Where does it say that the husband is the “priest” of the home?

Question:

I have heard people say many times that a husband is the priest of the home. Where does it say this in the Bible?

Answer:

The husband is to lead in the home. Ephesians 5:22,23 says, “Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.”

The husband is to do the spiritual teaching. I Timothy 2:11-14 says, “Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. For Adam was first formed, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.”

The common term “priesthood of the believer” is simply referring to all Christians (male or female), in regard to all of us being able to come directly to God (not through some human priest or mediator). We can go directly to Jesus. I Timothy 2:5 says, “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.” Hebrews 4:14-16 says, Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.”

I Peter 2:5 says, “Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, AN HOLY PRIESTHOOD, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.” I Peter 2:9 says, “But ye are a chosen generation, A ROYAL PRIESTHOOD, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should show forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light.” Revelation 1:4-6 says, “John to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace be unto you, and peace, from him which is, and which was, and which is to come; and from the seven Spirits which are before his throne; And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood, And HATH MADE US KINGS AND PRIESTS unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.” Revelation 20:6 says, “Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but THEY SHALL BE PRIESTS OF GOD and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.”
