Bible Study Course

Music

Welcome to Book 2 in the Practical Christian Living Series of the Liberty Bible Course. We hope that you enjoyed Book 1 on the Christian’s Appearance. This booklet will deal with the subject of Music. There is getting to be less and less of a difference between the music of the church, and the music of the world. This booklet will show you what type of music pleases God, and what type does not. This Bible Study Course is written to be used with the KING JAMES BIBLE, otherwise your answers are going to be incorrect. Please get your Bible, and begin another exciting study that just might change your life!

Chapter 1

I. The Content of the Music.

A. We should sing Scriptural music.

Note: By content, we mean “what is written in the song.” We are talking here about the words of the song. By scriptural, we mean “according to the truth of God’s Word.”

The words of a song are never to be contrary

to anything that the Bible teaches.

1. According to Ephesians 5:19, our songs should be “____________ and hymns and spiritual songs.”

2. Colossians 3:16 tells us further to teach and admonish “one another in ____________ and hymns and spiritual songs.”

Note: What is a psalm? Look at the following verses to discover the answer.

3. Psalm 98:5 says to “Sing unto the Lord with the harp; with the harp, and the __________ of a psalm.”

4. According to Psalm 105:2, we are to “Sing unto him, ________ psalms unto him: talk ye of all his wondrous works.”

5. James 5:13 tells us that an afflicted person should pray, and a merry person should “________ psalms.”

Note: We see that psalms are “words that can be sung,” but where can we find those words? Read on to find out.

6. I Chronicles 16:7 records that __________ delivered a psalm to Asaph to thank the Lord.

7. According to verse 4 of that same chapter, “certain of the ______________” were to minister before the Lord, and to praise Him.

8. Verses 5 and 6 then record that __________ was the chief of those that made music.

Note: We see that David wrote psalms. Asaph led the musicians to play the songs on their instruments. The Levites then sang the songs. But are these psalms just David’s ideas or poems? Read on to find the answer.

9. Mark 12:10 says, “And have ye not read this __________________; The stone which the builders rejected is become the head of the corner.”

10. Now look at Psalm 118:22. It says, “The stone which the builders refused is become the ________ stone of the corner.”

Mark 12:10 says that this phrase is Scripture. David

wrote more than just his ideas — God used him to

write Scripture, the Word of God, the Bible.

11. According to II Timothy 3:16,17 “All __________________ is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.”

12. II Peter 1:20, 21 tells us that “no prophecy of the scripture is of any ______________ interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.”

13. Acts 1:16 also mentions “Men and brethren, this __________________ must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus.”

14. The above verse refers back to Psalm 41:9, which states, “Yea, mine own familiar ____________, in whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me.”

Note: We need to sing songs that are scriptural — songs that have Bible truth in them. Scriptural songs can help you, because the Bible says in Romans 10:17, “So then __________ cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”

– The Content of the Music.

A. We should sing Scriptural music.

B. We should sing sacred music (hymns).

1. Colossians 3:16 says that we are to teach and admonish one another “in psalms and __________ and spiritual songs.”

Note: What are hymns? There seems to be utter confusion now, but hymns used to be understood to be “music appropriate to be played and sung in church; rich, majestic music, in words and sound, that glorify God.”

What is sacred music? Sacred music is “music set apart, in words and sound, for the worship of the Lord.”

It is interesting to note that as churches have forsaken

hymns and sacred music, they have renamed  their services.

Even they seem to realize that some of their music is no longer

appropriate to sing in a regular church service, so they have

renamed it the Contemporary Service.

You will notice that this verse says we are to teach and admonish one another with hymns. The problem that we run into here, is that the church has already been flooded with music that is not hymns/sacred music. We must get back to the proper standard for church music. How do we go about doing that? Read on, and you will see.

Note: Why do we assemble together as a church? Read Hebrews 10:25 to find the following answers.

    a. It says, “Not forsaking the ____________________ of ourselves together.”

    b. Church attendance has always been a problem for people, because that verse says we are not to forsake assembling together “as the manner of ________ is.” In other words, some were not meeting together with the church.

    c. That verse goes on to tell what the believers are supposed to do when they meet together: “__________________ one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.”

Note: Exhort means “to stand beside another, and urge him/her to pursue a future course of conduct.”

    d. Hebrews 3:13 further explains the meaning of the word exhort in relation to the church meeting together. It says we should “exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of ______.”

So we are to meet together and expose sin for what it really is. We should be on our guard, because that verse tells us that sin is deceitful. It will have the appearance of being acceptable, and that is why it is so important to reveal its true purpose and result. James 1:15 tells us that when sin is finished, it “bringeth forth __________.”

Why has music in the church become so worldly?

Because exhortation has been replaced by entertainment.

Platforms should be renamed to stages  in many churches,

because it is used more for performances,

than it is for the preaching  of God’s Word. As churches

have laid aside the strong preaching of God’s Word,

they have also laid aside the hymns.

The Bible says in II Timothy 4:2-4, “Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having ______________ ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.”

Churches are now catering to the lusts of their people by forsaking doctrine (just like the Charismatics and Promise Keepers have instructed them to do), and giving them the entertainment for which their flesh lusts.

Question: Should taped background music be allowed in the church? It has played an important part in the change in church music today.

    a. I Corinthians 12:18 says that God has set the members “in the body, as it hath ______________ him.”

    b. Verse 21 of that same chapter says that “the eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no ________ of thee.”

    c. It goes on to say, “nor again the head to the feet, I have no ________ of you.”

   d. Verse 22 further states, “Nay, much more those members of the body, which seem to be more ____________, are necessary.”

What is the true message of taped background music

to the congregation? It is saying, “Our musicians are not

good enough — we need a more professional sound.”

Note: That is just like a slap in the face to the church members. The Bible clearly says that the feeble are necessary; but in practice, the church is bypassing them as not good enough. What will be the next step?

The next group to be replaced will be the vocalists.

They are the ones who rejected the musicians as

not professional enough to accompany them.

The Bible says in Galatians 6:7, “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also ________.” God says in I Corinthians 12:25, that “the members should have the same ________ one for another.”

The vocalists rejected the musicians, so they will reap what they have sown — they will also be rejected themselves. If the musicians are not professional-sounding enough, and so are replaced by taped music; then why not just bring in the whole tape with the professional singer on it, too? There are many wanna-be vocalists out there who just hide behind the volume of a tape track while they are singing, so why not just replace them, too? Why not just play your favorite CD of your favorite professional singer?

Who will be next for replacement? The pastor, because

there are also more professional speakers to be found out there.

If he, as the spiritual leader, allows the vocalists to snub the musicians;

and the congregation to snub the vocalists, then he is next on the list.

One day, churches like that will be getting their sermons on a big screen — either through videos sent to them through a mail service, or piped in live via satellite. After all, one of the churches’ biggest expenses is paying the pastor, and he may not even be a very good public speaker. So why not get the best for less? For a small monthly fee, why not hear the best that the nation has to offer? Does that sound a little far-fetched? You just wait and see!

It is also no surprise that we are seeing such a rise in popularity

to sing children’s choruses in church worship services.

What were children’s choruses designed to do?

To entertain   little children in Sunday School to keep

their attention, and to try and teach them some

simple Bible truths at the same time.

Does that tell you anything about the present day caliber of Christianity that today’s adults seem to have? I Corinthians 3:1, 2 is very fitting for today’s church to sit up and hear: “And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto __________ in Christ. I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able.”

What is true of babies? They cannot do anything for themselves.

They have to be entertained, or they cry.

Today’s Christian seems perfectly content to “live like a

baby.” He cries out, “I cannot understand those old hymns.

I cannot understand that old Bible (the King James).”

So he finds a church that entertains with worldly music and a

watered-down translation of the Bible.

I Corinthians 13:11 reminds us, “When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away _________________ things.”

Sadly, today, the church is bringing back out the childish toys for the worldly Christians who sit in the pews. The answer is to get back to the Sacred Book that has not changed (the King James Bible) and preach it with power. Then you will have some people who will also love sacred music, and the grand old hymns of the faith.

2. Remember what the Bible says in Romans 12:2? “And be not __________________ to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”

3. Colossians 3:23 tells us, “And ____________________ ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men.”

4. The Bible also says, “Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or ____________________ ye do, do all to the glory of God.” (I Corinthians 10:31)

Note: No time is acceptable to go according to the world, and do something according to its standards. I John 2:15 says, “Love not the world, neither the ____________ that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” Much music out there should not be played in church, because it is obviously worldly. If music is too worldly to be played or sung in church, then it is just plain too worldly to play or sing at all.

— The Content of the Music.

A. We should sing Scriptural music.

B. We should sing sacred music (hymns).

C. We should sing spiritual music.

1. Back to Colossians 3:16 again, we see that we should be singing, “psalms and hymns and __________________ songs.”

Note: What are spiritual songs? For that, we must go to the Bible and define what spiritual is.

2. Romans 8:6 says, “For to be carnally minded is death; but to be ______________________ minded is life and peace.”

3. In that same chapter, in verse 1, it says, “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the __________, but after the Spirit.”

4. Verse 5 of that same chapter again states, “For they that are after the __________ do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the ____________ the things of the Spirit.”

Spiritual songs appeal to the spirit  of a person — not to

the flesh. This is the reason why good music is so hard to come by today,

because Christians are so carnal, so fleshly-minded.

Most all of the Christian music being written today

is geared to attract the flesh, because that is what sells.

5. I Corinthians 3:1 says, “And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto ____________, even as unto babes in Christ.”

6. I Peter 2:2 reminds us that we are not to remain babes, but to “desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may ________ thereby.”

Note: Growth results, not from entertainment, but from exhortation from the Word of God.

7. The church is very important to the growth of a Christian, as is seen in Ephesians chapter 4.

    a. According to verses 11,12, God gave apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers “for the ____________________ of the saints.”

    b. Verse 13 gives the goal of “unity of the faith, and of the _________________ of the Son of God.”

   c. The point of verse 14 is “That we henceforth be no more ________________, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine.”

    d. Verse 15 further states that we “________ up into him in all things.”

Note: Ephesians 4 is not being fulfilled in the lives of many Christians today. They are not growing up. They are still babes in Christ, and enjoy the things that babes do.

The question was asked back on page three, as to how we can go about getting back to the right standard for church music. That question has already been partly answered — strong preaching out of the King James Bible, which exhorts the listeners.

The second part of the answer is that people must APPLY that preaching PERSONALLY. Too many people think, “Okay, so we should be careful of what music is allowed to be sung in the church — but I can listen to other types of music when I am on my own.” James 1:22 reminds us “But be ye __________ of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.” If you do not obey the Word PERSONALLY, then you are deceiving yourself.

Look carefully at Ephesians 5:19. It is almost exactly like Colossians 3:16, but notice an important difference in the beginning of the verse: “Speaking to ____________________ in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs.”

The proper type of music to play in church, is also the

proper type of music for you to listen to in private.

The Christian is not to live a split-personality  life. We are to be

the same all the time. The truth is this: what you listen to

in private, you will eventually bring into the church.

What is the church? Is the church a building? You may want to refresh your memory, by going over the Bible Course on the Church once again.

    a. I Corinthians 3:9 says, “For we are labourers together with God: ye are God’s husbandry, ____ are God’s building.”

    b. According to I Corinthians 3:16, God does not dwell in buildings, but in Christians; because it says, “Know ye not that ____ are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?”

Note: According to Colossians 3:16, is rock music acceptable in a worship service? Well, is rock music “psalms, hymns, or spiritual songs?” No, it does not qualify as any of those. Then according to Ephesians 5:19, neither should you be listening to it by yourself.

According to Colossians 3:16, is country/western music acceptable in a worship service? Well, is country/western music “psalms, hymns, or spiritual songs?” No, it does not qualify as any of those. Then according to Ephesians 5:19, neither should you be listening to it by yourself.

According to Colossians 3:16, is classical music acceptable in a worship service? Well, is classical music “psalms, hymns, or spiritual songs?” (This is dealt with in a later section.) No, it does not qualify as any of those. Then according to Ephesians 5:19, neither should you be listening to it by yourself.

According to Colossians 3:16, is jazz, or the blues, or rap, or easy-listening, or pop music acceptable in a worship service? Well, is jazz, blues, rap, pop, or easy-listening music “psalms, hymns, or spiritual songs? No, it does not qualify as any of those. Then according to Ephesians 5:19, neither should you be listening to it by yourself.

Your true spirituality is what you are by yourself, when no

one else is around. Anyone can put on a show of spirituality

in front of others, but God knows what you are really like

when you are by yourself.  The church is made up of

individual believers, and what individual believers

practice in private, they eventually practice in public.

8. Proverbs 15:3 reminds us that “The eyes of the Lord are in __________ place, beholding the evil and the good.”

9. According to Psalm 139:12, the darkness does not hide a person from God, because “the darkness and the light are both __________ to thee.”

10. The Bible says in Jeremiah 17:10 that God searches the __________.

11. Ezekiel 11:5 tells us that God knows “the things that come into your mind, __________ one of them.”

Note: Sometimes people are tempted to say, “But don’t I ever get a break? Can’t I ever listen to the music that I want? Can’t I ever just relax on my own without having to think about God, or psalms, or hymns, or spiritual songs?”

Do you need a break? A break from God? That would mean that your spirituality is something that you turn on and off, and that there are times when you do not want to think about God.

12. Revelation 2:4,5 reminds us that the Ephesian Church was told to repent, because “thou hast left thy __________ love.”

13. The key to a prosperous life, according to Psalm 1:2,3, is to delight in the law of the Lord, and to “meditate ______ and __________” in it.

14. Once again in Joshua 1:8, the Bible repeats the key to a prosperous and successful life: “This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein ______ and __________.”

15. Isaiah 26:3 says, “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is ____________ on thee: because he trusteth in thee.”

The way to a successful, happy, peaceful life, is to be

always thinking about the Lord. The songs and music of

this world do not turn your attention toward God and

His Word — but psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs do.

The key to happiness in life is not putting God

first sometimes, but all the time.

Note: Matthew 6:33 says, “But seek ye __________ the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”

The church assembled, will mirror the church in private.

Worldly Christians in private, make a worldly church when assembled.

There is to be no double standard for music. Colossians 3:16

tells us what to sing and play to one another, and

Ephesians 5:19 tells us what to sing and play to our-

selves in private — and they are both exactly the same.

Chapter 2

II. The Control of Music.

A. It should give peace.

    1. Ephesians 5:18 commands the Christian not to be drunk, but to “be ____________ with the Spirit.”

Note: What happens when a person is “filled with alcohol?” The person is drunk. The person is controlled by the alcohol. The Bible says a Christian is not to be controlled by alcohol, but is to be controlled by the Holy Spirit. What is the evidence that a person is under the Holy Spirit’s control? Read on to find the answer.

    2. The next verse says, “Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making ____________ in your heart to the Lord.”

The first evidence listed of being filled with

the Holy Spirit is that you have a song in your heart.

Note: Please notice that it is in direct contrast to the drunkard. The drunkard often likes to sing, but what is true of his music? His words will be slurred; he may be out of tune; and his timing will be way off — probably real jerky (speed up — slow down — speed up — slow down).

The Christian’s music should not be that way, because he is not to be walking in the flesh, like the drunkard. Galatians 5:16 tells us to “Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the ________.”

Note: Back to Ephesians 5:19, the Christian’s songs should bring peace. We are to sing “spiritual songs.” As we have seen in Romans 8:6, “For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and __________.”

Spiritual songs  will minister to the mind  and heart

of the Christian, and will result in peace.

    3. According to John 16:33, Jesus has spoken that we “might have __________,” but in the world we will have tribulation.

   4. John 14:27 records Jesus’ words again, “__________ I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”

Note: Does the music you listen to bring peace to your heart, or does it make you moody?

Rock music  does not bring a spirit of peace,

but a spirit of restlessness.

If you are driving a car and listening to rock music, you want to go faster. Something about rock music makes you want to see something happen, or even make something happen! It is a music which makes you feel like breaking out of the mold. It is a music which makes you want to experience something more. It is a music which drives a person onward searching for something — something which is unknown, and never found by its listener. Rock music never brings peace, but restlessness.

It is sad to note how many teenagers commit suicide after listening to rock music. Even the rock musicians themselves seem prone to write songs about death. Godly music leads a person to repentance and hope, but the world’s music leads a person to despair and death. II Corinthians 7:10 explains it: “For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh __________.”

Country/western   music does not bring a spirit of peace,

but a spirit of longing, or sadness, or loneliness.

Much of the time it is referring to an immoral relationship that is going on, and how the person is longing for it again. Or it is referring to someone who has just left the person, and the person just does not know what to do. The words of their songs are wicked and immoral, and their beat is now rock, and there is no way such music can bring peace to the listener’s ears. The Bible, in Isaiah 57:20,21, describes the condition of the country/western listener’s life: “But the wicked are like the troubled sea, when it cannot rest, whose waters cast up mire and dirt. There is no __________, saith my God, to the wicked.” You cannot have peace listening to such music with its wicked talk of immorality, and its rock beat.

— II. The Control of Music.

B. It should be pleasant.

    1. Once again, Ephesians 5:19 says that you should be “singing and making ____________ in your heart to the Lord.”

Note: According to Webster’s, the word melody means “harmony, a sweet and agreeable sound, an organized tone.” (Webster’s Seventh New Collegiate Dictionary @ 1965). Rock music does not meet this standard that God has laid down for music. There often is no melody in rock music — no harmony — no sweet and agreeable sound — no organized tone. This is one reason why “Christian Rock” and “Country/Western Gospel” are not Scriptural music.

Most of the time when you turn on a Christian  radio

station, you cannot tell if you are on the right  station,

because it sounds just like the world.

That is really strange that Christian music should sound so much like the world’s music, because the Bible says in II Corinthians 5:17, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: ______ things are passed away; behold ______ things are become new.” Now does it not seem strange that a person gets saved, and his old music is not replaced by new music? Why would his music still sound the same? Remember, old things are supposed to pass away, and all things are to become new.

Note: Sometimes Christians try and justify their Christian Rock or Country/Western Gospel by saying, “The words of the song are the important thing — not the music. We use Christian words in the songs.”

If it is just the words that are so important to them, and

not the music, then why do they not stick with the hymns

(that have such rich, meaningful words)? Because the truth

is that they do not pay much attention to the words at all

— it is the MUSIC, the BEAT that they really emphasize and crave.

God cares about the music, that it has a proper melody to it. God cares about the sound — just like He cares about the words. There is no such thing as neutral musicall music has an effect upon its listener.

Illustration: Film producers have known for a long time (and radio program producers even before that), that the music behind the words is very important — or the audience does not recognize what the scene is leading up to or showing.

For instance, how do you know when a scene is dangerous? You can just feel through the music that something is about to happen. The music is like kindling, or like gasoline fumes. It sets the stage for something ready to explode at any minute!

How do you know when a scene is sad? You can sense it through the music. Before a tear is shed; before a word is spoken; before a face is seen; you know that something very sad has happened, or will happen in just a moment.

How do you know when a scene is comical? The music! It is goofy. It is silly. You know that you are supposed to laugh and not take the scene seriously, because of the music.

There is no such thing as neutral music. All music has an effect upon the

listener — without a word even being spoken.  That is why God stated that all music

which Christians listen to must have a melody to it — something with harmony,

organized tones, and a sweet and agreeable sound. Very little of today’s

contemporary Christian music can pass this test.

— II. The Control of Music.

C. It should be pure.

    1. Ephesians 5:19 closes by saying, “singing and making melody in your __________ to the Lord.”

    2. Amos 6:1 warns, “Woe to them that are at ________ in Zion.”

    3. The following verses of that same chapter describe their condition, and verse 5 says, “That __________ to the sound of the viol, and invent to themselves instruments of music, like David.”

These people were coming up with new words and types

of music, and new instruments to play it. They were

chanting  like today’s rap music, and God did not like it.

Note: David had also come up with new music, but it was approved of God — unlike the music of these people. There was something different about their words that God did not like. There was something different about their beat that God did not like. There was something different about their instruments that God did not like. Their music was not pleasing at all to God, like David’s was. II Samuel 23:1 says that David was “the __________ psalmist of Israel.”

Illustration: Please read Exodus 32:1-26. The story is a sad one.  After just forty days without a godly leader, the children of Israel corrupted themselves.

    a. Joshua thought there was “a noise of ______ in the camp.” (vs.17)

    b. Moses discerned that it was “the noise of them that ________ do I hear.” (vs.18)

    c. When Moses and Joshua got close enough to see what was actually going on, they “saw the calf, and the ______________.” (vs.19)

    d. Another thing that they noticed was that “the people were __________.” (vs.25)

The first thing that Moses and Joshua noticed was the

NOISE. Joshua thought it was the noise  of WAR, and

Moses thought it was the noise  of people SINGING. Does

that tell you anything about how  they were singing?

Stand a little way off from today’s contemporary Christian  groups

performing, and see if that is not the same thing that

you notice first — the NOISE.

The sound is cranked way up to a deafening roar. The musicians hold the microphones tight to their lips (Note: A true base does not have to swallow the microphone to reach a low note — he breathes deeply, and a full, rich, loud tone emerges. The same with a true tenor, and a true soprano — they breathe deeply, and a full, clear, high note emerges without the puny, weak sound of a fake. Many of today’s Christian singers would be total flops without their amplifiers cranked up to amplify their untrained, undisciplined voices.) With today’s contemporary music, you often cannot even understand the words until you hear the song several times — which means that all you are hearing is noise. That tells you it is not of God, because:

#1 – “For God is not the author of __________________, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.” (I Corinthians 14:33)

#2 – “Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he __________________________ not what thou sayest?” (I Corinthians 14:16)

Illustration: When this booklet was first written, Russia had been open to the gospel for 2-3 years. After only about a year of Christian groups going in there from America, they asked churches to quit sending their rock music over there. Does that tell you anything about the spiritual condition of many churches in America? Those Russian Christians had been persecuted much for their faith. To be a Christian in Russia, many times meant the loss of an opportunity for a good job or promotion. It meant a life of sacrifice. But what about in America? Christian Rock musicians are almost as popular today as the world’s rock stars. It does not mean persecution for them, but big money.

Christian rock  groups normally charge people an

admission fee to listen to them. How can you call some-

thing a ministry, when you charge people for it?

God was very angry in the days of Malachi, when people were claiming to minister in the name of the Lord, but were doing it for money. Malachi 1:10 says, “Who is there even among you that would shut the doors for ____________? neither do ye kindle fire on mine altar for ____________. I have no pleasure in you, saith the Lord of hosts, neither will I accept an offering at your hand.”

We now go back to Exodus 32:1-26 again, and pick up at verse 19.

The first thing that Moses and Joshua heard was

NOISE — the first thing that they saw was DANCING.

There is just something about the wrong type

of music that gets you in the flesh.

The people could not sit still, but felt the urge to get up and dance. Is that a sign of spiritual music? Galatians 5:16 says, “This I say then, Walk in the ____________, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.”

You can give music any name that you want (Contemporary Christian,

Southern Gospel, Praise, Negro Spiritual, Choruses, etc.),

but the TRUE TEST as to whether your music is spiritual  or carnal

will be seen BY THE CROWD’S REACTION TO IT.   If they just cannot seem to

sit still, but have to move — your music is carnal, it is stirring up the flesh.

Illustration: A group of young people was observed from the rear of a church auditorium by a pastor. It was a youth gathering, and they were being encouraged to take part in an international competition which was coming up for Christian young people, to be held at Niagara Falls. Short excerpts of different nationalities of youth groups were played over the speaker system. All of the nations were singing hymns, except the excerpt from the American group. It had the contemporary Christian rock beat to it, and the pastor immediately noticed that the crowd of young people began to sway to the music. They had not swayed to any of the hymns sung, but they immediately did when the contemporary music was played. Was that music spiritual, or was it of the flesh? Not hard to answer that one, is it? What about your music?

In many Bible colleges and mission board candidate schools,

missionaries are being taught “Do not go and Americanize

the people on your field!” What do they mean by that?

They are normally referring to two areas: MUSIC and DRESS.

9 times out of 10, who you are listening to is a liberal wolf in sheep’s

clothing. Why do we have to send missionaries to other countries?

Because they do not have the gospel, and therefore their culture

is wicked and ungodly. If people there are prone to sway  and dance

to their music (or to dress immodestly), it is NOT AMERICANIZING THEM

to teach them that their music and dress is wrong. It is not a nationality issue

— it is a spiritual issue. When a person gets saved, he must be willing to forsake

all — even his culture, when it is against the Bible. Do not associate with the crowd

that is worried about being politically correct — just worry about pleasing God.

Note: Have you ever attended a concert where the people could not seem to sit still? They just had to get up and holler, or scream, or jump around, or dance? That is not spiritual music, that is fleshly music. Romans 8:13 says, “For if ye live after the __________, ye shall die.” Ephesians 5:19 says that spirit-filled singing should be “making melody in your __________ to the Lord.” Spiritual music is geared at the heart — not at the flesh. If your music is not ministering to the heart, then it is gratifying the flesh.

Notice the end result of that music in Exodus 32:25. “Moses saw that the people were __________.” No music is neutral. If it does not minister to your heart and spirit, then it ministers to your flesh — which leads to immorality.

This brings up another classification of music that is

considered harmless by most (because it does not have

a rock beat  to it), classical music. Some will argue that

classical music is the same as hymns, but that is not

always the case. The majority of classical music

was not written as hymns.

Just because music does not have a rock beat to it, does not mean that it is inherently good music. It could be evil, but in a different way. Hymns are songs that are set apart to glorify God, whereas classical music is mostly music that was written for plays, ballets (a fancy word for dance music), and other worldly performances (which were often immoral in nature). Remember, no music is neutral.

One finds it very interesting to do a study of the lives of

the famous classical composers. Notice very carefully

what Matthew 12:34 says, “O generation of vipers, how

can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the

abundance of the __________ the mouth speaketh.” Even so,

a wicked, immoral composer is not going to produce

good music, but evil music out of his evil heart.

Just from one source alone, the following can be seen about the lives of famous classical composers.

Beethoven was a sullen and suspicious man. He had immoral affairs with women, but did not want to marry, so he always fell in love with women who could in no way marry him. That meant women who were already married, or who were high above him in social rank. Contemporary accounts say that on his death bed he raised up to shake his fist defiantly at a clap of thunder — which was interpreted as defiance against the elements, and against God Himself. A true interpretation of his music is thought to be a representation of “a strong-minded, even arrogant, reflection of a phenomenal musical intellect who was driven by illness and mental suffering to retreat completely into his own world.” What kind of music would come from his heart?

Tchaikovsky was a sodomite. There is said to be two types of sodomites — one that just plain hates women, and the other that loves women so much, he wants to be one himself. It is said that Tchaikovsky was in the latter group, which “helps explain the feeling of identification conveyed by the long-arched, proud, and sensuous melodies.” “Tchaikovsky and the ballerina were one. The world of the ballet — the romantic, fairy-tale world …its glamour …its supple rhythms — this world comes up again and again in Tchaikovsky’s music.” He was a nervous man, because he was afraid his sodomy would become open knowledge. Once again, the biographer notes, “The music reflected the man.” If even the world recognizes that, why can Christians not see the evil in his music?

Verdi, Saint-Saëns, Debussy, Brahms, Wagner, Schubert,Berlioz, and Chopin were all believed to be freethinkers or downright ATHEISTS. What music would their hearts produce?

Handel was attracted more to the theater, than to church music. Compare that to buying a record of Elvis Presley singing gospel songs. Gospel songs were certainly not Elvis’ true love, either!

Haydn, Gottschalk, Scriabin, Debussy, Strauss, Puccini, Glinka, Charpentier, Gounod, Brahms, Wagner, Verdi, Rossini, Liszt, Chopin, Berlioz, Weber, Schubert, Gorky, Purcell, Stravinsky, Poulenc, and others were said to have had immoral affairs. Can you honestly say that their music helps you relax? Relax into what — the arms of immorality?

Tchaikovsky, Berg, Shostakovich, Zerev, Ravel, and others were either confirmed or accused sodomites.

Scriabin, Rachmaninoff, Ravel, Mahler, Tchaikovsky, Chabrier, Wolf, Schumann, and others had mental troubles. Many were heavy drinkers, smokers, and some even used drugs. A great number had long hair. (The Lives of the Great Composers, by Harold C. Schonberg, @ 1970, Norton)

All of the above is cited by Mr. Schonberg, an author who appears to be a fan of classical music, not a foe, lest a person think that such an one tried to make the famous composers look bad. It can only be imagined how much worse the picture would become upon an even closer examination of the composer’s lives.

Upon reading such a book, the Christian will discover that

the world of classical composers is as wicked, vile,

ungodly, and immoral, as Hollywood is in this day.

Many Christians have gotten tired of the vileness of television, but they have now replaced it with constant music — music written and produced by the same type of vile people. We go back to the beginning – MUSIC IS NEVER NEUTRAL. It either appeals to the spirit, or else it appeals to the flesh. Why is it, that classical music lends itself so well to sodomy and immorality?

In the same book noted above, Janacek describes where he got his music: “I listen to the birds singing. I marvel at the manifestation of rhythm in its million different forms in the world of light, color and shapes, and my music remains young through contact with the eternally young rhythm of Nature.”

Note: Please read Romans 1:21-32 very carefully, and answer the following questions.

    a. They changed the glory of God “into an image made like to corruptible man, and to __________, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.” (vs.23)

    b. Because of that, God gave them up “to __________________ their own bodies between themselves.” (vs.24)

    c. They began to worship and serve “the ________________ more than the Creator.” (vs.25)

    d. Because of this, “God gave them up unto ________ affections.” (vs.26)

    e. It started with the women (vs.26), and then it spread to the men (vs.27) as they “burned in their lust one toward another; men with ______ working that which is unseemly.”

    f. God then gave them over to a “__________________ mind, to do those things which are not convenient.” (vs.28)

Are you beginning to see the picture? Janacek was not

finding his music from the God of nature, but from nature

his god. And what happens when people glorify nature

above   God, or nature as  their god? It results in sodomy.

Have you ever noticed how feminine-acting musicians and D.J.’s are that are deeply into classical music? It comes from the music they play. What Christian would ever think of playing Michael Jackson’s music (a rock star accused of sodomy, and who sings like a woman)? If you would not play his music, then why would you think nothing of playing a sodomite’s music from a previous generation?

Once again, the relaxation of classical music is not a spiritual relaxation. Ezekiel 16:49 says the problem of Sodom was “pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of ________________.” Isn’t it rather ridiculous that a Christian would even think that the world’s music could relax him/her better than God’s music? After all, can the world give true peace to a person? How does a person get true peace, and thus able to truly relax?

    a. Isaiah 26:3 says, “Thou wilt keep him in ______________ peace, whose ________ is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.” (Perfect peace does not come from a mind stayed on nature, but from a mind stayed upon God.)

    b. I Peter 5:7 says, “Casting all your ________ upon him; for he careth for you.” (The sounds of nature cannot take away your cares, only God can.)

    c. Philippians 4:6,7 says, “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by ____________ and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto ______. And the __________ of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

It is not the peace of nature’s sounds  that you really need

in your life. Nature cannot give you peace — you need the

peace of God.  That is the peace which will set your heart

and mind at ease. It is utterly absurd for a Christian to think

that classical music can help him relax better than hymns.

Hymns will give more peace than classical music, because

they put a person’s mind upon God — the Giver of Peace.

    d. John 14:27 says, “__________ I leave with you, my __________ I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”

    e. John 16:33 also says, “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have __________. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.”

Note: Any of the world’s music is going to have a negative impact upon your life in one way or another, whether you realize it or not. I John 2:15 says, “Love not the __________, neither the ____________ that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.”

Chapter 3

III. The Context of Music.

A. The appearance of the musicians/composers.

    1. I Thessalonians 5:22 says, “Abstain from all ___________________ of evil.”

    2. According to I Corinthians 11:14, nature itself teaches a man that if he has long hair, “it is a __________ unto him.”

Note: The context of music (the surroundings) will tell you a lot about the content of it. Just a glance at the CD or cassette cover will often tell you what the music will be, by the appearance/stance of the musicians.

Why would you listen to a piece of music that was

composed/played by long-haired men? I Corinthians

11:14 is very clear that such men are living in open sin

and shame, “Doth not even nature itself teach you, that,

if a man have long hair, it is a __________ unto him?” How

can you be helped spiritually  by his music, when he is

defying God’s Word with his very appearance? He is

not a spiritual man, but a carnal man.

For a clear definition of what long hair is, please see the previous Bible Course on the Christian’s Appearance. A good share of classical composers also had long hair. Would you play a song that Michael Jackson had composed? Why not? Because his outward rebellion and repulsiveness, is caused from an inward rebellion against God.

Have you ever thought about those contemporary Christian groups which are so popular today? Look at their faces. Many of them do not smile — they frown. Many of them try to look tough. Many of them have weird, devilish looks on their faces. Most do not have a glowing face with the glory of God upon their brow, but have chosen to pattern their album covers after the way that the world does it (with the weird, devilish looks). Nehemiah 8:10 says, “The ______ of the Lord is your strength.”

    3. According to Matthew 5:28, if anyone looks upon a woman to lust after her, he has “committed ______________ with her already in his heart.”

    4. In Proverbs 7:10, a young man was met by a woman “with the ____________ of an harlot.”

Note: On many Christian female vocalists’ CD/cassette covers, they appear immodest in dress/stance. It is all geared to stir the flesh of male listeners to buy their music. They are carnal and sensual in their appearance, and it is going to be evident in their music.

III.   The Context of Music.

A. The appearance of the musicians/composers.

B. The audience of the musicians/composers.

    1. Proverbs 13:20 says, “He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of __________ shall be destroyed.”

    2. According to Psalm 1:1, a person will be blessed if he does not walk “in the counsel of the ______________,” and if he does not stand “in the way of ______________,” and if he does not sit “in the seat of the ________________.”

    3. Ephesians 5:11 says to “have no ________________ with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.”

    4. We are told in John 3:19 that “men loved ________________ rather than light, because their deeds were evil.”

It is common today for singing groups to turn down

the LIGHTS; to turn up  the SOUND; and to add some

flashing strobe lights. The darkness; the beat; the

flashing lights; and the screaming of the fans works up

people into the heat of their emotions. It is no different

than any rock concert that the world would host. It all

stirs up the flesh to an emotional frenzy and immoral

feelings. If you are present in that group, you are

placing yourself in that same temptation.

I Corinthians 10:12 says, “Wherefore let him that

thinketh he standeth take heed lest he ________.”

III.   The Context of Music.

A. The appearance of the musicians/composers.

B. The audience of the musicians/composers.

C. The association of the music.

    1. I Corinthians 15:33 says, “Be not deceived: evil ___________________________ corrupt good manners.”

    2. After Abram had gone and rescued Lot, the king of Sodom made a very nice offer to Abram:

        a. Genesis 14:21-24 records that the king of Sodom offered: “Give me the persons, and take the __________ to thyself.” (vs.21)

        b. But Abram replied in verse 23, “I will not take from a ____________ even to a ______________________, and that I will not take any thing that is thine, lest thou shouldest say, I have made Abram rich.”

Note: Abram did not want any association with the king of Sodom at all. The king of Sodom was wicked, and Abram did not want any one to think that he was involved or helped in any way from such vileness and wickedness of the Sodomites.

Now how about YOU and YOUR MUSIC? If you listen to contemporary Christian music, then people are going to associate you with rock & roll music. If you listen to Country/Western Gospel, then people are going to associate you with the ungodly country/western crowd, because that is how you sound.

Illustration: Please think about that for a moment. A person has gotten saved, and has been delivered from a life of alcohol and rock music. You offer to take him to church with you, and you turn on your radio to the local Christian station. He is immediately bombarded with THE SAME SOUND that accompanied him in his life of sin. But you say, “O, the music does not matter. It is the words that are important.” In that new Christian’s mind, that music you are listening to is pulling on his flesh to go back into sin.

Then you sit in church and hear a lady sing a special number with a country/western background tape. The new Christian sits there and fights with his feelings. He is not thinking of the words being sung — THAT SAME SOUND is bringing him back to the bar where he sat drinking his beer, and watching the people dance. A fierce battle of the flesh is taking place in his mind. He wants to put that old life behind, but he has a hard time doing it, because the church today has so much of the world in it.

Christians and churches seem to forget that music is

always associated  with something — either with God — or

with the world. Christians say, “We use the world’s sound

to draw them in to hear the gospel.” Is it any wonder, then,

that the church has become so worldly?  Is it any wonder that

we see so many professions of faith, but so few changed lives?

A sinner who truly repents of his sin is going to be LOOKING FOR

SOMETHING DIFFERENT. A sinner who really wants to get right with

God is going to be LOOKING FOR MUSIC DIFFERENT THAN HIS OWN.

The people who have the idea of hanging on to all their sin are

not ready to get saved at all. That is why the church today is so full

of pretenders. What we need is some old-fashioned repentance,

where people forsake their sin — not drag it into the church with them.

Why do many new Christians lose their fire and zeal for the Lord after about a year or less? It is the fault of worldly, compromising Christians (or pretenders) who love the world more than they love God.

        a. The Bible says in I John 2:15, “Love not the __________, neither the ____________ that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.”

        b. II Corinthians 5:17 says, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a ______ creature: old ____________ are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”

Illustration: Does it not seem strange that there are so many professing believers still playing their old worldly music? They got saved, but they still have the same old sound? They got saved, but they still play the same old beat? What is new in their lives? The Bible says that all things are to become new.

Some professing believers say, “I was raised on rock music, and I just like the sound.” Others say, “I was raised on country/western music, and I just like that sound.” Others say, “I was raised on classical music, and I just like the sound.” Others say, “I was raised on the blues, or jazz, or pop, or rap, etc., and I like the sound.”

Where did those sounds originate? Did the church start

rock music?  NO. Did the church start country/western

music?   NO. Did the church start classical music?  NO.

Did the church start the blues, or jazz, or pop, or rap, etc.? NO.

It was the WORLD that started those sounds. If you still love

those sounds, it is because you still love the world.

Note: If you still love those sounds because you were raised listening to them, then what are you going to say to the new Christian who was raised in a home where the parents smoked? Is it all right for him to smoke because he was raised that way? What if he has acquired a liking for the smell of that smoke? Is he excused because he was raised that way? No, old things are to pass away, and all things are to become new in his life.

If you love those old worldly sounds because you were raised listening to them, what are you going to say to the new Christian who was raised in a home where they drank liquor? Is it all right now for him to drink because he has acquired a taste for liquor at home? Is he excused because he was raised that way? No.

Are you excused from liking psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs because you were raised listening to something else? NO.

One thing quickly becomes clear — IT DOES NOT

MATTER HOW YOU WERE RAISED — YOU ARE NOW

RESPONSIBLE TO LIVE A NEW LIFE IN CHRIST. Your

real problem is not how you were raised, but whether

you are now truly willing to repent of your sin. If God

can take away a new Christian’s old desires to drink

and smoke (and He does it miraculously all of the time),

then He can also take away your desires for that old worldly

music. It all depends upon you confessing that you have

sinned in this area, and that you are willing to repent.

How The Bible Says You Can Be Saved

1. Do you realize that you have sinned? (Rom. 3:23) (I John 1:8)

2. Do you realize the penalty for your sin? (Rom. 6:23)

3. Do you realize that if you die in your sin, you will go to hell?  (Psa. 9:17) (Prov. 15:24) (Luke 12:4,5)

4. Do you realize that the Lord Jesus Christ paid that death penalty for you? (Rom. 5:8) (I Pet. 3:18) (I Pet. 2:24)

5. Do you realize that it is only through the shed blood of the Lord Jesus Christ that you can be saved, and not through any good works of your own? (I John 1:7) (I Pet. 1:18,19) (Eph. 2:8,9) (Titus 3:5-7)

6. Do you realize that after Jesus died for your sins, He arose victorious from the grave the third day, proving that His sacrifice was sufficient to pay for all of the sins of the whole world? (I Cor. 15:1-4)

7. Do you realize that to be saved you must repent (you must have the desire to turn from your sin and false beliefs, and for the Lord Jesus Christ to cleanse you from all your sin)? (Luke 13:3) (Acts 3:19) (Acts 26:20)

8. Do you realize that after you get saved, God’s first command for you is for you to get baptized and then to live for Him?  (Acts 2:41) (II Cor. 5:17)

9. Are you ready to now pray and ask the Lord Jesus Christ to forgive you of all your sins, and to save you? (John 1:12) (Rom. 10:13) (I John 5:13)

* If you are, then bow your head right now and confess to God that you are a sinner deserving judgment. Ask the Lord Jesus Christ to forgive you of all your sins, and to save you. Ask Him to cleanse your life, and to give you the power to live for Him. Ask Him to lead you to a good, Bible-preaching church, where you can follow the first command after salvation — that of getting baptized and publicly confessing your faith in Him. Ask Him to help you find some good Christian friends to encourage you in the faith and to help you grow.

q — I have just asked the Lord Jesus Christ to save me.
