Question:
My question is about the Holy Trinity. I believe in the Holy Trinity, but when asked “Why?”, I am uneducated enough to reply. Could you give me Biblical reference points to back up my belief?
Answer:
One thing that confuses some people is that the word “Trinity” never occurs in the Bible. It is a term that we have coined to explain a Biblical truth, that God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit are three distinct Persons, yet One, Holy God.
Biblical references to the truth of the Trinity start out in the very first chapter of the Bible. Genesis 1:26 says, “And GOD said, Let US make man in OUR image, after OUR likeness…” Notice the use of “plural pronouns” there.
We find the same thing in Genesis chapter 2. Notice verse 22. “And the LORD GOD said, Behold, the man is become as one of US, to know good and evil…”
God is speaking in Genesis 11:7, and says, “Go to, let US go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.” So the Bible starts right out teaching the Trinity. The saved people of the Old Testament clearly understood this truth. Jesus said to the Jews, “Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad” (Holy Bible, John 8:56).
The New Testament is filled with references to the truth of the Trinity, as well. I John 5:7 says, “For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and THESE THREE ARE ONE.” What is interesting is that a multitude of study or reference Bibles have a note about that verse, saying that it should not be in the Bible. If you were the devil, what verse would you want to take out of the Bible? The clearest one about the truth of the Trinity, because if people will not accept Jesus as God in the flesh, then they cannot be saved. Jesus said, “I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins” (Holy Bible, John 8:24). In John 10:30, Jesus said, “I and my Father are ONE.” Matthew 28:19 says that we are to be baptized “in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.” If anyone but God was put in that saying, then they would be placed on the same level as God. And no one is to be worshipped or glorified, except God. Compare Acts 5:3,4. If a person has lied to the Holy Ghost (vs. 3), then he has lied to God (vs. 4), because the Holy Spirit is God. Notice Hebrews 9:14, where the Holy Spirit is said to be “eternal.” Only God has “always existed,” so the Holy Spirit is God. The Bible says, “Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God” (Holy Bible, Psalm 90:2).
These are just a few of many, many references to the truth of the Trinity.
