Bible Study Course

The Christian’s Appearance

Welcome to the “Practical Christian Living Series” of the Liberty Bible Course. This series deals with how to have a good Christian appearance and testimony in this present world. Some appearances are clearly wrong. This booklet will address many so called “gray areas” in the matter of appearance. If studied with a sincere and an open heart, this booklet will help you draw some Scriptural lines. As it has been rightly stated, “If you do not stand for something, you will fall for anything!” How true that is in the present day appearance of professing Christians. “Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world.” (Titus 2:12).  This study is written to be used with the KING JAMES BIBLE, otherwise your answers are not going to be correct. Please get your Bible, and begin another exciting study in God’s Word, that just might change your life!

Chapter 1

I. Hair

A. The man’s hair.

    1. I Corinthians 11:14 says that if a man has long hair, it is a __________ unto him.

    2. That same verse says that “____________ itself” teaches a man that truth.

Note: When a man has long hair, it is a shame unto him, and thus he will feel self-conscious about it. The longer a man’s hair is, the more self-conscious he becomes. Watch a man with very long hair walk down the street. Many times he will keep looking back and forth, and all around him. Do you know why he keeps doing that? Because he feels self-conscious about his appearance, and he is wondering if anyone is looking at him. He probably does not even realize that he is doing it, but nature itself is telling him that he looks out of place.

Illustration: If short hair is natural for a man, then short hair makes him feel more masculine. If long hair is natural for a woman, then long hair makes her feel more feminine.

If a man has long hair, then he is taking upon himself a feminine appearance. This, in turn, may make him have some feminine characteristics. He walks differently because of his long hair. He bends over differently because of his long hair getting in the way. He starts to act and move and hold himself more like a woman than like a man.

Now stop and think of what has been said. The sin of Sodomy has increased greatly in the last 20-30 years. After considering the above facts, can you now see why? Men have started to wear their hair in an unnatural way, and have thus taken on some feminine characteristics.

Once they looked  unnatural, the next step was

to act   unnatural, and to commit  unnatural acts.

    3. Romans 1:27 says, “And likewise also the men, leaving the ______________ use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another.”

Question: If long hair on a man is unnatural, then why did God want Samson’s hair to remain uncut? Please read Judges 13:1-5,24, and answer the following questions.

4.. The children of Israel did ____________ in the sight of God, so He delivered them into the hand of the Philistines forty years. (vs.1)

    5. Manoah’s wife was ____________ — she had no children. (vs.2)

    6. An __________ of the LORD appeared to the woman, and said she was going to conceive and have a son. (vs.3)

    7. Several restrictions were placed upon the woman:

        a. She was not to drink ________ nor ____________ drink. (vs.4a)

        b. She was not to eat any _____________ thing. (vs.4b)

        c. No __________ was to come on the child’s head. (vs.5a)

        d. The child was to be a _________________ unto God. (vs.5b)

Note: To discover what a Nazarite Vow consisted of, please turn to Numbers 6:1-6.

    7. A ______ or a __________ could separate themselves to take a vow of a Nazarite. (vs.2)

    8. They could drink no ________ or strong drink. (vs.3a)

    9. In fact, they could eat ______________ made of the vine (no product of grapes at all). (vss.3b,4)

    10. No __________ could come upon his/her head until the days of the vow were fulfilled. (vs.5)

    11. All the days of the vow, he/she could not touch a ________ body. (vs.6)

   12. At the end of the days of the Nazarite Vow, he/she was to __________ his/her head at the door of the tabernacle. (vs.18)

Note: The Nazarite Vow was normally only for a number of daysnot years. Thus, a man’s hair would not have normally gotten so long. Remember that after the vow was complete, he was to shave his head.

Another thing we do not know is exactly how long Samson’s hair got, nor how fast God caused it to grow.

But Samson’s hair was certainly longer than men normally wore their hair, so why would God want a man to take an extended Nazarite Vow, thus allowing his hair to get longer than nature so teaches? We do not have an exact answer for this, other than God wanted this man to stand out in a special way. Only God knows why He chose to do it this way.

It is interesting to notice the long-haired men

of the Bible, and how they were spiritually.

    13. Samson.

        a. Judges 14:1-4 reveals to us that Samson did not honor his parents. They were not happy that he wanted “a ________________ of the uncircumcised Philistines.” It was against God’s commands. (vs.3)

Note: Verse 4 is not saying that God approved of such a marriage (II Corinthians 6:14), but that He would use even Samson’s rebellion to accomplish His purpose.

        b. “Surely the __________ of man shall praise thee: the remainder of wrath shalt thou restrain.” (Psalm 76:10)

Note: This means that God can turn around any situation for His glory. In this instance, God would use even Samson’s disobedience to judge the Philistines. Read Judges chapters 14 and 15 to discover how.

        c. Judges 16:1 says Samson went into an ____________.

        d. According to Judges 16:4, after the harlot, Samson loved another Philistine woman by the name of ______________.

        e. Verses 16,17 reveal that this was his ultimate downfall, as his soul was “vexed unto __________.”

      f. Then he “told her all his __________.” (vs.17)

Note: Samson’s life was characterized by rebellion, lust, and an early death. (Judges 16:30) What a shame that God was glorified more in Samson’s death, than in his life!

        g. What God really desires is “that ye present your bodies a ____________ sacrifice…” (Romans 12:1).

God wants us to live  for Him — not just to die  for Him.

    14. Absalom.

        — According to II Samuel 3:1-5, name the first six sons of David.

        a. ___________________. (vs.2)

        b. ___________________. (vs.3a)

        c. ___________________. (vs.3b)

        d. ___________________. (vs.4a)

        e. ___________________. (vs.4b)

        f. ___________________. (vs.5)

        g. The third son’s name was ______________.

        h. II Samuel 14:25 says of him: “But in all Israel there was none to be so much praised as Absalom for his ____________.”

        i. That same verse says “there was no ______________ in him.”

        j. Verse 26 then says he polled (cut) his hair “at every __________ end.”

        k. It says his hair “was __________ on him.”

Note: Absalom was a very handsome young man, with not a blemish on him. It further states that he only cut his hair once a year, and that it was very heavy upon him by the year’s end, in other words — very long.

        l. II Samuel 15:1 says that Absalom gathered chariots and horses, and __________ men to run before him.

        m. Then he flattered people in (vss.3-6) until he “__________ the hearts of the men of Israel.” (vs.6)

        n. Verse 10 reveals Absalom trying to take over his father’s throne as he spreads word: “Absalom ______________ in Hebron.”

Men with long hair seem to display rebellion in their lives.

Note: Look at the last 30 years in our country. Do you not see the same tendency in those that have long hair? Long-haired men have led revolutions in music, revolts in colleges, protests against wars, liberalism in politics, etc.

Question: What length hair is considered long on a man, and what is considered short?

Answer: Is hair over a man’s ears considered to be long hair? No one calls it short hair.

Is hair hanging down over a man’s collar considered to be long hair? No one calls it short hair.

Is hair down to a man’s shoulders considered to be long hair? No one calls it short hair.

Is hair down to the middle of a man’s back considered to be long hair? No one calls it short hair.

One thing quickly becomes clear — short hair  is easy

to define, but long hair  has many different lengths.

A man ought to wear his hair short (I Corinthians 11:14) — off the ears and collar. That way he is clearly obeying God. If a man wants to argue this point, it is because he desires to be like the world.

    15. I John 2:15 says, “Love not the __________, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.”

    16. But what about the love of God? That is exactly the point. “For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not ________________.” (I John 5:3)

Note: If any man is grieved at having to have his hair short, then he loves the world’s styles more than he loves God.

Okay, so if a man is to wear his hair so it is unquestionably short, why not just have all men shave their heads?

    17. Ezekiel 44:20 says of the priests, “Neither shall they __________ their heads, nor suffer their locks to grow __________; they shall only poll their heads.”

Note: God’s will is not for men to shave their heads, nor to grow their hair long. God’s will is for a man to have a decent short haircut.

B. The woman’s hair.

    1. I Corinthians 11:15 says that if a woman has long hair, it is a __________ to her.

    2. That same verse says her hair is given to her for a ________________.

    3. Verse 10 of this same chapter refers to a covered woman as having “__________ on her head” (through prayer), because of the angels.

Note: God rewards the submissive woman with long hair by giving her glory, and by giving her power in prayer.

Question: What length is considered long hair on a woman, and what is considered short?

As we have earlier seen in our discussion of men’s hair, there are many different lengths of long hair. But everyone knows what is short hair.

A woman should never get her hair cut

anywhere near the length of a man’s short  hair.

That is: short on the sides, short in the back, and cut to lay flat on the head like a man’s haircut. Such a haircut causes confusion between a man and a woman. The result of that confusion will be dealt with later in the section on clothes.

Conclusion: If you are a man, and questioning whether your hair is too long — it probably is. If you are a woman, and you are now wondering whether your hair is too short — it probably is. Why not have your hair unquestionably right for God’s glory?

REVIEW:

    1. If a man has long hair, it is a __________ to him.

    2. No one should even have to teach a man that, because ____________ itself teaches him that truth.

    3. If short hair is natural for a man, then it makes him feel more __________________, and long hair makes him feel more ________________.

    4. Give the names of two long-haired, rebellious men:

        a.

        b.

   5. If a man is grieved at having to have his hair short, then he loves the ____________ styles more than he loves God.

    6. God did not want the priests to __________ their heads, neither did He want them to let their locks grow ________ — He just wanted them to have decent haircuts.

    7. If a woman has long hair, it is a __________ to her.

    8. A woman’s hair is given to her for a ________________.

    9. A woman should never get her hair cut anywhere near the length of a __________ short hair.

   10. Why not have your hair unquestionably __________ for God’s glory?

Chapter 2

II. Clothing.

A. The woman’s clothes.

    1. According to I Timothy 2:9, women are to “adorn themselves in ____________ apparel.”

    2. Matthew 5:28 says, “That whosoever looketh on a woman to ________ after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.”

    3. In Proverbs 7:10, a woman “with the ____________ of an harlot” met a young man.

Note: The question sometimes arises, “What is modest apparel?” There are five areas we need to discuss here: the hemline, the neckline, the fabric, the fit, and the form.

According to Matthew 5:28 listed above, if a man looks at a woman and is attracted to immoral thoughts, then he has committed adultery with her already in his heart — his physical emotions have already been stirred.

While a man is held fully accountable for his thoughts

and emotions, a woman immodestly dressed will also be

held accountable to God for the way that she dresses.

In Proverbs 7:10 listed above, that woman was dressed with the attire of an harlot. An harlot is a woman who sells herself for the purpose of immorality. Men can also be called harlots, as is seen in Joel 3:3. An harlot is usually recognized by the suggestive way that she is dressed; but on the other hand, she may be fully dressed, but a certain look gives away her true intentions.

    4. In Genesis 38:13-15, Judah thought Tamar was an harlot “because she had ______________ her face.” The veil was covering her face — her identity was unknown. But her eyes could be seen, and a person can also show many feelings through the eyes alone — even while fully and modestly covered.

    5. Proverbs 6:24,25 warns not to let an evil woman “take thee with her ______________.”

— We will now discuss the five areas mentioned at the beginning of this note:

        a. The hemline.

What is the proper length for a hemline to be, so as to be sure to be modest? Well, what is a long dress?

Everyone would agree that a long dress is down

around the ankles or feet. From that point up,

you have many different lengths of shorter  dresses.

The problem lies in determining at what point a shorter dress becomes too short, or unquestionably immodest. A shorter dress is unquestionably immodest when you sit down, and it is not long enough to drape down over your knees. The reason for this is rather obvious when you sit across the room from a woman dressed like that. Only a man who likes to lust, or a woman who wants men’s eyes upon her would argue this point. The longer the dress, the better; but the above length is the absolute shortest for which modesty can be maintained.

        b. The neckline.

The front neckline is usually the biggest culprit. How low is too low? Everyone will agree that up around the neck is unquestionably modest. Anything from there on is a lower neckline.

What is an unquestionably modest neckline?

Just what the word says, “to have the line of your clothing

up to the point where only the neck is revealed.”

What is the purpose of baring the shoulders, the back, and the front? The purpose is very clear — to see more flesh! And what is the motive behind showing more flesh? Just one — lust.

At what point can we definitely say that a neckline is immodest? Ladies can do a very simple test in the bathroom to find out — simply bend forward in front of a mirror. If you can see a part of your anatomy that a man (or your children and other children) should not see, then you are dressed immodestly.

Women try and defend their low tops and say, “Well I never bend over that far in front of people!” But the truth is that they do many times. They do when they bend over to pick up their purses; when they fix their shoes; when they bend over to hug or pick up children, etc. The mirror will tell the truth as to what a multitude of other men, women, and children are seeing all of the time.

        c. The fabric.

Loosely knit sweaters with no blouse underneath are immodest. White, and light-colored blouses are often immodest, because of the thin fabric. If a woman would be ashamed to walk around in her undergarments, then she should be ashamed to wear light-colored, thin blouses, because everyone is seeing her undergarments.

Fabric which can be seen through in any way,

is obviously immodest.

        d. The fit.

Some people may be fully covered, but covered with body-hugging clothes. In such a case, the woman is either trying to wear a size that is too small for her, or she is choosing clothes made out of immodest types of fabric.

If a woman’s clothes cling to her every curve,

then her clothes are immodest.

        e. The form.

1.) Deuteronomy 22:5 says, “The ____________ shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a ______, neither shall a ______ put on a ____________ garment: for all that do so are _____________________ unto the LORD thy God.”

Some try to excuse away this passage as not applying to us today, because it is in the Old Testament. If they were really consistent in that line of thinking, then they could never quote an Old Testament promise or principle, because it was all for another day.

2.) The Bible refutes that idea, because it says in Romans 15:4 that “whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our ________________.”

It seems that it would therefore be wise to learn why God said that a woman wearing a man’s clothes, or a man wearing a woman’s clothes is an abomination to Him. Why is it an abomination to God for men to wear women’s clothes, and for women to wear men’s clothes? Because it causes confusion, lust, and perversion. Many artists draw men’s and women’s clothes exactly alike in Bible times, but that is not true. There had to be a definite distinction between men’s and women’s clothes.

Today, about the only distinction there is in many men’s

and women’s clothes is the label which says, “MEN’S” or “WOMEN’S.”

That is obviously not the point of distinction that God

intended — just for the labels  to be different.

That is nothing short of what the hypocrites in Jesus’ day were doing with the law — keeping the letter of it — but not the true spirit or reason for the writing of it.

The spirit   of this command about clothing is not about the

label   on clothes — but about the look of the clothes. It is the

LOOK   of the clothes that causes lust — not the LABEL.

            1. Confusion.

When clothes on men and women look the same, it first causes confusion. You are not sure whether you are looking at a man or a woman. Everyone has seen two people walking down the sidewalk and thought, “Which is which? Which is the man, and which is the woman?”

            2. Lust.

That confusion leads to lust.

If you cannot tell at a glance whether you are looking

at a man or a woman, then your eyes will be drawn to the differences

in the way God made men and women. That is why the devil is behind

all look-alike clothing and hair styles. He knows that look-alike styles will

get people to automatically look-over people’s bodies, thus causing lust.

           3. Perversion.

When a person is confused as to who he is looking at, his eyes automatically go to areas that arouse lust — which easily leads to perversion.

Illustration: There was a psychologist who once did an experiment with a dog. He would ring a bell, and then feed the dog. He repeated this over and over — ring the bell, then feed the dog. Then one day he rang the bell, but did not feed the dog. Guess what happened? The dog’s mouth started watering — even though no food was there. Because of learned behavior (a habit), the dog’s glands were aroused before there was any food present. Many people could learn a lot from that experiment with the dog.

The present practice of wearing look-alike  clothing has

gotten many people into the habit of having roving eyes.

They are lusting out of habit — before they even

know at whom they are looking.

Imagine a man’s emotions being stirred out of habit to lust, and then to discover that he is actually looking at another man! And imagine a woman being stirred to lust, and then upon closer examination find that she is looking at another woman! That is exactly what happens to a lustful person, because he/she begins to lust as soon as the eyes start to rove — before he/she even knows what or who is the object in view.

        a. Romans 1:26 says, “even their __________ did change the natural use into that which is against nature.”

      b. Romans 1:27 states, “And likewise also the ______, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another.”

To wicked minds already in the habit of lust and

immorality, perversion is just the next step down.

Question: This discussion inevitably leads to the question, “Should a woman wear pants?” Let us look at Deuteronomy 22:5 again: “The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man.” According to Webster’s Dictionary, the word pertain means, “to have reference to, to relate.” So with the question at hand, do pants “relate” or “have reference” to men, or to women?

Any honest person has to admit that pants  have

reference to men — not to women.

That is clearly shown in the often used phrase, “Who wears the pants in your family?” What does that mean? It is usually said because a woman is taking over her husband’s position of authority and leadership in the home. In that example, pants “relate to, have reference to” the man and his position. If pants pertain to a man, then according to the Bible, women should not be wearing them.

Illustration: We are living in a society where people can read less and less, so more things are going to pictures and symbols. For “Deer Crossing” signs, there is now just a picture of a running deer. For “Stop Ahead” signs, there is now only a picture of a wordless, red, stop sign, and an arrow.

What about public Rest Rooms? More and more, the

doors are appearing with no words, just symbols of men or women on the door.

Guess which door has the pants on it? Right — the men’s door!

Guess which door has the dress on it? Right — the women’s door!

Even the unsaved world knows that pants “pertain,

have reference to, relate to” men — not to women.

Question: What would you do if you went to use a public Rest Room, and there were no words on either door, just symbols of people with pants on both doors? Which door would you enter? Hard choice? I hope you are not in a big hurry! Would you get out your magnifying glass and try to see the labels on the pants, whether they said, “Jeans for Men,” or “Jeans for Women?” Sound ridiculous? It is. And so it is with Christians who claim to be obeying the Lord in this matter — when, in fact, they are clearly disobeying the whole spirit or reason that God required men and women to wear different clothing from each other. LABELS do not cause lust — it is the LOOK of a garment that causes lust.

B. The man’s clothes.

    1. Genesis 9:22 says that Ham saw the __________________ of his father, and told his two brothers about it.

    2. The next verse says that Shem and Japheth took a garment and walked ________________, and covered their father.

   3. That verse stresses that “ their __________ were backward, and they saw not their father’s nakedness.”

    4. Exodus 20:26 says that they were not to go up by steps to the altar, “that thy __________________ be not discovered thereon.”

Illustration: It is generally accepted (even in many Christian circles), that there is nothing wrong with a man running around with few clothes on; because, we are told, “Women do not lust at the sight of a man, but at his touch.” That may be what the psychologists say, but what does the Bible say?

    5. According to Genesis 39:1,7, Potiphar’s wife “cast her ________ upon Joseph; and she said, Lie with me.”

    6. Verse 8 of that same chapter says, “But he ______________.”

    7. Verse 10 says that she tried to talk him into immorality day by day, but “he hearkened not unto her, to lie ______ her, or to be ________ her.”

Please carefully note that Potiphar’s wife could not even

get Joseph to be close  to her — let alone touch her.

But she was certainly filled with lust just at the sight of Joseph.

Note: Read the Song of Solomon in the Bible, and you will find that both the husband and wife are equally stirred at the sight of each other. Men and boys commonly run around today wearing no shirt, and only a pair of jogging shorts. They justify themselves by saying that women and girls do not look at them.

Remember, God made coats  for both  Adam and Eve (Genesis 3:7, 21).

He fully clothed them both, and did not allow Adam to just keep the apron.

If it is immodest for girls and women to wear garments above the knee,

then it is also immodest for boys and men to wear them.

It is the same problem as sitting across from a woman with a garment on that does not cover the knees — you can see right up the person’s leg. With boys and men, it is even worse, at times, because they pay no attention whatsoever as to how they sit. It is a fact that most Christian schools would never let their boys wear shorts in class, but when it comes to sports, all standards of appearance are thrown to the wind. It is but another sad proof that many Christians have made sports their god — just like the world has done.

    8. Genesis 9:25 says, “____________ be Canaan; a servant of servants shall he be unto his brethren.”

Note: This curse was placed upon Canaan after Ham, his father, saw the nakedness of Noah. (Genesis 9:22)

God does not want women/girls to see men/boys unclothed

or immodestly dressed, and God also does not want men/boys

to see other men/boys unclothed or immodestly dressed.

The public schools (and, sadly, even many Christian schools) totally disregard this principle. Boys and girls have to dress and undress in wide open locker rooms right in front of everyone. The showers are not private, but are in one wide open room. Even the toilets in some schools are in a wide open room, with no stalls. There is not a boy or a girl who can honestly say that they did not feel embarrassed the first time they had to undress in front of a room full of people, or take a shower in front of many others, or even have to use the toilet in front of a bunch of people. Only when a person has become callused to seeing so much nakedness does it become a common thing. Whether people get used to seeing the nakedness of others or not, God still condemns the practice, outside of marriage.

Note: Some argue that Ham’s sin was not in seeing his naked father, but in committing some immoral, perverted act with his drunken father who had passed out from consuming too much wine. That is not true for at least a couple of clear reasons.

If that was the case, verse 23 would not have been so careful to explain how that Shem and Japheth covered up Noah without seeing him. If there was nothing wrong with seeing their naked father, they would have just walked in forward and thrown something over their dad.

Also, the Bible uses certain terminology when dealing with intimacy between a husband and wife; or, in many cases, in the matter of wicked perversion.

    9. In Genesis 19:5-7, a couple of angels came to take Lot out of Sodom before they destroyed it. A crowd of men at his door told Lot, “bring them out unto us, that we may ________ them.”

   10. Now this did not have reference to shaking their hands and becoming acquainted with them, as is seen by Lot’s statement in verse 7, “I pray you, brethren, do not so ________________.”

    11. The same terminology is used in Judges 19:22,23, where a traveler is staying at another man’s house, and a group of men gathered outside and said, “Bring forth the man that came into thine house, that we may ________ him.”

    12. Once again, they were not talking about a “friendly welcome” to their city, but about wicked, perverted immorality, as is seen by the home owner’s statement in verse 23, “Nay, my brethren, nay, I pray you, do not so ________________; seeing that this man is come into mine house, do not this folly.”

No terminology is used in the case of Ham to insinuate

in any way that he knew  his father in a perverted, immoral sense.

His sin was in seeing the nakedness of his father.

Note: The biggest area of compromise in modest clothing today seems to be in the realm of sports. Man’s physical prowess and strength in sports means absolutely nothing to God.

    13. Psalm 147:10,11 reminds us that God “taketh not pleasure in the ________ of a man.”

    14. According to I Timothy 4:8, “bodily exercise profiteth ____________: but godliness is profitable unto all things.”

We constantly hear that sports builds character — but

we constantly see the opposite to be true — sports builds

pride and conceit — both of which are an abomination to God.

What God is pleased with is godliness in a person’s life. If certain sports dress immodestly, and a person cannot stand to give up watching or participating in them, then that person has an idol in his life.

    10. The true spirit of that principle is that there is supposed to be a difference in the “________” of the clothes, not just the “labels.”

    11. The devil is behind look alike clothing for men and women, because if you cannot tell at a glance whether you are looking at a man or a woman, then your eyes will be drawn to the _____________________ in the way God has made men and women — thus causing lust.

    12. A lustful person actually begins to lust as soon as the eyes start to ________ — before he/she even knows at what or whom their eyes are looking.

    13. Deuteronomy 22:5 says that a “woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a ________.”

    14. Any honest person has to admit that pants have reference to ______, not women.

    15. It is the psychologist’s lie that women do not lust after the sight of men, but only at their touch, because Potiphar’s wife could not even get ____________ to be close to her, let alone touch her — but she lusted exceedingly.

    16. If it is immodest for girls and women to wear garments shorter than the knee, then it is also immodest for ______ and ________ to wear them.

    17. A curse was placed upon Canaan after Ham, his father, saw the __________________ of Noah.

    18. Whether people get used to seeing the nakedness of others or not, God still __________________ the practice.

    19. Ham’s sin was not in committing some perverted act with his drunken father, but in seeing his nakedness; because the Bible stresses how Shem and Japheth covered up Noah without ____________ him.

   20. If certain sports dress immodestly, and you cannot give up watching or participating in them, then you have an ________ in your life.

Chapter 3

III. Jewelry.

A. Men’s jewelry.

    1. When the wayward son came home to his father in Luke 15:20-24, the father said to “bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ________ on his hand, and shoes on his feet.” (vs.22)

    2. Esther 8:2 reveals that “the king took off his ________, which he had taken from Haman, and gave it unto Mordecai.”

    3. When God used Joseph to interpret Pharaoh’s dream of the coming famine, Pharaoh then “took off his ________ from his hand, and put it upon Joseph’s hand.” (Genesis 41:39-42)

Note: There seems to be nothing wrong with a man wearing a ring, and there are two examples of men wearing gold chains about their necks: Joseph in Genesis 41:42, and Daniel in Daniel 5:29. These were certainly not feminine little gold necklaces, because they symbolized authority. They were obviously large and easily seen.

God has clearly set forth the example that men are not to wear women’s clothes, nor to have have long hair. If God does not want men to look like women in their appearance, then He certainly does not want men wearing feminine-looking jewelry.

At the time of the writing of this booklet, many men and boys are getting their ears pierced, and are wearing earrings.

Where did men ever get the idea to pierce their ears?

They did not get that idea from the Bible. There is only one type of man in the Bible that is told to have a hole put into his ear (and then it says nothing about putting an earring into the hole), and that is in the case of a slave who did not want to leave his master. So they were to bore a hole in his ear showing that he was a slave forever.

    4. Exodus 21:5,6 says, “and his master shall ________ his ear through with an awl; and he shall serve him for ever.”

Note:   It is obvious that men did not normally have holes in their ears (pierced ears), or this sign or symbol of being a life-long slave would have meant absolutely nothing. Then where did men ever get the idea to pierce their ears?

Men are making the same mistake that Adam did back in the Garden of Eden — they are following the women. Men are piercing their ears, because they are following the women.

    5. Isaiah 3:12 says, “As for my people, children are their oppressors, and __________ rule over them. O my people, they which lead thee cause thee to ______, and destroy the way of thy paths.”

    6. According to Romans 1:26,27, “For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their __________ did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And ________________ also the ______, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was meet.”

Much to many people’s surprise, the sin of sodomy  did not start with men,

it started with the women. Women first went against nature,

and then the men followed them into that sin.

    7. Ezekiel 16:49 shares the same truth, “Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister __________, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in ______ and in her __________________, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.”

Note: Man is sinning in piercing his ears, because he is following the woman into sin once again. Why it is sin will be dealt with in the next section.

B. Women’s jewelry.

— Please read Genesis 24:1-47 to find the first mention of jewelry, and answer the following questions.

    1. Abraham asked the “eldest ____________ of his house” to do something. (vs.2)

2 That something was to go unto Abraham’s country and kindred, and “take a ________” for his son Isaac. (vs.4)

    3. When the servant’s prayer was answered, he gave her “a golden ______________,” and “two __________________ for her hands.” (vs.22)

    4. Rebekah was so excited about all of this, that she “______, and told them of her mother’s house these things.” (vs.28)

    5. When her brother looked at her, “he saw the ______________ and __________________ upon his sister’s hands.” (vs.30)

    6. The servant was the one who had “___________ the earring upon her face, and the bracelets upon her hands.” (vs.47)

Note: Evidently Abraham saw nothing wrong with women wearing jewelry, or he would not have allowed such things around his house for the servant to take with him on the trip to find a daughter-in-law.

— Please read Esther 2:1-17, and answer the following questions.

    7. Mordecai “brought up Hadassah, that is, ____________, his uncle’s daughter.” (vs.7)

    8. When each maid took her turn to go in before the king, “whatsoever she ______________ was given her to go with her out of the house of the women unto the king’s house.” (vs.13)

Note: You can imagine the huge selection of fancy clothes and jewelry from which these young ladies had to pick. Many of them probably left that place with diamond earrings as big as chandeliers, and clothes as wild as you can imagine. You give some young ladies an unlimited choice of jewels and clothes, and many would go to the far extreme!

    9. But when Esther’s turn came, “she required ______________” but what the king’s chamberlain appointed. (vs.15)

Note: Esther did not ask for any wild clothes or jewelry, but only what was appointed to her by those in charge. She was not out to impress the king, but to just be her natural self.

    10. The result was that “the king loved Esther above ______ the women, and she obtained grace and favour in his sight more than ______ the virgins,” so he set the crown upon her head and made her queen. (vs.17)

Esther proves that it is not clothes and jewels that make

the woman, but godliness, meekness, and modesty.

    11. I Peter 3:1-6 talks to wives and tells them not to be adorable just because of the “outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; But let it be the hidden man of the heart…,” and “a ________ and __________ spirit.” (vs. 4)

Note: That passage brings up three areas: hair, jewelry, and clothes. None of those are to be the major attraction of a woman. Hair, jewelry, and clothes mean nothing without a godly, meek, and quiet spirit — a personality that will bless you for many, many years.

You will notice that all jewelry is not forbidden. Abraham obviously allowed it in moderation. Esther did not ask for any jewelry from the king’s house, but neither did she refuse to wear what was appointed to her.

That leaves us with the last passage, I Peter 3. This is a passage which is abused and twisted many times. Some people use this passage as a basis that it is a sin for a woman to set her hair, or to put anything fancy like gold, clips, or ribbons in her hair. They go on further to use this passage to forbid the wearing of any gold — whether it be in rings, earrings, watches, or other jewelry.

If this passage forbids a woman to set her hair

and to put anything  in it; and if it forbids her to wear

any   gold; then it also forbids her to wear any  clothes!

The last phrase says, “or of putting on of apparel.”

It is quickly apparent that they are not interpreting this passage correctly, because that would be neither Scriptural or modest. The truth being taught here is obviously modesty and moderation. Be attractive because of who you are — not because of what you wear.

Question: The question inevitably comes up (as it already has in the men’s section) as to whether it is going too far for a woman to pierce her body for the wearing of jewelry. As of the writing of this booklet, pierced ears, noses, cheeks, tongues, and even eyebrows have all been seen.

God did not make holes in people’s earlobes, eyebrows, tongues, etc., so the flesh must be cut to insert the piece of jewelry. This process has changed over the years. It used to be done by numbing the area where the hole was to be made. Then a large needle-like object would be pushed right through the earlobe. Today, the cut is made so quickly with instruments, that many times the ear (or other body part) is not even numbed (even though there is still sharp pain involved). The earrings are immediately pushed through the hole and fastened on the back side. The earrings cannot be removed for a time, because the body will automatically try and heal the hole which has been made (which ought to tell you that God does not want the hole there).

   12. I Corinthians 3:16 says, “Know ye not that ye are the

____________ of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?”

    13. According to I Corinthians 6:19,20, “your ________ is the temple of the Holy Ghost,” and you are thus to “glorify God in your ________, and in your spirit, which are God’s.”

According to these verses, a Christian’s body is not

to be defiled  or marred in any fashion like the world,

because our bodies are the temple of the Holy Ghost.

    14. Leviticus 19:28 says, “Ye shall not make any ________________ in your flesh for the dead, nor print any __________ upon you: I am the LORD.”

    15. I Thessalonians 4:13 says, “But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no ________.”

    16. According to John 11:35, Jesus cried when Lazarus died, “Jesus ________.”

Note: God does not forbid us from crying when a saved, loved one dies. We do not sorrow as those that have no hope, because we know that they are with the Lord. Our sorrow is because we miss them. But God says that it is going too far when a person cuts himself or puts marks on his body to show such sorrow. SO our sorrow is to be done in moderation. In the same way, I Peter 3:3,4 teaches that jewelry is okay, in moderation.

If you have to cut your flesh to wear the jewelry, is that

not going beyond moderation? If it is not — then what is?

It is common to see ladies with two or three pierced earrings in each ear. How much is too much? Are two holes too much? Three holes? Women are also wearing pierced jewelry in their noses. Is that going too far? What about a pierced cheek? What about a pierced tongue?

If you have one hole in your flesh for jewelry, then you

are a hypocrite to condemn any of these other piercings.

    17. The Bible says in James 2:10, “For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in ______ point, he is ____________ of ______.”

Note: If you have one hole, then you have broken the principle just as much as the person with several holes. If you have pierced your ears, then you cannot say anything about the person who pierces her nose, or her tongue, or her cheek. You, too, have broken God’s command not to defile the temple of the Holy Ghost.

Illustration: An article appeared in the Journal of the American Medical Association, which quoted Dr. Max Thorner 100 years ago warning of complications from piercing the ears, and also commenting on the barbaric nature of the practice. “And thus it happens that mothers, who would otherwise protect their little ones from every harm and pain, will not shrink from subjecting them to an unnecessary, inexcusable, and painful procedure, only to adorn them with the coveted jewel. This explains why such a barbaric custom as that of piercing the ears could have survived to our present times.”(Journal of the American Medical Association, January 26, 1994)

This doctor called piercing the ears an “unnecessary,

in-excusable, and painful procedure, only to adorn them with

the coveted jewel.” Even the world admits that pierced

jewelry is an “unnecessary, inexcusable” procedure.

Note: It almost sounds like the doctor thought of pierced jewelry in the same league as idolatry. He called such jewelry the coveted jewel. He might not have been too far off there!

    18. Genesis 35:2-4 says, “Then Jacob said unto his household, and to all that were with him, Put away the strange ________ that are among you, and be clean, and change your garments: And let us arise, and go up to Bethel; and I will make there an altar unto God, who answered me in the day of my distress, and was with me in the way which I went. And they gave unto Jacob all the strange gods which were in their hand, and all their ________________ which were in their ears; and Jacob hid them under the oak which was by Shechem.”

Note: Jacob never told them to take off their jewelry — just to put away their gods and be clean. Whatever the case was with their earrings, they felt the need to take them off, and associated them with idolatry.

Why do women in our day long so much for pierced earrings?

No godly woman ever got the idea to pierce her ears

from her reading of the Bible — she got that idea

from watching the women of the world.

    19. I John 2:15 says, “Love ______ the __________, neither the ____________ that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.”

Note: Many Christians readily admit that tattooing the body is wrong, but they try and justify the pierced jewelry. They go to Leviticus 19:28, to prove that tattooing is wrong. “Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the LORD.” But we have already looked at that verse, and it also forbids the cutting of the flesh.

What is really interesting, is that God condemns the

two practices together in the very same verse:

the printing of marks upon your flesh — tattooing;

and the cutting of your flesh — body piercing.

Is that a coincidence? Not hardly, because even the world itself puts pierced jewelry and tattoos in the exact same category, too.

Illustration: In a February 1993 issue of The Grand Rapids Press, Grand Rapids, Michigan, Tom Rademacher had an article entitled, “On the Cutting Edge of Body Adornment.” The article talked about two matters, and guess what two things they considered to be of like nature? That’s right — body piercings for jewelry, and tattooing. Listen to why he covered both in the same article: “Locally, the piercing industry is served by a small handful of practitioners. Most work in conjunction with tattoo shops.” (The Grand Rapids Press, February 1993, Tom Rademacher).

Even the world knows that pierced jewelry and tattooing

is the same thing — cutting the flesh for adornment.

Question: Did Old Testament believers have pierced ears? Some people insist that could have been the only type of earring at that time. The question has been asked, “Well, if they did not pierce their ears, how do you think they wore earrings back then — with ‘spring-loaded’ clips?” That question is supposed to embarrass the person opposing pierced jewelry, but it really shows the ignorance and evolutionistic thinking of the one asking the question. You see, it is the evolutionists that teach that man was backward and ignorant as he was evolving (you know, the ‘cave man’ days), but the Bible teaches the exact opposite — that man was very intelligent in the beginning, and that the farther he put God out of his life, the more ignorant he became. How could Abraham’s servant, in Genesis 24 (so early in history), put an earring on Rebekah’s face, if it was not a pierced earring? There are three reasons that that is a foolish question.

#1 — Because man had tremendous ability in metal-working long before that.

    20. Way back in Genesis 4:22, Tubalcain was “an instructor of every artificer in __________ and ________.” Man had great ability to form many types of metals, and methods of attachment.

#2 — Because all the earrings mentioned were gold. Pure gold is soft, and could be squeezed against the earlobe without having to pierce it. It would be more like a clip-on earring pressing against the earlobe.

#3 — Because no young lady in her right mind would ever let a perfect stranger (Abraham’s servant) come up to her and let him put a hole right through her ear. She would run away screaming!

There is only one reason that God ever told anyone to put a hole in someone’s ear.

    21. Deuteronomy 15:16,17 tells what to do when a servant was free to go from his master, but chose not to do so. “Then thou shalt take an awl, and thrust it through ______ ear unto the door, and he shall be thy servant forever. And also unto thy ______________________ thou shalt do likewise.”

Was it a common practice to have pierced ears in the Old Testament? No.

If it was, then what would be the sense of putting the hole in the slave’s ear?

It would have meant absolutely nothing, if everyone walking around also had

pierced ears. The hole was a sign, a symbol, that that person was a “slave for life.”

Note: When a Christian walks around following the world’s customs, does it not show that he/she is a slave to them?

What can you do if you already have pierced ears, nose, cheek, tongue, etc.?

You may not be able to heal the holes or the scars, but you can certainly

discontinue the practice. Take the pierced jewelry out, and never wear it again.

Illustration: One missionary wrote to us and said, “I agree that pierced jewelry is wrong. We will not let our daughters get their ears pierced. But my wife already has holes in her ears, so I am going to let her continue to wear pierced earrings.”

Is that real repentance over sin? What will those daughters think one day when they grow up? “Mom wears pierced earrings, but they tell us it is wrong. If it is wrong, then why does Mom still wear them?”

What about all of the girls who will watch the missionaries’ wife in their ministry? When they see her wearing pierced jewelry, will they come up to her and ask her if it is wrong to have pierced ears? No. They will see her wearing them, and they will automatically assume that it is okay.

On the other hand, if they notice that she has holes in her earlobes, but that she never wears pierced earrings, then they will probably ask her about it. Then she can share how she did wrong, but repented of it, and no longer wears them. That is the only way that she can be a good example to the next generation — to take them out and not wear them.

A smoker may have scarred lungs from years of smoking,

but the right thing to do is quit  smoking. What if he said,

“My lungs are already scarred, so I might as well keep smoking.”?

Is that true repentance over sin? No. True repentance results in a change.

Question: If it is not right to cut your flesh, then what about having a surgery? Should the Christian refuse all surgeries?

Surgery is not done to mar the body, but to make it better. Also, after surgery, the body is stitched up so that it will heal. God Himself performed the first surgery.

   22. Genesis 2:21,22 states, “And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and ____________ up the __________ instead thereof; And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.”

Note: God opened up Adam’s flesh, and then closed the wound so it would heal. So it is permissible to cut the flesh for the purpose of surgery.

Chapter 4

IV. Cologne/Perfume And Makeup.

A. In regard to men.

    1. In Exodus 30:22-30, a fragrant mixture was blended to anoint the tabernacle vessels and furniture, and also to anoint __________ and his sons. (vs.30)

    2. According to verses 31-33 of that same chapter, ____ _______ else could use it.

    3. In Luke 7:37-47, Jesus allowed His feet to be anointed with _________________.

    4. Jesus allowed Mary to anoint His feet with a very costly ointment, and it was so fragrant, that the house was ____________ with the odor. (John 12:1-3)

    5. Psalm 45:6-8 talks of being anointed with “the oil of _________________,” and thus his garments smelling like all sorts of good smells.

There seems to be nothing wrong with men wearing

colognes which help them to smell good. If there

was something wrong with it, God would have

certainly forbidden the priests from wearing it.

B. In regard to women.

    1. Perfume.

        a. Proverbs 27:9 says that “Ointment and ______________ rejoice the heart.”

        b. When Naomi was instructing Ruth how to Scripturally get a husband, she told her to “Wash thyself therefore, and ____________ thee.” (Ruth 3:1-3)

There also seems to be nothing in the Bible which

would forbid a woman from the wearing of perfume.

Whether with men, or with women, God wants

people to smell good — not repulsive.

Note: God wanted the priests that served in His presence to smell good, just like you want the person who sits or works close to you to smell clean and fresh. When people work or perspire, they usually need something to aid them in not smelling repulsive.

If you want to point other people to Jesus Christ, smelling repulsive is certainly not going to help you in that goal. A daily bath, change of clothes, and some good-smelling cologne/perfume never killed anyone, but the lack of it has just about killed many a person!

Question: When do you normally put on your cologne/perfume? When you go out somewhere? When you go to work? When you go to church?

If you only want to make sure that you smell good when you are going out in public, what kind of a message is that sending to your husband/wife and family?

        c. Immoral women use perfume to entice men to sin with them, as in Proverbs 7:10-17, “I have _____________ my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon.”

Note: At a time when a record number of homes are breaking up, you had better think about looking and smelling nice for those who matter the most — your husband/wife, and your family.

    2. Makeup.

        a. In II Kings 9:30-37, wicked Queen Jezebel “______________ her face, and tired her head.” (vs.30)

        b. According to Jeremiah 4:30, “though thou rentest thy ________ with painting, in vain shalt thou make thyself fair.”

Note: The word rentest means “to tear apart.” The word is used in regard to women using makeup in such a way as to make their eyes standout and look bigger than they are. This is done by painting the eyelids and the eyelashes.

        c. Proverbs 6:24-26 refers to an immoral woman and says, “neither let her take thee with her ______________.”

This verse makes it clear that the purpose of making

the eyes stand out, is to get a man’s attention,

and to break down his will. No passage in Scripture

puts makeup in a very favorable light.

Note: Some young ladies would think that it was a tragedy if they did not have their makeup on, and they happened to meet a prospective young man. They are setting themselves up for a fall someday. If a man will not be attracted to you for what you really are, then what makes you think he will stay with you when he finds out what you really look like after you are married? If a man has to have a painted up doll to love, then what will he do when gray hair and wrinkles come to you?

How The Bible Says You Can Be Saved

1. Do you realize that you have sinned? (Rom. 3:23) (I John 1:8)

2. Do you realize the penalty for your sin? (Rom. 6:23)

3. Do you realize that if you die in your sin, you will go to hell?  (Psa. 9:17) (Prov. 15:24) (Luke 12:4,5)

4. Do you realize that the Lord Jesus Christ paid that death penalty for you? (Rom. 5:8) (I Pet. 3:18) (I Pet. 2:24)

5. Do you realize that it is only through the shed blood of the Lord Jesus Christ that you can be saved, and not through any good works of your own? (I John 1:7) (I Pet. 1:18,19) (Eph. 2:8,9) (Titus 3:5-7)

6. Do you realize that after Jesus died for your sins, He arose victorious from the grave the third day, proving that His sacrifice was sufficient to pay for all of the sins of the whole world? (I Cor. 15:1-4)

7. Do you realize that to be saved you must repent (you must have the desire to turn from your sin and false beliefs, and for the Lord Jesus Christ to cleanse you from all your sin)? (Luke 13:3) (Acts 3:19) (Acts 26:20)

8. Do you realize that after you get saved, God’s first command for you is for you to get baptized and then to live for Him?  (Acts 2:41) (II Cor. 5:17)

9. Are you ready to now pray and ask the Lord Jesus Christ to forgive you of all your sins, and to save you? (John 1:12) (Rom. 10:13) (I John 5:13)

* If you are, then bow your head right now and confess to God that you are a sinner deserving judgment. Ask the Lord Jesus Christ to forgive you of all your sins, and to save you. Ask Him to cleanse your life, and to give you the power to live for Him. Ask Him to lead you to a good, Bible-preaching church, where you can follow the first command after salvation — that of getting baptized and publicly confessing your faith in Him. Ask Him to help you find some good Christian friends to encourage you in the faith and to help you grow.

q — I have just asked the Lord Jesus Christ to save me.
