Description
This course deals with the doctrine of salvation held to by the majority of Charismatics: one which emphasizes the works that a person does for Jesus, instead of the finished work that Jesus did for us on the cross. Matthew 7:21-23 is a striking prophecy showing the Charismatic emphasis, and their shocking condemnation by the Lord Jesus Christ one day. This course also deals with the Charismatic treatment and doctrine of the Holy Spirit, and their behavior of being drunk in the Spirit and slain in the Spirit. Are these actions holy and godly, or are they demonic? This course will show you the answers from the Bible.
Bible Study Course
The Charismatic Movement
Part 1
Welcome to the Liberty Bible Course dealing with the Charismatic Movement. Is it an end-time outpouring of blessing? Or is it an end-time deception? In the following pages, you will clearly see the answer to that question from the Bible. This study is written to be used with the KING JAMES VERSION of the Bible, otherwise your answers are going to be wrong. Please get your Bible, and begin another exciting study in God’s Word, that just might change your life!
Chapter 1
I. Is The Charismatic Doctrine Of Salvation Correct?
Note: The FIRST DOCTRINE to always check out in regard to any religious group, is the DOCTRINE OF SALVATION. If a religious group is in error on the matter of salvation, then they are not going to understand other doctrines of the Bible correctly, either. The doctrine of salvation is the KEY DOCTRINE, as the verse below explains.
1. I Corinthians 2:14 says, “But the ______________ man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he _______ them, because they are ______________________ discerned.”
Note: The “natural” man is referring to an “unsaved” man. He does not understand spiritual matters, because he is still in his “natural” or “lost” condition.
2. Jude 3 says, “Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common __________________, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should __________________ contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.”
We are told to “earnestly contend” for the matter of
salvation. EVERY POINT of the doctrine of salvation
is important. We are living in a day when many are
telling the crowds to “drop doctrinal differences.”
That is the EXACT OPPOSITE of what the Bible
teaches. We must teach and defend exactly what
the Bible teaches about salvation. It is the
difference between heaven and hell.
Note: As with studying any religious group and its beliefs, you are going to find differences of beliefs in the individuals who are a part of that group. So when studying a group which has no official governing body, you must take the statements and beliefs of those who are in high leadership positions within that movement, as the official beliefs of that movement. They are the ones leading the group, and so it is going to be their doctrines that form the foundation for that group and its future direction.
A. Salvation does NOT depend upon our works for God, but upon Jesus’ finished work on the cross for us.
1. Matthew 7:22 says, “Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not ____________________ in thy name? and in thy name have cast out ____________? and in thy name done many wonderful __________?”
In the verses above, we see the
EXACT THREEFOLD EMPHASIS
of the Charismatic Movement:
#1 — Prophesying in Jesus’ name.
#2 — Casting out devils in Jesus’ name.
#3 — Doing wonderful works (miracles) in Jesus’ name.
2. Please notice in the next verse, verse 23, what the Lord says to those people, “And then will I profess unto them, I __________ knew you: ____________ from me, ye that work ________________.”
Note: It is very clear that those people were never saved.
The Lord does NOT say to them, “I now refuse to
acknowledge you as my children anymore.
What He says is, “I NEVER knew you.”
There never was a time when the Lord knew
them as His children. There never was a time
when they were saved.
Note: This may seem incredible to some, that these people are not saved, even though they seem to do such great religious works.
First, they will have prophesied in Jesus’ name. Can someone speak forth God’s Word, and not even be saved himself? Can someone claim to be receiving a Word from God, and not even be saved herself? Can someone go all around talking about Jesus, and not even truly be saved? According to the above verses, the answer to all of these questions is, “Yes, it is possible to do all of those things in Jesus’ name, and not truly be saved.”
“Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord,
have we not PROPHESIED in thy name?
…And then will I profess unto them, I NEVER KNEW YOU:
depart from me, ye that work iniquity.”
Second, they will have cast out devils in Jesus’ name. Can a person claim to have cast out a devil, and not even truly be saved himself? Can a person who claims to have a ministry of casting out demons, not even actually be saved herself? According to the above verses, the answer to all of these questions is, “Yes, it is possible to do all of those things, and not truly be saved.”
“And in thy name have CAST OUT DEVILS?
…And then will I profess unto them, I NEVER KNEW YOU:
depart from me, ye that work iniquity.”
Third, they will claim to have done many wonderful works in Jesus’ name. Can a person claim to do a miracle, but actually not even really be saved himself? Can a person that appears to have a ministry of doing miracles in Jesus’ name, not even really be saved herself? According to the above verses, the answer to all of these questions is, “Yes, it is possible to do all of those things, and not truly be saved.”
“And in thy name done many WONDERFUL WORKS?
…And then will I profess unto them, I NEVER KNEW YOU:
depart from me, ye that work iniquity.”
Note: Please be careful to note that these three things are the EXACT and MAJOR emphasis of the Charismatic Movement today.
“Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity” (Matthew 7:22,23).
These verses make it very clear that people are going to stand before God
PLEADING TO GET INTO HEAVEN, CITING THESE VERY THREE THINGS
AS PROOF OF THEIR SALVATION — but God is going to tell them to
DEPART FROM HIM, and they are going to be cast into hell.
3. Please notice the AMOUNT of people in verse 22 who are going to stand before God and make this same plea, “________ will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not…”
We are not talking about a FEW people here,
but MANY. Many people are going to stand
before God one day, and plead that they should be
allowed into heaven, based upon the things that they
have done for God. But they are going to be
told by Jesus, “I never knew you:
depart from me, ye that work iniquity” (verse 23).
Note: What is their problem? What has happened to these people? How can so many people seemingly be so religious, but not really even be saved?
4. The answer to the above question is found in Titus 3:4-7, “But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, Not by __________ of __________________________ which ____ have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our ______________; That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.”
The problem with these people is that they stand
before God maintaining that they are worthy to enter
into heaven BASED UPON THEIR OWN GOOD WORKS
— not based upon Jesus’ finished work on the cross.
Note: Notice carefully the contents of their plea to enter into heaven. “Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?”
Their plea is, “Have WE not… prophesied in thy name?” “Have WE not… cast out devils?” “Have WE not… done many wonderful works?”
They do not stand there humbly pleading the blood of
the Lord Jesus Christ shed for their sins, as their only
merit to enter into heaven. They stand there making a
PLEA BASED UPON THEIR OWN RELIGIOUS WORKS.
5. Ephesians 2:8,9 says, “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that ______ of ____________________: it is the gift of God: ______ of __________, lest any man should boast.”
6. Ephesians 1:7 says, “In whom we have redemption through his __________, the ____________________ of sins, according to the riches of his grace.”
Note: The sad truth is that many religious people are depending upon their own display of religious deeds to gain them entrance into heaven one day. But when a person is depending upon his or her own good works to enter into heaven, the Bible does not call them “good works.” Look at the next verse to see what they are called.
7. Matthew 7:22,23 says, “Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work ________________.”
When a person is looking to his own good works
as his merit of entering into heaven,
those works are called “INIQUITY.”
Note: The word “iniquity” is defined as “wickedness, an act of sin” (Merriam Webster’s Seventh New Collegiate Dictionary).
8. Isaiah 64:6 tells us, “But we are all as an unclean thing, and all ______ ______________________________ are as ____________ rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.”
9. Mark 10:18 says, “And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is ________ good but ______, that is, ______.”
Question: In what are you trusting? Is your trust in the Lord Jesus Christ, and IN HIM ALONE for your salvation? Or do you base your salvation upon your own religious deeds?
If someone were to ask, “If you were to die today,
are you 100% sure that you would go to heaven?”
What would you answer?
Would you say, “Yes, I am sure that I am going
to heaven, because I have spoken in tongues”?
Would you say,
“Yes, I would go to heaven, because I have been
filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied”?
Would you say, “Why, yes, I would go to heaven,
because I have done miracles”?
Would you say, “Yes, I would go to heaven,
because I have been baptized”?
Would you say, “Yes, I would go to heaven,
because I have joined the church”?
Would you say, “Yes, I would go to heaven,
because I am a deacon”?
Would you say, “Yes, I would go to heaven,
because I have taught Sunday School for years”?
Note: Think about it seriously. What comes to your mind FIRST, when you think about whether you are going to heaven, or not?
Does something come to your mind WHICH YOU HAVE DONE FOR GOD? Or does something come to your mind WHICH GOD HAS DONE FOR YOU?
The difference between those two is the difference between eternity in heaven — or eternity in hell.
If you go to heaven when you die, it will not be because
of anything which you have done for God. It will be
because of what God has done for you through His Son,
the Lord Jesus Christ, when He died on the cross,
and because you placed your faith in Him,
and IN HIM ALONE to save you.
10. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world, that he ________ his only begotten Son, that whosoever __________________ in him should not perish, but have ______________________ life.”
11. Romans 10:9,10 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt ______________ in thine __________ that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”
12. Luke 13:3 says, “I tell you, Nay: but, except ye ___________, ye shall all likewise perish.”
Note: Repentance is NOT you cleaning up yourself. It is the heart desire for GOD TO CLEANSE YOU AND CHANGE YOUR LIFE.
13. John 1:12 says, “But as many as ________________ him, to them gave he __________ to become the sons of God, even to them that ______________ on his name.”
A. Salvation does NOT depend upon our works for God, but upon Jesus’ finshed work on the cross for us.
B. Salvation can NEVER be lost, even when we sin, because our salvation depends upon Jesus’ righteousness, not our own.
1. I John 2:1 makes it very clear that God does NOT want us to sin. “My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye ______ ______.”
2. So what happens when we do sin? I John 2:1,2 tells us, “And if any ______ sin, we have an ________________ with the Father, __________ ____________ the __________________: And he is the ________________________ for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.”
It is God’s will that we NOT sin. When we do sin,
we do not lose our salvation, because our salvation
is not based upon our works. Our salvation is
based upon Jesus’ righteousness. Jesus is our
Advocate (the one who pleads on our behalf).
Jesus is our propitiation (the satisfaction) for our sins.
3. II Corinthians 5:21 says, “For he hath made ______ to be ______ for ____, who knew no sin; that we might be made the __________________________ of ______ in him.”
Our salvation cannot be lost, because it depends upon
the righteousness of Jesus Christ — not ours.
Jesus Christ never changes. He has never sinned,
and never will sin. Thus, our salvation is secure.
4. Hebrews 13:8 says, “__________ ____________ the ________ yesterday, and to day, and for ________.”
5. Hebrews 7:25 tells us, “Wherefore he is able also to ________ them to the __________________ that come unto God by him, seeing he ever ____________ to make intercession for them.”
When someone says that he can lose his salvation,
then his problem is that HE IS NOT FULLY TRUSTING
IN THE LORD JESUS CHRIST, BUT IS ACTUALLY
TRUSTING IN HIS OWN WORKS to keep him saved.
6. Galatians 3:2,3 says, “This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the ______, or by the hearing of __________? Are ye so foolish? having begun in the ____________, are ye now made perfect by the __________?”
Note: While some Charismatics do believe in the eternal security and salvation of the believer, the overwhelming majority of them do not. That means that the majority of them are trusting in their own religious works to be saved or to keep saved.
Remember Matthew 7:22,23 so clearly gives the exact three things that the Charismatics emphasize? “Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not PROPHESIED in thy name? and in thy name have CAST OUT DEVILS? and in thy name DONE MANY WONDERFUL WORKS? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.”
This clearly shows us that many Charismatics are not trusting in the finished work of Jesus Christ to get them into heaven, but are trusting in their own religious works. Sadly, many of them are going to realize that — only too late.
Question: How about you? Is your TOTAL TRUST really in the Lord Jesus Christ? Or is it in the things that you are doing for God?
7. John 6:37 says, “All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that ____________ to me I will in ____ wise ________ out.”
Some foolishly respond to that verse, “I know that He
will not CAST me out, but I can FALL out myself!”
Such a person is testifying right there that his
hope for salvation is RESTING UPON HIMSELF.
He believes that if he is good, then he will end up
going to heaven. And he believes that if he sins,
then he will be lost, and go to hell. By his own
mouth he is confessing that his hope of salvation
rests upon his own works.
8. John 6:39 tells us that no one who is truly saved can “fall out” on his own, because that would mean that Jesus would lose some of His children. “And this is the Father’s will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should ________ ______________, but should raise it up again at the last day.”
Jesus promises that He will NEVER CAST OUT
any of His children, and He also promises that He will
NEVER LOSE any of His children. Our salvation is
truly secure in the Lord Jesus Christ.
9. Hebrews 13:5 says, “Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will __________ leave thee, nor ______________ thee.”
A. Salvation does NOT depend upon our works for God, but upon Jesus’ finshed work on the cross for us.
B. Salvation can NEVER be lost, even when we sin, because our salvation depends upon Jesus’ righteousness, not our own.
C. Salvation is MORE THAN just repeating a name, but is a decision of the heart that is then confessed with the mouth.
1. Romans 10:9-13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy __________ the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine __________ that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be __________. For with the __________ man believeth unto righteousness; and with the __________ confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
Note: Remember Matthew 7:22,23? Those people frequently talk about the Lord.
2. “Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy ________? and in thy ________ have cast out devils? and in thy ________ done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.”
As is seen above, using the Lord’s name often,
even in a good sense, does not make a person saved.
Those people talked about the Lord all of the time,
but they still found themselves cast into hell.
Note: Make sure that you are not just repeating a name with your lips, but that you actually know the Lord Jesus Christ personally as your Savior; by repenting of your sin, and placing your faith totally in Him alone to save you and to keep you saved.
REVIEW:
1. The first doctrine to always check out in regard to any religious group is the doctrine of __________________.
2. Salvation does NOT depend upon ______ works for God, but upon Jesus’ ________________ work on the cross for us.
3. The exact three-fold emphasis of the Charismatic Movement is: #1 — ______________________ in Jesus’ name. #2 — Casting out ____________ in Jesus’ name. #3 — Doing wonderful __________ (miracles) in Jesus’ name.
4. In the next verse, the Lord says to those people, “And then will I profess unto them, I __________ knew you: ____________ from me, ye that work iniquity.”
5. It is very clear that those people were never saved. The Lord does NOT say to them, “I now refuse to acknowledge you as my children anymore.” That is not what the Lord says at all. What He says is, “I __________ knew you.”
6. We are not talking about a “few” people here, but “________.”
7. Repentance is NOT you cleaning up yourself. It is the __________ desire for ______ to cleanse you and change your life.
8. It is God’s will that we NOT sin. When we do sin, we do not lose our salvation because our salvation is not based upon our works. Our salvation is based upon __________ righteousness.
9. John 6:37 says, “All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in ____ wise ________ out.”
10 John 6:39 says, “And this if the Father’s will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should ________ ______________, but should raise it up at the last day.”
11. Salvation is more than just repeating a name. It is a decision of the __________ that is then __________________ with the mouth.
Chapter 2
- Is The Charismatic Treatment Of The Holy Spirit Correct?
- The Charismatics treat the Holy Spirit more like a “force,” than like God Almighty, as the Bible teaches that He is.
Note: The Charismatic Movement tends to minimize the personality of the Holy Spirit, and portrays Him more as a force (notice the testimony by a former charismatic below); whereas the Bible makes it clear that the Holy Spirit is a Person of the Godhead.
- Acts 5:3,4 says, “But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the ________ __________, and to keep back part of the price of the land? Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto ______.”
- Hebrews 9:14 says, “How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the ______________ ____________ offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?”
Note: Alfred H. Pohl tells in his book, “17 Reasons Why I Left The Tongues Movement,” “IN THEORY and in our articles of faith we subscribed to the personality of the Holy Spirit, yet IN PRACTICE we looked upon Him largely as a ‘Power’ or an ‘impersonal force.’ One of the main reasons for this was our emphasis on experience.
The Holy Spirit ‘fulness’ became a desirable experience. We became more occupied with THE GIFT than with THE GIVER. This appears in the oft repeated phrase, ‘Have you got IT?’” (bold letters added for emphasis) (17 Reasons Why I Left The Tongues Movement, by Alfred H. Pohl)
Normally, a church fails in PRACTICE before it fails
in DOCTRINE. If a church continues to disobey
something which the Bible clearly teaches,
then that church will eventually change
its doctrine to match its way of life.
Note: Most leaders in the charismatic movement will still maintain that the Holy Spirit is God, and that the Bible is their final authority (many even claim to hold to the King James Version of the Bible). But those are just EMPTY WORDS. That is what they SAY they believe, but that is not at all what they really PRACTICE. Because when you show them from the Bible where their experiences do not match up with what the Bible teaches, they finally say in frustration, “I don’t know about what that says (the Bible), BUT I KNOW WHAT I HAVE EXPERIENCED!”
- James 1:22 says, “But be ye __________ of the word, and not ______________ only, __________________ your own selves.”
- Notice the downward spiral in Mark 7:7-9, “Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for __________________ the commandments of ______. For laying __________ the commandment of ______, ye ________ the tradition of ______, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do. And he said unto them, Full well ye ____________ the commandment of ______, that ye may ________ your ______ tradition.”
Note: If you place the teaching of man on the same level as the Bible, you will eventually set aside the Bible, and will follow what man says. That is exactly what the Charismatic Movement has done with the matter of man’s experiences.
The final authority in the Charismatic Movement
today is not the Bible, it is their experiences.
Charismatics, when confronted with Bible doctrine
that shows the errors of their movement, will reply,
“I do not know about that (what the Bible teaches),
but I know what I have experienced!”
Note: If you have talked to many Charismatics at all, then you know that the above statement is exactly the response that you get from them. They are testifying right there that their experiences are really their final authority, not the Bible.
If their experiences seem to disagree with the Scripture,
then they stick with their experiences. In their minds
and lives, their experiences are more sure
than anything — even than the Bible.
- The Charismatics treat the Holy Spirit more like a “force,” than like God Almighty, as the Bible teaches that He is.
- The Charismatics teach that the Holy Spirit is received sometime “after” salvation; instead of what the Bible teaches, that the Holy Spirit is received by every Christian at the moment of salvation.
Note: As was mentioned above, one of the charismatic’s first questions to another person is, “Have you got it?” “Have you received the Spirit?” The charismatic doctrine is one which teaches that if people are saved, they do not necessarily have the Holy Spirit. Is that what the Bible teaches?
- Romans 8:9 says, “But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have ______ the ____________ of Christ, he is ________ of his.”
The Bible is very clear that if a person does not have
the Spirit of God, then that person does not belong
to Christ — that person is not saved.
Note: The error of the Charismatics is that they build their doctrine of the Holy Spirit on transitional passages in the Book of Acts. Passages that are describing changes between the Old and New Testaments.
- Luke 16:16 tells us, “The law and the prophets were until ________: since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it.”
Note: In the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit came upon believers — but He did not indwell them.
- I Samuel 16:13,14 show us, “Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the ____________ of the LORD came ________ David from that day ______________. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah. But the ____________ of the LORD ________________ from Saul.”
Note: You will notice that the Holy Spirit came upon believers in the Old Testament, but He did not necessarily stay upon them. In David’s case, He did; but not so with King Saul.
The Book of Acts becomes a transition between the Old and New Testaments, in regard to the ministry of the Holy Spirit.
- In Acts 8:12-17, we see a good illustration of the transition period: “But when they ________________ Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done. Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John: Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might ________________ the _________ __________: (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.) Then ________ they their __________ on them, and they ________________ the Holy Ghost.”
Note: Laying hands on people was not the only way that people received the Holy Spirit in the Book of Acts. Notice the next passage.
- Acts 10:42-48 says, “And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead. To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins. While Peter yet __________ these words, the ________ __________ fell on ______ them which heard the word. And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter, Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have ________________ the ________ __________ as well as we? And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.”
Note: Jesus explained to the disciples what the changes would be in His ministry, and in the ministry of the Holy Spirit.
- John 14:16,17 says, “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may __________ with ______ for ________; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth ________ you, and __________ be ____ you.”
Jesus gave His disciples the clear word that
the Holy Spirit was WITH them, but in the future,
after He left, the Holy Spirit would be IN them.
Note: Jesus also made it very clear in those verses that the Holy Spirit would abide with them forever. He would no longer just come upon them for service, and then possibly leave again; but He would indwell them and never leave them.
When the transition of ministries was completed, the
Holy Spirit would indwell believers at the moment
of salvation, and would never leave them.
- I Corinthians 6:19 says, “What? know ye not that your ________ is the ____________ of the ________ __________ which is ____ you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?”
- I Corninthians 12:13 says, “For by one ____________ are we ______ baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been ______ made to drink into one ____________.”
- The Charismatics teach a doctrine of the Holy Spirit that causes a Christian to “imitate” sin; instead of what the Bible really teaches, that the Holy Spirit leads a Christian to true holiness, and to be “separate” from sin.
- Ephesians 5:17, 18 says, “Wherefore be ye not ____________, but __________________________ what the will of the Lord is. And be not __________ with wine, wherein is excess; but be ____________ with the Spirit.”
The Charismatics are not obeying this Bible principle,
but are openly encouraging the imitation
and appearance of sin.
Note: A father of this movement, Rodney Howard-Browne, calls himself the “Holy Spirit bartender.” One of the current headquarters for this “revival” is the Brownsville Assembly of God, in Pensacola, Florida. John Kilpatrick is the pastor (when this research was done).
“Speaking before a meeting of the Peninsula Florida
District of the Assemblies of God in November 1996,
Kilpatrick testified that he has been so ‘drunk in the spirit’
that he has run his automobile into that of his youth pastor,
and that he has hit many garbage cans which were sitting
on the curb of the road. He said that his wife has been
so drunk (in the spirit) that she couldn’t cook.”
He has been so deep in his drunken stupors that he has had to be taken from the service in a wheel chair.” (The Inkhorn, January 1997). (July 13, 1997 David W. Cloud, Fundamental Baptist Information Service, P.O. Box 610368, Port Huron, MI 48061-0368, fbns@wayoflife.org)
At a Kenneth Hagin Holy Ghost Meeting, it was reported that he “Began to argue that one of the demonstrations of the Spirit is drunkenness.”
“At that point he (Kenneth Hagin) stopped preaching,
and for about 25 minutes he staggered about, laughing,
blowing on people, waving his arms at people,
and otherwise acting drunken. He repeatedly
tried to speak, but was unable to do so.
Large numbers of people in the crowd also began
to laugh loudly and some fell to the floor or staggered
about and acted foolishly like drunks.”
Women fell to the floor in all sorts of compromising positions and had to be covered with the assistance of ladies who are assigned that task.” (October 4, 1998, David W. Cloud, Fundamental Baptist Information Service, P.O. Box 610368, Port Huron, MI 48061-0368, fbns@wayoflife.org)
The Holy Spirit is NOT given to Christians so that
they can imitate the sin of this world. The Holy Spirit
is given to the Christian so that he might have the
power to live differently than this sinful world.
- I Thessalonians 5:22 says, “Abstain from all ____________________ of ________.”
- I Corinthians 6:9,10 tells us, “Know ye not that the unrighteous shall ______ inherit the ______________ of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor __________________, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.”
The Bible clearly says that the drunkard is not going
to heaven, unless he gets saved. How would it then
be of God to imitate a person who is not going
to heaven? How could the Holy Spirit possibly cause
a person to imitate a very unholy thing?
- Proverbs 20:1 says, “Wine is a ____________, strong drink is ____________: and whosoever is deceived thereby is ______ ________.”
Alcoholic drinks mock a person; that is, it makes a fool
out of him/her. Is it the purpose of the Holy Spirit
to make fools out of Christians? Is it His purpose
to mock the children of God?
- John 14:16,17 says, “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another __________________, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the ____________ of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.”
The Holy Spirit is given to believers as a “Comforter.”
Do you feel comforted when you are made to look
like a fool in front of a crowd of people?
No, what you feel is betrayed by such a person.
The Holy Spirit has come to comfort and strengthen us
that we might live holy lives — not to mock us by causing
us to act like sinful fools. The Holy Spirit never
encourages sinful behavior or the imitation of it,
but convicts us of such behavior.
- I Timothy 3:15 says, “But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to ____________ thyself in the __________ of God, which is the ____________ of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.”
- I Corinthians 14:33 says, “For God is ______ the author of __________________, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.”
- Proverbs 24:9 says, “The thought of ______________________ is ______: and the scorner is an abomination to men.”
- It is interesting that in Leviticus 19:30,31 we read, “Ye shall keep my sabbaths, and __________________ my __________________: I am the LORD. Regard ______ them that have familiar ______________, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I am the LORD your God.”
It is interesting to note that God’s people were told to
reverence His sanctuary, and then told not to regard
familiar spirits. In the Charismatic Movement, we are
seeing very irreverent behavior displayed and imitated
in God’s house: drunkenness, foolishness, immodesty,
and confusion. They claim to be doing all of this in the
name of the Holy Spirit. But the Holy Spirit never
produces unholy behavior. There is a spirit involved
in such confusion, but it is NOT the Holy Spirit.
- Some try to find a scriptural basis for such foolishness in Acts 2:13-15, “Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine. But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words: For these are ______ ______________, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day.”
The reason that some were saying the disciples were
drunk, is because they did not understand the languages
that they were speaking. It was THE LANGUAGE FACTOR
ONLY as the basis of the accusation. The disciples were not
swaggering around acting drunk. The disciples were not
blowing upon people and seeing them fall down.
Peter did not think it was funny to be accused of being
drunk. Quite to the contrary, he immediately argued
that they were NOT drunk. That is the exact opposite
reaction compared to Charismatic leaders today.
When they are accused of acting drunk, they really
play it up big, and act even more drunk and foolish.
Note: What kind of a Christian testimony is it to be acting so drunk, that you smash into other Christian’s cars, or into garbage cans up on the sidewalk? Is that a good way to win your local policeman to the Lord? Do you think that is a good way to win your insurance agent to the Lord? If that is an experience highly regarded and sought after by Christians, then pretty soon agents will have to ask if people are Christians when they apply for insurance, because their rates will be much higher than those who are not even saved!
What kind of a Christian testimony is it to be acting so drunk that you cannot even cook? That sounds like a good way to get burnt very seriously, or to burn down the house. Does that sound like a good testimony for Christians to have? If that is the normal way for spiritual Christians to act, then their health and house insurance will also go up higher!
- The Charismatics teach a doctrine of the Holy Spirit that causes a Christian to “imitate” sin; instead of what the Bible really teaches, that the Holy Spirit leads a Christian to true holiness, and to be separate from sin.
- The Charismatics teach a doctrine called “being slain in the Spirit,” that is contrary to what the Bible teaches.
Note: The Charismatic definition of being “slain in the Spirit,” usually refers to “being knocked down” (supposedly, by the Holy Spirit). They testify that this happens to them when someone who is filled with the Holy Spirit, touches them; blows upon them; looks at them; when they hear certain music being played; etc.
The phrase “slain in the Spirit”
NEVER occurs in the Bible.
The word “slain” appears 183 times in 168
verses of the Bible. It refers to animals being slain,
and to people being slain, but it NEVER even comes
close to referring to “being slain in the Spirit.”
Illustration: One woman on the inside of the Charismatic Movement gives firsthand accounts of people laying on the floor for hours, unable to get up; people in dazed, woozy conditions; people with heads shaking and jerking uncontrollably; and “waves of something” hitting them. She described people being “slain in the Spirit” in the hallways, and she mentioned that they began to deeply “wail.” (Brownsville Revival: An Insider’s Report, Excerpts by insider Cathy Wood; Reporting by Dr. Ralph Colas, ACCC, P.O. Box 5455, Bethlehem, PA 18015. Calvary Contender, October 15, 1998).
Note: Is wailing something that people who are filled with the Holy Spirit do? The word “wailing” occurs in only 4 verses in the New Testament.
- Matthew 13:41,42 says, “The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be ______________ and gnashing of teeth.”
- Matthew 13:49,50 says, “So shall it be at the end of the world: the angels shall come forth, and sever the wicked from among the just, And shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be ______________ and gnashing of teeth.”
- Revelation 18:15-19 says, “The merchants of these things, which were made rich by her, shall stand afar off for the fear of her torment, weeping and ______________, And saying, Alas, alas, that great city, that was clothed in fine linen, and purple, and scarlet, and decked with gold, and precious stones, and pearls! For in one hour so great riches is come to nought. And every shipmaster, and all the company in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off, And cried when they saw the smoke of her burning, saying, What city is like unto this great city! And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and ______________, saying, Alas, alas, that great city, wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness! for in one hour is she made desolate.”
In the New Testament, the word “wailing” is only
associated with people who are cast into hell, or with
people who have everything invested in this life, and
have lost it. In neither case, is such a person
filled with the Holy Spirit.
Illustration: The previously mentioned article also describes a person’s first-hand account of being “slain in the Spirit.”
“It was like a bolt of lightning hit me. I hit the wall,
slid down it, and shook and jerked uncontrollably
for I do not know how long. It took my breath
away and I was taking deep gasps over and over
…my head would jerk…”
“I was being filled with a fresh anointing of the Holy Ghost.” (Brownsville Revival: An Insider’s Report, Excerpts by insider Cathy Wood; Report by Dr. Ralph Colas, ACCC, P.O. Box 5455, Bethlehem, PA 18015. Calvary Contender, October 15, 1998).
Note: Another personal account, found at (http://www.tcsn.net/fbchurch/fbcpensa.htm), says,
“Children in the auditorium who usually could not sit
still during the service were hit by the power of God.
‘They’d go out in the spirit,’ he said. ‘Their eyes
rolled back in their head, and they’d not move a muscle
for four hours.’ ‘When they’d get up, they were shaking
and trembling.’ Kilpatrick admitted that ‘there was such
pandemonium going on, that people didn’t even know
where their kids were. They were on the floor, out.
There’s kids, moms and dads, on the floor.”
“‘God sent pandemonium in the church,’ he said.” (http://www.tcsn.net/fbchurch/fbcpensa.htm)
Note: The dictionary defines the word “pandemonium” as “hell; a wild uproar, tumult; the capital of Hell in Milton’s Paradise Lost.” (Merriam Webster’s Seventh New Collegiate Dictionary)
“Wailing” is not one of the fruits of the Holy Spirit.
People who wail are not filled with the Holy Spirit.
They are either not saved, or are out of God’s will.
When pandemonium sets in,
the devil is the author of it — not God.
Look at the word “pandemonium.”
Take the first three, and also the last three
letters off of the word. What is left?
The word “demon.”
- In Matthew 17:14-18, it was a demon or devil that was causing such actions. “And when they were come to the multitude, there came to him a certain man, kneeling down to him, and saying, Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is a ______________, and sore vexed: for ofttimes he ______________ into the fire, and oft into the water. And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him. Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him hither to me. And Jesus rebuked the __________; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour.”
- Mark 9:20-27 reinforces that scene. “And they brought him unto him: and when he saw him, straightway the ____________ tare him; and he ________ on the ground, and wallowed foaming. And he asked his father, How long is it ago since this came unto him? And he said, Of a child. And ofttimes it hath cast him into the fire, and into the waters, to destroy him: but if thou canst do any thing, have compassion on us, and help us. Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth. And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief. When Jesus saw that the people came running together, he rebuked the foul spirit, saying unto him, Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I charge thee, come out of him, and enter no more into him. And the ____________ cried, and rent him sore, and came out of him: and he was as one ________; insomuch that many said, He is dead. But Jesus took him by the hand, and lifted him up; and he arose.”
When the Charismatics touch someone,
that person FALLS DOWN on the floor.
But when Jesus touched people,
they GOT UP, or were healed.
Note: The word touch appears 48 times in the Bible, and the word touched appears 49 times.
- Matthew 17:4-7 says, “Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias. While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him. And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their face, and were sore afraid. And Jesus came and ______________ them, and said, __________, and be not afraid.”
When the disciples were afraid, they fell on their faces.
Did they stay there for hours under the power of God,
pinned to the ground? No. Jesus touched them,
and told them to arise!
- Mark 7:32-35 says, “And they bring unto him one that was deaf, and had an impediment in his speech; and they beseech him to put his hand upon him. And he took him aside from the multitude, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spit, and ______________ his tongue; And looking up to heaven, he sighed, and saith unto him, Ephphatha, that is, Be opened. And straightway his ears were opened, and the string of his tongue was loosed, and he spake __________.”
The Lord touched this man, and caused him to
be able to hear and to SPEAK PLAINLY.
But when the Charismatic preachers claim to
be touched by the power of God, they seem to have
slurred speech, or cannot talk at all for some time.
Their EXPERIENCE is CONTRARY to what we
see in the Bible. Then what is their real authority?
Just what we said in the beginning — when their
experiences do not match up with the Bible,
they still follow their experiences.
Note: The second thing that amazed Kilpatrick was the large quantity of unsaved, rebellious youth attending the church service. He described immorally active, drug addicted, wild, scantily clad teenagers who would fall to the floor, shaking under the “power of the Holy Ghost.” He said he became aware that an individual did not have to be saved in order to be a part of the “manifestations” of the Holy Spirit. He mentioned that many of the people in the audience who were experiencing the supernatural manifestations were not even Christians. (http://www.tcsn.net/fbchurch/fbcpensa.htm)
- John 14:17 says, “Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world ___________ ______________, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.”
The Bible clearly says that the world cannot
receive the Spirit of truth, the Holy Spirit.
But the Charismatic preacher said that he noticed that
“immorally active, drug addicted, wild, scantily clad
teenagers who would fall to the floor, shaking
under the ‘power of the Holy Ghost.’” He thus concluded,
CONTRARY TO WHAT THE BIBLE TEACHES, that “an
individual did not have to be saved in order to be a part
of the ‘manifestations’ of the Holy Spirit.”
What is his true authority, the Bible, or experience?
He has chosen experience as his final authority.
- Micah 2:11 is an interesting verse about “being in the spirit.” “If a man walking in the ____________spirit and __________________ do lie, saying, I will prophesy unto thee of ________ and of ____________ drink; he shall even be the prophet of this people.”
Notice how the people were willing to accept those
who claimed to be “walking in the spirit,” but who really
were walking in falsehood and lies. And, interestingly,
notice the main emphasis of these false prophets: WINE
and STRONG DRINK! Is it really such a coincidence that
the Charismatic Movement imitates drunkenness?
They are modern-day false prophets. They clearly
choose their own experiences over the
plain teaching of God’s Word.
- John 17:17 says, “Sanctify them through thy ___________: thy ________ is truth.”
- Isaiah 8:20 says, “To the law and to the __________________: if they speak not according to this _______, it is because there is ____ __________ in them.”
Note: The Bible is very clear that if someone speaks or teaches contrary to God’s Word, then there is “no light” in that person. That person is not leading you to the truth and to the light, but to error and darkness. We have already seen how the Charismatics repeatedly reject the clear teaching of God’s Word, and follow their own experiences. That tells us that they are leading people to darkness, and not to light.
- II Corinthians 11:13-15 says, “For such are __________ apostles, __________________ workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for __________ himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.”
The common descriptions and accounts of people
being “slain in the Spirit” (wailing, jerking uncontrollably,
unable to speak for hours, pinned to the floor by some
invisible force, walking around acting drunk) is not
showing spiritual people filled with the Holy Spirit,
but carnal people; and, it seems clear in many cases,
people that are under demonic control.
That is the only way that those unsaved young
people could display the same characteristics.
REVIEW:
- The Charismatics treat the Holy Spirit more like a “__________,” than like God Almighty, as the Bible teaches that He is.
- The final authority in the Charismatic Movement today is not the Bible, it is their own ______________________. Charismatics, when confronted with Bible doctrine that shows the errors of their movement, will reply, “I do not know about that (what the Bible teaches), but I know what I have ______________________!”

- Proverbs 24:9 says, “The thought of ______________________ is ______: and the scorner is an abomination to men.”
- It is interesting to note that God’s people were told to __________________ His sanctuary, and then told not to regard familiar spirits. Final Test
Charismatic Movement Book 1

10 John 6:39 says, “And this if the Father’s will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should ________ ______________, but should raise it up at the last day.”

But when the Charismatic preachers claim to be touched by the power of God, they seem to have slurred speech, or cannot talk at all for some time. Their experience is ________________ to what we see in the Bible.
24. Isaiah 8:20 says, “To the law and to the __________________: if they speak not according to this _______, it is because there is ____ __________ in them.”
How The Bible Says You Can Be Saved
1. Do you realize that you have sinned? (Rom. 3:23) (I John 1:8)
2. Do you realize the penalty for your sin? (Rom. 6:23)
3. Do you realize that if you die in your sin, you will go to hell? (Psa. 9:17) (Prov. 15:24) (Luke 12:4,5)
4. Do you realize that the Lord Jesus Christ paid that death penalty for you? (Rom. 5:8) (I Pet. 3:18) (I Pet. 2:24)
5. Do you realize that it is only through the shed blood of the Lord Jesus Christ that you can be saved, and not through any good works of your own? (I John 1:7) (I Pet. 1:18,19) (Eph. 2:8,9) (Titus 3:5-7)
6. Do you realize that after Jesus died for your sins, He arose victorious from the grave the third day, proving that His sacrifice was sufficient to pay for all of the sins of the whole world? (I Cor. 15:1-4)
7. Do you realize that to be saved you must repent (you must have the desire to turn from your sin and false beliefs, and for the Lord Jesus Christ to cleanse you from all your sin)? (Luke 13:3) (Acts 3:19) (Acts 26:20)
8. Do you realize that after you get saved, God’s first command for you is for you to get baptized and then to live for Him? (Acts 2:41) (II Cor. 5:17)
9. Are you ready to now pray and ask the Lord Jesus Christ to forgive you of all your sins, and to save you? (John 1:12) (Rom. 10:13) (I John 5:13)
* If you are, then bow your head right now and confess to God that you are a sinner deserving judgment. Ask the Lord Jesus Christ to forgive you of all your sins, and to save you. Ask Him to cleanse your life, and to give you the power to live for Him. Ask Him to lead you to a good, Bible-preaching church, where you can follow the first command after salvation — that of getting baptized and publicly confessing your faith in Him. Ask Him to help you find some good Christian friends to encourage you in the faith and to help you grow.
q — I have just asked the Lord Jesus Christ to save me.
