Does God ordain the marriage where one is saved and the other is unsaved?
God says in His Word that it is sin for a saved person to marry an unsaved person. I Corinthians 7:39 says, “The wife is bound by the law as long as her husband liveth; but if her husband be dead, she is at liberty to be married to whom she will; ONLY IN THE LORD.” II Corinthians 6:14-18 says, “BE YE NOT UNEQUALLY YOKED TOGETHER WITH UNBELIEVERS: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.”
If a Christian goes ahead and marries an unsaved person, then he/she is not free to divorce that one. I Corinthians 7:10-15 says, “And unto the married I command, yet not I, but the Lord, LET NOT THE WIFE DEPART FROM HER HUSBAND: But and if she depart, let her remain unmarried, or be reconciled to her husband: and LET NOT THE HUSBAND PUT AWAY HIS WIFE. But to the rest speak I, not the Lord: IF ANY BROTHER HATH A WIFE THAT BELIEVETH NOT, and she be pleased to dwell with him, LET HIM NOT PUT HER AWAY. AND THE WOMAN WHICH HATH AN HUSBAND THAT BELIEVETH NOT, and if he be pleased to dwell with her, LET HER NOT LEAVE HIM. For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband: else were your children unclean; but now are they holy. But if the unbelieving depart, let him depart. A brother or a sister is not under bondage in such cases: but God hath called us to peace.” By leaving a mate (even though that one is unsaved), such a Christian is committing a sin. Marrying an unsaved person is one sin, and then to divorce is adding another sin on top of that. A Christian who marries an unbeliever is now required to make the best of the situation.
