe even to prison.

That is not a pleasant thought for a marriage.

c.) Isaiah 6:8 says, "Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send _____."

d.) Romans 12:1,2 says, "I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye ______________ your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, ________ of God."

Note: You want to find a young man that is willing to do whatever God wants for his life. That will be the most rewarding and fulfilling, and it will also bring the promise that God will meet your needs.

e.) Romans 8:28 says, "And we know that all things work together for ________ to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his ______________."

f.) Psalm 37:25 says, "I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous ________________, nor his seed ______________ bread."

g.) Philippians 4:19 says, "But my God shall supply all your ________ according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus."

— What should you look for in a young man?

1.) Does he honor his parents?

2.) Does he appear to be a loving, spiritual leader?

3.) Does he appear to want God to lead him to an occupation, or is money and prestige leading him?

4.) Does he appear to be ambitious?

a.) Colossians 3:23 says, "And whatsoever ye do, do it ________________, as to the Lord, and not unto men."

Note: The word heartily means "in a sincere, enthusiastic, vigorous, wholehearted manner." (Merriam Webster’s Seventh New Collegiate Dictionary)

b.) II Thessalonians 3:10 says, "For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not ________, neither should he eat."

c.) The next verses states, "For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, ______________ not at all, but are busybodies."

Note: Throughout the Bible, God uses ambitious men — not lazy ones. God have mercy upon the young lady who finds herself married to a lazy man. Her life is going to be hard. A bumper sticker was seen on a truck which read, "Some people like to fish — Other people get jobs — I fish!" Make sure you get a man who gets a job!

— What should you look for in a young man?

1.) Does he honor his parents?

2.) Does he appear to be a loving, spiritual leader?

3.) Does he appear to want God to lead him to an occupation, or is money and prestige leading him?

4.) Does he appear to be ambitious?

5.) Does he appear modest and proper in his appearance?

Note: Please refer to Bible Course BC-E-106, The Christian’s Appearance, for a thorough study of how men, women, boys, and girls should dress. You will read there of the instances of improperly dressed men, and the consequences that it brings upon families. God expects both men and women to be dressed modestly.

Note: Once again, these are just some things to get you thinking about what the Bible teaches a young man to be.

6.) The decision SHOULD be based upon GOD’S LEADING.

a.) Psalm 27:11 says, "Teach me thy way, O LORD, and lead me in a __________ path, because of mine enemies."

b.) Psalm 5:8 says, "________ me, O LORD, in thy righteousness because of mine enemies; make thy way straight before my face."

God will never lead you contrary

to what the Bible teaches.

Note: Many people fail to catch the importance of consulting the Bible for direction. MOST PEOPLE LET CIRCUMSTANCES LEAD THEM INTO MARRIAGE. They happen to meet someone that is attractive, and begin dating, even though the Bible would forbid such a relationship.

Question: What led the wise men to Jesus? Was it really just a star? Are you sure? Please read Matthew 2:1-12 to find the answer.

c.) Verses 1,2 say, "Now when Jesus was born in __________________ of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to __________________, Saying, __________ is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his ________ in the east, and are come to worship him."

Note: Please notice that it clearly says that Jesus was born in Bethlehem. But the wise men went to Jerusalem. And what did they ask when they got there? "Where is he that is born King of the Jews?"

The wise men had no idea where Jesus was. The star (circumstances) got their attention, but it was not enough to help them find Him.

d.) Verses 3-6 say, "When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. And when he had gathered all the chief ______________ and ____________ of the people together, he demanded of them __________ Christ should be born. And they said unto him, In __________________ of Judaea: for thus it is written by the ______________, And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel."

Note: What was at Jerusalem that the wise men needed to find Jesus? The Bible. God got their attention by the star in the east (circumstances), but He would not allow them to be led directly there, until the Bible was consulted.

Once the Bible was consulted to give direction, then God allowed circumstances (the star) to pinpoint the exact spot in Bethlehem.

e.) Verses 8 and 9 say, "And he sent them to __________________, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also. When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the ________, which they saw in the east, ________ ____________ them, till it came and __________ over where the young child was."

The star did not move, until the wise men had been

instructed from God’s Word. When they obeyed the

Word of God, then the star began to move, and to

show them exactly where the Messiah was born.

Note: God is never going to lead you to the right husband or wife through circumstances alone. If you want His clear direction, then you are going to have to consult His Word.

What if a young person is too far out in the sticks?

How will he/she ever find the right one to marry?

Note: Do you remember how David got to be the King of Israel? Read I Samuel 16:1-13, and answer the following questions.

f.) Verse 1 says, "And the LORD said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for ________, seeing I have ________________ him from reigning over Israel? fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to __________ the Bethlehemite: for I have provided me a king among his ________."

g.) Verses 6,7 say, "And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on __________, and said, Surely the Lord's anointed is before him. But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the _____________ of his stature; because I have ______________ him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the __________."

h.) Verses 8-10 say, "Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, ______________ hath the LORD chosen this. Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by. And he said, ______________ hath the LORD chosen this. Again, Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse, The LORD hath _______ chosen these."

i.) Verse 11 says, "And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here ______ thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet the ________________, and, behold, he keepeth the __________. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he ________ hither."

j.) Verse 12 says, "And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the LORD said, Arise, ____________ him: for this is ____."

Note: David was anointed to be the next king, but did you notice what happened? All of his brothers got to go to town to see Samuel — except David. He was the youngest, and had to stay home and watch the sheep.

What if David would have thought, "Hey, this is not fair! All of my brothers get to go to town, and I’m stuck at home with the sheep! I think I’ll get a neighbor boy to watch the sheep for me, and I’ll just sneak into town. I’ll keep in the background, but at least I’ll be able to see what is going on there."

What if David would have done that? He would have been in big trouble when he was not back with the sheep like he was supposed to be. And, in fact, if he would have done that, God would not have chosen him to be the next king. Why? Remember what verse 7 said, "The LORD looketh on the heart." The Lord chose David because his heart was right.

k.) II Chronicles 16:9 says, "For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show himself strong in the behalf of them whose __________ is perfect toward him."

l.) Do you want to make sure that you are not left behind in the best things for your life? Then obey Ephesians 6:1-3, ""Children, ________ your parents in the Lord: for this is right. Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise; That it may be ________ with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth."

Many times young people think that they need to be somewhere special,

where there is a lot of people

and a lot of action, or else they think that they will

get left behind  in finding the right mate.

Note: To find the best mate, do young people really have to be at a popular college where there are nice buildings and dozens, or even hundreds, of young ladies and young men from which to choose? Colleges advertise heavily to attract Christian young people there to find mates. Their literature often shows a young man and a young woman walking together, or sitting somewhere together. Will you really be able to find God’s best if you are not there?

On the other hand, do young people really have to be at a church with the biggest and the most active youth group to find the right mate? Is that where the best ones will be?

Is David just an exception? A young man who stayed home and obeyed his father? A young man who found the best for his life, even though he was not where all the action was? No, David is not an exception.

Where was Elisha when a helper and eventual replacement was needed for Elijah? Read I Kings 19 and fill in the blanks below.

m.) Verse 16 says, "...and ____________ the son of Shaphat of Abelmeholah shalt thou anoint to be ______________ in thy room."

n.) Notice where Elijah found Elisha in verses 19 and 20, "So he departed thence, and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was ______________ with twelve yoke of oxen before him, and he with the twelfth: and Elijah passed by him, and cast his mantle upon him. And he left the oxen, and ran after Elijah, and said, Let me, I pray thee, kiss my ____________ and my ____________, and then I will follow thee."

Note: When a helper and replacement was sought for Elijah, where did God find one? He looked for another young man who was at home being obedient to his parents. Elisha was not where all the action was. Elisha was out plowing in the field for his dad. And when the time came to leave home, he did not act disrespectful to his parents, and yell out, "Finally — I’m out’a here!" That is not at all what he did. He went and kissed his parents. He had been obedient to them, and he loved them. Because of that, God blessed him.

What may seem really unusual to many, is that when God chose a replacement for Elijah, He did not pick one from a college at all.

o.) II Kings 2:3 says, "And the sons of the prophets that were at ____________ came forth to Elisha, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the LORD will take away thy master from thy head to day? And he said, Yea, I know it; hold ye your peace."

p.) II Kings 2:5 says, "And the sons of the prophets that were at ______________ came to Elisha, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the LORD will take away thy master from thy head to day? And he answered, Yea, I know it; hold ye your peace."

q.) II Kings 2:7 says, "And __________ men of the sons of the prophets went, and stood to view afar off: and they two stood by Jordan."

Note: When God chose a replacement for Elijah, He did not choose one from the sons of the prophets. You would have thought that one of them would have been the natural choice. But remember, God looks at the heart — not at the degree.

If a young person has a pure heart,

and is obedient to his/her parents,

that one need never fear about missing out

on God’s best in life — including the best mate.

r.) This does not mean that God blesses ignorance. God commands us in II Timothy 2:15, "__________ to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."

s.) But it is possible, even in a college setting where young people are busy serving the Lord, to not be spending time with the Lord. Martha found herself in that position in Luke 10:38-42.

                 1. Verse 38 says, "Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named ____________ received him into her house."

                 2. Verse 39 says, "And she had a sister called ________, which also sat at __________ feet, and heard his ________."

                 3. Verse 40 says, "But Martha was ________________ about much ______________, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me."

                 4. Verses 41,42 says, "And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is ______________: and ________ hath chosen that ________ part, which shall not be taken away from her."

Note: Wherever you are, you need to learn to spend time alone with God. God is looking for pure hearts to bless.
