This course deals with the Charismatic doctrine of tongues.  It explains why there are different languages in the world; what would happen if the language barrier was removed (and how the Charismatic movement is already evidencing that problem); why God used the gift of tongues in the New Testament; why missionaries today are not being empowered by God to reach foreign-speaking people with the gift of tongues; how the modern Charismatic movement does exactly opposite to what the Bible teaches about tongues in almost every regulation given concerning the gift.

Description

This course deals with the Charismatic doctrine of tongues.  It explains why there are different languages in the world; what would happen if the language barrier was removed (and how the Charismatic movement is already evidencing that problem); why God used the gift of tongues in the New Testament; why missionaries today are not being empowered by God to reach foreign-speaking people with the gift of tongues; how the modern Charismatic movement does exactly opposite to what the Bible teaches about tongues in almost every regulation given concerning the gift.

Bible Study Course

The Charismatic Movement

Part 2

Welcome to the Liberty Bible Course, Charismatic Movement, Part 2. Is the Charismatic Movement an end-time outpouring of blessing, or is it an end-time deception? Part 2 begins with looking at the matter of tongues. This study is written to be used with the KING JAMES VERSION of the Bible, otherwise your answers are going to be incorrect. Please get your Bible, and begin another exciting study in God’s Word that just might change your life!

Note: In Part 1, we covered the following points:

I. Is The Charismatic Doctrine Of Salvation Correct?

No, because the majority of Charismatics believe that salvation can be lost. Their emphasis is really upon the works that a person does for Jesus, not His finished work on the cross. Please read Matthew 7:22, 23 to see the exact emphasis of the Charismatic movement: prophesying in Jesus’ name; casting out devils in Jesus’ name; and doing wonderful works (miracles) in Jesus’ name. When those people stand before Jesus one day, He will say, “I never knew you.”

II. Is The Charismatic Treatment Of The Holy Spirit Correct?

No, because the Holy Spirit is treated more like a force, than a Holy Person of the Trinity. Their behavior of acting drunk in the Spirit and slain in the Spirit, is not holy behavior, but fleshly, evil behavior. The things that they attribute to the Holy Spirit, are actually things that are evidenced by demon-possessed people in the New Testament.

III. Is The Charismatic Doctrine Of Tongues Correct?

Note: Once again, the Scriptures will clearly show that the Charismatic doctrine of tongues is contrary to what the Bible teaches.

Chapter 1

A. The reason for tongues (different languages) in the world.

1. Please read Genesis 11:1-9, and answer the following questions.

a. Verse 1 says, “And the whole earth was of ______ language, and of ______ speech.”

Note: When God first created man and woman, they obviously could communicate with one another; and when God gave them children, those children then learned that same language. Everyone upon earth spoke the same language.

b. Verse 4 says, “And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose ______ may reach unto ____________; and let us make us a ________, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.”

Note: We see that pride was welling up in the hearts of the people. They wanted to do a huge project that could be seen from a great distance, and thus make themselves a name.

c. Verse 6 says, “And the LORD said, Behold, the people is ______, and they have all ______ language; and this they begin to do: and now ______________ will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.”

d. Verse 7 shows us what God decided to do, “Go to, let us go down, and there ________________ their language, that they may ______ understand one another’s speech.”

e. Verses 8 and 9 show us that is exactly what the Lord did, “So the LORD __________________ them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city. Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the ________________ of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.”

The changing of the one language upon earth,

into many, was the result of pride and rebellion

(made easier through the ability of all people to communicate with one another).

Note: This is a very interesting and important point in regard to the Charismatic movement. They claim that language is not a barrier to them any more. They claim that they can speak in other languages that they have not had to learn.

What is so interesting about this comparison, is that it is the

Charismatic movement that is at the forefront now with the cry,

“Break down denominational walls and barriers that separate us! We are all one!”

They claim to have the gift that breaks the language barrier (tongues),

and what do they immediately want? To become ONE with EVERYONE,

despite the obvious differences in beliefs. That is rebellion

against what God has taught in His Word.

Note: Denominational names are much more than names that were picked out of a hat. They are names which stand for doctrinal beliefs. The word doctrine means “teaching.” In the case of true born-again Christians, it means, “Bible teaching.”

To break down denominational barriers

would require that Christians would break down

or count unimportant what the Bible teaches.

2. I Timothy 1:2, 3 says, “Unto Timothy, my own son in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord. As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge some that they __________ no other ________________.”

3. Titus 2:1 says, “But speak thou the things which become __________ doctrine.”

4. II John 9-11 says, “Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the ________________ of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the ________________ of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son. If there come any unto you, and bring not this ________________, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed: For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.”

5. II Timothy 3:16 says, “All __________________ is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for ________________, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.”

6. II Timothy 4:2-4 says, “Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and ________________. For the time will come when they will not endure __________ doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the __________, and shall be turned unto fables.”

Denominational names stand for different doctrinal beliefs.

They either stand for correct Bible interpretation,

or incorrect Bible interpretation.

Correct doctrine is very important to God.

7. II Timothy 2:15 says, “__________ to show thyself ________________ unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, ______________ dividing the word of truth.”

Note: The Charismatics have deceived themselves into thinking that they have broken the language barrier that God designed at the Tower of Babel. And in the process, they (the Charismatics) have shown that nothing has changed since the Tower of Babel — if man could break the language barrier, he would yoke up with everyone once again, and rebel against what God has said. What has not changed is man’s evil heart.

8. Jeremiah 17:9 says, “The __________ is deceitful above all things, and desperately ____________: who can know it?”

9. Matthew 12:34 says, “…out of the abundance of the __________ the __________ speaketh.”

10. I Corinthians 15:33 says, “Be not deceived: ________ communications corrupt ________ manners.”

Note: Evil hearts produce evil mouths, which in turn produce evil communications. Language is a powerful tool for good, but also a powerful tool for evil.

Illustration: That is a very large problem with the jail system of today. Getting that many people together who have committed crimes; coupled with their ability to then communicate with each other for months, and oftentimes for years; thoroughly corrupts the good manners of many. At one time (and it still may be the case), it was found that something like 80% of the people in jail would be back in jail one day for worse crimes than they committed to get in the first time. There are obviously many factors involved, but one of them is clear: spend enough time communicating with evil people, and it is easy to become evil (or more evil) yourself.

Proverbs 13:20 says, “He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a __________________ of fools shall be __________________.”

God never ordained the jail system as we know it today. Please refer to the Bible Course on Hell, #BC-E-104, for the Scriptures showing what God has said to do with people who commit crimes.

Note: So the people upon the earth had to be separated, but why did God not just physically force them apart for a while into different locations? Why make life so difficult? The answer is because if God would have just moved them apart, it would not have been long before they were back together again, and in greater rebellion.

When God confounded the language

of all mankind, He did something that would

basically renew itself every generation.

11. Nehemiah 13:23, 24 shows this fact. “In those days also saw I Jews that had married wives of Ashdod, of Ammon, and of Moab: And their ________________ spake half in the speech of Ashdod, and could ______ speak in the ________ language, but according to the language of each people.”

Note: You can see how powerful, different influences are in that passage; and how in one generation, a language can be lost. When God confounded the languages of the people at Babel, it was not just something that would separate those people in that day, but also the people of the earth until the end of time.

12. But this language barrier also makes it hard to fulfill God’s command to us in Matthew 28:18-20, “And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and __________ all ______________, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”

Note: Children are prone to speak in the language where they live. If missionaries do not speak in English in their homes, then their small children will not know English. If their children do learn English, but God calls them to live a different place when they get married, then the grandchildren of the original missionary will not know the foreign language.

13. Every generation needs those who are sensitive to God’s leading, and will respond to His call, as is seen in Romans 10:13-15, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they ______________ in him of whom they have not __________? and how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be ________? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!”

REVIEW:

1. Genesis 11:1 says, “And the whole earth was of ______ language, and of ______ speech.”

2. Genesis 11:4 says, “And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose ______ may reach unto ____________; and let us make us a ________, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.”

3. Genesis 11:6 says, “And the LORD said, Behold, the people is ______, and they have all ______ language; and this they begin to do: and now ______________ will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.”

4. Genesis 11:7 shows us what God decided to do, “Go to, let us go down, and there ________________ their language, that they may ______ understand one another’s speech.”

5. The Charismatic movement is at the forefront now with the cry, “Break down denominational walls and barriers that separate us! We are all one!” They claim to have the gift that breaks the language barrier (tongues), and what do they immediately want? To become ______ with EVERYONE, despite the obvious differences in beliefs. That is rebellion against what God has taught in His Word.

10. When God confounded the language of all mankind, He did something that would basically renew itself every ____________________.

Chapter 2

B. The reason for the use of tongues in the New Testament.

1. Was to get the gospel to people who spoke many different languages.

a. Please read Acts 2:1-11, and answer the following questions.

1.) Verse 4 says, “And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other ______________, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”

2.) Verse 6 says, “Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man __________ them speak in his own ________________.”

3.) Verse 11 says, “…we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful __________ of God.”

When the gift of tongues was given, it was not a

special gift for the super spiritual  to show off, it was

a practical gift that was used to get the gospel

to people in their own language.

b. Please continue reading in Acts 2, and answer the following questions.

1.) Verse 36 says, “Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same __________, whom ye have __________________, both Lord and Christ.”

2.) Verses 37, 38 say, “Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their __________, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? Then Peter said unto them, ____________, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.”

3.) Verse 41 says, “Then they that gladly ________________ his ________ were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.”

Note: Baptism is not a part of salvation, but is the first command after a person is saved (please see Bible Course BC-E-102). If a person is told that he needs to repent of his sin and follow the Lord in baptism, and that scares him away from receiving the Lord Jesus Christ, then he was not really ready to repent and get saved.

Note: So in the first use of tongues in the New Testament, it was used to get the gospel to a large number of people (who spoke different languages) all at once. And you can see the tremendous harvest of that day.

4.) Verse 41 says, “…there were added unto them about three ________________ souls.”

If the Charismatics have the true New Testament gift of tongues,

then why are they not using it on the foreign mission fields

to get the gospel quickly to people of all languages?

Note: Some sincere, but deceived, Charismatics have gone to the mission field with that very idea, but they have failed. They have not been able to speak in such a way as to get those people to understand. They have had to learn the language like every other missionary. That alone should tell people that the Charismatic movement does not have the true gift of tongues at all.

Take careful note that God did not  reverse the judgment of the Tower of Babel.

God did not suddenly do away with the language barrier.

God did not give these men the natural ability  to communicate

with these 18 different language groups mentioned in Acts chapter 2.

They did not know these languages before, or after this event.

God just miraculously gave such utterance when He so chose.

B. The reason for the use of tongues in the New Testament.

1. Was to get the gospel to people who spoke many different languages.

— A second reason for the use of tongues in the New Testament:

2. Was a necessary sign to get the gospel to God’s chosen people, the Jews, first.

a. Romans 1:16 says, “For I am not ashamed of the ____________ of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew __________, and also to the Greek.”

b. Jesus told His disciples in Matthew 10:5-7, “Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not: But go rather to the ________ sheep of the house of ____________. And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

It was not that God did not want Gentiles to be saved.

God did (and still does) want them to also be saved.

But He wanted His chosen people, the Jews, to hear

the gospel first, and then take it to all other people.

c. Exodus 19:5,6 says, “Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar ________________ unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine: And ye shall be unto me a ______________ of priests, and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.”

Note: God’s desire was not to just have one tribe of Israel to be priests, but the whole nation to be such, and to reach the rest of the world through them. But it was the Jew’s own rebellion that caused the Lord to choose out just one man, and one tribe out of Israel.

The reason that God is not using the gift of tongues

today, is because it was a sign to reach the

Jews for Christ — not the Gentiles.

d. I Corinthians 1:21, 22 says, “For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe. For the Jews require a ________, and the Greeks seek after ____________.”

Note: As soon as the sign (tongues) was shown to the Jews to cause them to listen to the gospel; and to also understand that the church was a doctrine from God, then that sign (tongues), would fade out, as the church became more established.

e. I Corinthians 13:8 says, “Whether there be tongues, they shall __________.”

Note: The sign gifts had fulfilled their purpose to show to the Jews that Jesus is the Christ. After that, there was no need for them. God, in His wisdom, left the language barriers intact from the Tower of Babel. If God would have removed those barriers, then this world would quickly become corrupted again.

As we have already mentioned, the Charismatics, just at the prospect of being able to communicate with all languages, have immediately had the desire to become one with all churches, despite their errors in doctrine and differences in how a person is saved.

Illustration: The Charismatics have readily accepted those in the Catholic religion, and vice-versa. Large Charismatic gatherings are often addressed by priests from the Catholic church.

The Catholic religion gives a different gospel. They do not teach that it is Jesus’ blood alone that washes you from your sin. Jesus is just one of the parts of salvation in the Catholic religion. They believe in seven sacraments necessary to go to heaven.

Jesus did not say that He is one of the ways to heaven, but the only way. John 14:6 says, “Jesus saith unto him, I am the ______, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”

Jesus’ blood does not cleanse you from certain sins, but from all sins. I John 1:7 says, “…the __________ of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from ______ sin.”

The Charismatics use tongues for a sign that is

the exact opposite of what the Bible teaches.

Note: If you claim to be a Christian, the Charismatics are going to quickly ask you a question, to confirm in their minds whether you are truly a Spirit-filled Christian. Their question will be, “Have you received the Spirit yet — have you spoken in tongues?”

If you say that you are a Christian and Spirit-filled, but have not spoken in tongues, then they are not going to believe you (that you are Spirit-filled).

To the Charismatics, tongues  are a sign (from one Gentile Christian   to another)

that you are okay; that is, that you are a Spirit-filled  Christian.

That is the exact opposite purpose of why God gave the gift of tongues.

f. I Corinthians 14:21,22 says, “In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord. Wherefore tongues are for a sign, ______ to them that ______________, but to them that believe ______.”

Note: God says that tongues are a sign to them that believe not — to those who are lost. It is a sign to them that God is supernaturally enabling someone to speak in their own language, to give them the gospel so that they can be saved.

Once again, the Bible says that Jews  will be convinced

by this sign — but not Gentiles.  Gentiles look for ways to reason

things out in their minds — but Jews seek for signs

to be convinced that something is from God. That very fact

is seen in the first use of tongues in the New Testament.

It was not used to reach the Gentiles, but the Jews.

g. Please read Acts 2:1-43, and answer the following questions.

1.) Verse 4 says, “And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other ______________, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”

2.) Notice very carefully of whom the crowd consisted in verse 5, “And there were dwelling at Jerusalem ________, devout men, out of every ____________ under heaven.”

Acts 2:5 is of utmost importance in this discussion.

It is a verse that is often missed, but is the key verse to explain

why God gave the gift of tongues to be used on that occasion.

The key is this — the crowd was Jews, and those Jews were

from every nation under heaven (thus speaking many different languages).

God has clearly said He wanted the gospel to go to the Jews first,

and there was only one way to do that on that occasion — supernaturally

enable His disciples to speak in all of those languages

(languages which they did not know).

3.) Verse 6 says, “Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that __________ man heard them speak in his own ________________.”

4.) Verse 7 tells their surprise at what was happening, “And they were all ____________ and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans?”

5.) Verses 8-11 says, “And how hear we every man in our own ____________, wherein we were ________? Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia, Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes, Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.”

6.) Some of the words being spoken (in tongues so they could understand it) are found in verse 21, “And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall ________ on the name of the Lord shall be __________.”

7.) Once again, notice to whom they were speaking in verse 22, “Ye men of ____________, hear these words…” The message was being given to the Jews.

8.) The gospel was clearly being preached (the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ), as is seen in verses 23 and 24, “Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have __________________ and slain: Whom God hath ____________ up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it.”

9.) Verse 38 clearly shows that repentance was being preached to those Jews, “Then Peter said unto them, ____________, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.”

10.) Verse 41 shows the response of those Jews, “Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about __________ ________________ souls.”

It was a wonderful day when God’s chosen people, the Jews,

(who had been scattered so far and wide because of their sin),

gathered together at Jerusalem, and heard the gospel in a supernatural

way in their own languages, and repented of their sins and received

the Lord Jesus Christ as their personal Savior.

Question: If the gift of tongues was a sign to reach the Jews, then why did a group of Gentiles receive the gift when they got saved? Please read Acts 10:1-48, and answer the following questions.

1.) Verse 1 tells us “There was a certain man in Caesarea called __________________, a centurion of the band called the Italian band.”

Note: A centurion was a Roman soldier in charge of 100 men.

2.) The man was a very moral and good man, humanly speaking. Verse 2 says, “A ____________ man, and one that feared God with all his house, which gave much alms to the people, and ____________ to God alway.”

3.) He was told by an angel in verses 4-6, “And when he looked on him, he was afraid, and said, What is it, Lord? And he said unto him, Thy prayers and thine alms are come up for a ________________ before God. And now send men to Joppa, and call for one Simon, whose surname is Peter: He lodgeth with one Simon a tanner, whose house is by the sea side: he shall ________ thee what thou ________________ to do.”

While God was working on Cornelius’ end, to let him know

that he needed something more than his own righteousness

to enter heaven, God was also working on Peter’s end, to let him know

that all men should have a chance to be saved — even Gentiles.

4.) Verses 9, 10 say, “On the morrow, as they went on their journey, and drew nigh unto the city, Peter went up upon the housetop to ________ about the sixth hour: And he became very hungry, and would have eaten: but while they made ready, he fell into a ____________.”

5.) In verses 11-15, Peter sees a vision where he is told three times to eat meat that was considered unclean to the Jews, and each time he responded, “______ so, Lord; for I have never eaten any thing that is common or ______________.”

6.) Peter was then told, “What God hath ________________, that call not thou ____________.”

7.) Peter did not understand what this vision meant. Verse 17 says, “Now while Peter ______________ in himself what this vision which he had seen should ________, behold, the men which were sent from Cornelius had made inquiry for Simon’s house, and stood before the gate.”

8.) The Lord continues to work in Peter’s heart, as is seen in verses 19, 20, “While Peter thought on the vision, the ____________ said unto him, Behold, three men seek thee. Arise therefore, and get thee down, and ____ with them, doubting nothing: for I have sent them.”

9.) In verse 28, we see that Peter is now putting together the vision and the calling to come to Cornelius, “And he said unto them, Ye know how that it is an ________________ thing for a man that is a ______ to keep company, or come unto one of another nation; but God hath showed me that I should not call any man common or ______________.”

10.) In verses 39, 40, we see Peter giving them the gospel (the death, burial, and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ), “And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they ________ and hanged on a tree: Him God ____________ up the third day, and showed him openly.”

11.) He makes the way of salvation clear to them in verses 42, 43, “And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead. To him give all the prophets witness, that through his ________ whosoever __________________ in him shall receive remission of ________.”

12.) Notice carefully what happens in verses 44-46, “While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. And they of the ________________________ which believed were ____________________, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. For they heard them speak with ______________, and magnify God.”

You will notice that it was the circumcision

(the Jews who had come with Peter), who were astonished,

because the gift of the Holy Ghost was poured out upon

the Gentiles who had just gotten saved. In this exceptional instance,

God did use the gift of tongues to confirm that these people

were truly saved, but only as a sign to the Jews.

13.) The importance of this is seen when Peter went back to report, to the rest of the Jews in Jerusalem, what had happened. Acts 11:2-4 says, “And when Peter was come up to Jerusalem, they that were of the circumcision __________________ with him, Saying, Thou wentest in to men _________________________, and didst eat with them. But Peter rehearsed the matter from the beginning, and expounded it by order unto them…”

14.) Acts 11:12 further says, “And the Spirit bade me go with them, nothing doubting. Moreover these ______ brethren accompanied me, and we entered into the man’s house.”

15.) That convinced the Jews at Jerusalem, according to Acts 11:15-18, “And as I began to speak, the ________ ____________ fell on them, as on us at the beginning. Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost. Forasmuch then as God gave them the like ________ as he did unto us, who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ; what was I, that I could withstand God? When they heard these things, they held their __________, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.”

Note: In each of these instances, the gift of tongues was meant to convince Jews — not Gentiles. Remember I Corinthians 1:22, “For the JEWS require a SIGN, and the Greeks seek after wisdom.”

The modern tongues movement  of today has absolutely nothing

to do with the Jews, for the most part.  It is a Gentile thing today,

which shows that it is not scriptural or of God. God used the gift of

tongues as a sign to convince the Jews. That is exactly why God

is not giving the gift of tongues to missionaries on the multitude

of needy Gentile fields today. It would not convince them of their

need for the Lord Jesus Christ, because they seek for WISDOM

(to reason things out in their minds), rather than seeking for SIGNS.

God has clearly said He wanted the gospel to go to the Jews first, and there was only one way to do that on that occasion — supernaturally enable His disciples to speak in all of those languages (languages which they did not know).

10. You will notice that it was the circumcision (the ________ who had come with Peter), who were ____________________, because the gift of the Holy Ghost was poured out upon the Gentiles who had just gotten saved. This rare event had nothing to do with convincing the Gentiles of anything, but convincing the ________ present that this was of God.

11. The modern tongues movement of today has absolutely nothing to do with the Jews, for the most part. It is a ______________ thing today, which shows that it is not ____________________ or of God. God used the gift of tongues as a sign to convince the Jews.

12. That is exactly why God is ______ giving the gift of ______________ to missionaries on the multitude of needy Gentile fields today. It would not convince them of their need for the Lord Jesus Christ, because they seek for ____________ (to reason things out in their minds), rather than seeking for __________.

Chapter 3

C. The error of revering tongues above all other spiritual gifts in the Christian life.

1. I Corinthians 3:1 says, “And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto ____________, even as unto __________ in Christ.”

As we study the Book of I Corinthians, it is important to remember

that the Church of Corinth was not  a spiritual  church, but a carnal   one.

When dealing with babes in Christ, you have to understand that they often

live a roller coaster existence during that time frame (victorious in the Lord

one day, and a total washout the next day), because they are not yet grounded

in Bible doctrine. They are also very prone in that period to run with every new

thing that they learn — sometimes running too far with it. Then they are taught

more Bible doctrine which gives them the proper balance to that doctrine.

Some of the statements made in I Corinthians 12-14 are not taken in that context

by the Charismatics, and thus they misinterpret what the Bible is actually teaching.

— Please read Ephesians 4:7-16, and answer the following questions.

2. Verses 7 and 8 say, “But unto __________ one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ. Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave __________ unto men.”

3. Verse 11 lists some of those gifts, “And he gave some, ________________; and some, ________________; and some, ______________________; and some, ______________ and ________________.”

4. Verse 12 begins to list the purpose of the Lord giving those gifts, “For the ____________________ of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the ________________ of the body of Christ.”

Note: Perfecting means “to bring to final form; to improve; to refine” – (Merriam Webster’s 11th Collegiate Dictionary)

The men with the above spiritual gifts do not personally make the people to whom they minister perfect in the sense of being without sin; but they give them the Word of God so that they might grow as Christians, and become more like Christ.

5. Verse 13 says, “Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the __________________ of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the ______________ of the stature of the fulness of Christ.”

6. Verse 14 shows the desired impact of spiritual gifts in the church, “That we henceforth be no more children, ____________ to and fro, and carried about with every ________ of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive.”

7. Verse 15 finishes that thought by saying, “But speaking the truth in love, may ________ ____ into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ.”

Note: With these verses in mind, please read I Corinthians chapter 12, and answer the following questions.

8. I Corinthians 12:1 shows us that God wants us to understand what spiritual gifts are: “Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ________________.”

9. God also wants us to understand that not everyone has the same spiritual gifts, as is seen in verse 4. “Now there are ______________________ of gifts, but the same Spirit.”

Note: Children see others get something, and they begin wanting the same thing (actually, many adults are guilty of the same thing, only the toys get bigger and more expensive).

The young believers at Corinth had seen some very

impressive spiritual gifts displayed, and they, like children,

all wanted to have the same gifts. So the teaching was clearly

given that not all believers have the same spiritual gifts.

10. Every born again Christian has spiritual gifts, as is seen by verses 7 and 11, “But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to __________ man to profit withal.” “But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to __________ man severally as he will.”

11. A list of some spiritual gifts is given in verses 8-10, “For to one is given by the Spirit the word of ____________; to another the word of __________________ by the same Spirit; To another __________ by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of ______________ by the same Spirit; To another the working of ________________; to another ________________; to another ____________________ of spirits; to another divers kinds of ______________; to another the ____________________________ of tongues.”

Note: Please carefully read verses 12-27. The illustration is given of the human body to illustrate the truth about the body of Christ, the church. To have a body, you have to have different members, or else you have a mutated, handicapped body in some way.

12. Verses 12 and 13 say, “For as the body is ______, and hath many ______________, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ. For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.”

13. Verse 14 says, “For the body is not ______ member, but ________.”

14. Verse 15 says, “If the ________ shall say, Because I am not the ________, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?”

Note: Read verses 16 and 17. What if the members of the human body (hands, feet, ears, eyes, etc.) all decided that they wanted to be like the most prominent member of the body, the one that was always seen and noticed (let’s say, the nose).

Okay, your hands are suddenly part of the nose. You now have no hands. How are you going to carry things?

Your feet are now part of the nose. How are you going to walk anywhere?

Your eyes are now part of your nose. How are you going to see anything?

Your ears are now part of your nose. How are you going to hear anything?

This whole illustration is given to show the error the Corinthians

were doing in regard to the matter of spiritual gifts. They were trying

to say that one gift (tongues) was more important than any other gift.

And that if the members of the body (the Christians who were members

of that local church), were not speaking in tongues, then something was

wrong or lacking with them (that they did not truly have the Holy Spirit,

or had not been baptized by Him as yet). So I Corinthians 12:12,13

was given to show that that was false teaching. “For as the body is one,

and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many,

are one body: so also is Christ. For by one Spirit are we all baptized

into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond

or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.”

All truly born again Christians have the Holy Spirit abiding in them, and have been baptized by Him. “For BY ONE SPIRIT are we ALL BAPTIZED into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and HAVE BEEN ALL MADE TO DRINK INTO ONE SPIRIT.”

The Charismatics teach that you have to pray and

plead for the Holy Spirit; and to then be baptized of Him

(and when He baptizes you, you will speak in tongues).

That is totally contrary to what the Bible teaches here.

If God does not teach in the Bible what they are

experiencing, then who is giving them their experiences?

15. Isaiah 8:20 says, “To the law and to the __________________: if they speak not according to this ________, it is because there is no light in them.”

What you will find, if you begin to talk with those in

the Charismatic movement, is that they no longer accept

the written Word of God, the Bible, as the final authority.

They have replaced it with their own experiences.

Whenever they have an experience that is contrary

to the Word of God, they then take the experience

as more authoritative than the Bible.

Illustration: Here is a good example of that fact. In the book, Holy Laughter, by Charles and Frances Hunter, they write, “Once you begin to walk in the supernatural you really have to be ready for anything and everything and NEVER QUESTION the way God does it!” (What they mean is, “If you want to get in on the supernatural events in the Charismatic movement, you must not question what happens by the Word of God, because there will appear to be a contradiction.”)

She continues writing, “…when Charles and I were married and we began TO NIBBLE AROUND where the Holy Spirit was concerned, we saw ‘those’ people with both hands raised! … Whenever you begin to nibble, however, sooner or later you’re going to get caught! … We began to hear a lot about a woman named Kathryn Kuhlman. … What was this peculiar, unspiritual thing that made her push them all down [“slaying in the Spirit”]? We rejected it, of course, but our hungry little ‘SPIRITUAL PIG’ HEARTS drew us to one of her [Kathryn Kuhlman] meetings the next morning after the experience at the Charismatic Conference. I [Francis Hunter] stepped into the aisle. She merely said, ‘Jesus, bless my sister,’ and bless me He did! Faster than you can blink an eye, I was lying on my back on the floor of the First Presbyterian Church in my very best dress. … All the arguments I previously had about the baptism with the Holy Spirit and speaking with other tongues disappeared instantly! (pp. 13,19,20).” (April 16, 2002 David Cloud, Fundamental Baptist Information Service, P.O. Box 610368, Port Huron, MI 48061, fbns@wayoflife.org)

And there you have it. At one time, based on the Bible,

they rejected what the Charismatics were doing.

“What was this peculiar, unspiritual thing that made her

push them all down [“slaying in the Spirit”]?

We rejected it, of course…”

They rejected slaying in the spirit as unscriptural, and yet, they went to hear a woman preacher who practiced that very thing. It was unscriptural to even go and hear a woman preacher.

16. I Timothy 2:11-14 says, “Let the __________ learn in ______________ with all subjection. But I suffer ______ a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. For Adam was first formed, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being ________________ was in the transgression.”

Note: So they were placing themselves in an unscriptural position under a woman preacher who practiced unscriptural things. Notice it was Mrs. Hunter who was first deceived in the meeting.

“I [Francis Hunter] stepped into the aisle. She merely said, ‘Jesus, bless my sister,’ and bless me He did! Faster than you can blink an eye, I was lying on my back on the floor of the First Presbyterian Church in my very best dress. … All the arguments I previously had about the baptism with the Holy Spirit and speaking with other tongues disappeared instantly!”

Mr. Hunter then later followed her into error, just like with Adam and Eve. Eve was deceived, and then caused her husband to sin.

17. Genesis 3:4-6 says, “And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. And when the __________ saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she ________ of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and ________ also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.”

After Mrs. Hunter had her experience, she said,

“All the arguments I previously had about the baptism with the

Holy Spirit and speaking with other tongues disappeared instantly!”

It was right there that experience became her authority — not the Bible.

That is exactly why the Charismatic movement is setting the stage for

the end-time deception  of the antichrist. They are teaching that the

Bible is not the final authority, but signs and wonders are; and that

fits the exact plan of deception that the antichrist is going to use.

18. II Thessalonians 2:9, 10 says, “Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all __________ and __________ and lying ______________, And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.”

19. Remember the clear picture of the Charismatic movement given in Matthew 7:21-23, “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the ________ of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not ____________________ in thy name? and in thy name have cast out ____________? and in thy name done many __________________ works? And then will I profess unto them, I __________ knew you: ____________ from me, ye that work iniquity.”

20. It is through the written Word of God, the Bible, that we prove what is God’s will, and what is not. John 17:17 says, “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy ________ is truth.”

Note: Sanctify means “to set apart to a sacred purpose or to religious use; consecrate” (Merriam Webster’s 11th Collegiate Dictionary)

That sacred purpose is God’s will and plan for our lives. It is only through God’s Word, the Bible, that we confirm that sacred purpose for our lives.

21. Romans 12:1, 2 says, “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye ______________________ by the renewing of your _________, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, ________ of God.”

Referring back to I Corinthians chapter 12, here are more questions:

22. Speaking of the church, verse 18 says, “But now hath ______ set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath ______________ him.”

23. Verses 22 and 23 say, “Nay, much more those members of the body, which seem to be more ____________, are necessary: And those members of the body, which we think to be ________ honourable, upon these we bestow more ________________ honour; and our uncomely parts have more abundant comeliness.”

24. Verses 29 and 30 say, “Are ______ apostles? are ______ prophets? are ______ teachers? are ______ workers of miracles? Have ______ the gifts of healing? do ______ speak with tongues? do ______ interpret?”

The Charismatics make the gift of tongues

the test  of spirituality or of being Spirit-filled.

But the Bible is very clear that the Holy Spirit does

NOT give the SAME GIFTS to every Christian.

So to make tongues   a test of being Spirit-filled,

and to urge every Christian to seek that gift,

is to go exactly opposite of what the Bible teaches.

Note: Please read I Corinthians chapter 14, and answer the following questions. Also remember that this passage was written to babes in Christ. At the moment, they were all clamoring like little children for the best gift (tongues, in their thinking). Please stop for a few minutes, and read I Corinthians chapter 13, to see what is to be the motive behind all gifts.

The delicate balance was to get these immature Christians to see that there was a place for tongues (to reach unbelieving Jews with the gospel), but that they were using the gift in a carnal way for personal prestige in the eyes of others.

— So, once again, please read I Corinthians chapter 14, and answer the following questions.

25. Verse 1 says, “Follow after ______________, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may ________________.”

Note: Prophesy means “to give instruction in religious matters; to preach; to make a prediction” – (Merriam Webster’s 11th Collegiate Dictionary)

26. Verse 2 says, “For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man __________________________ him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.”

27. Verse 3 says, “But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to ______________________, and exhortation, and comfort.”

Note: Edify means “to build; to establish; to instruct and improve”– (Merriam Webster’s 11th Collegiate Dictionary)

Speaking in an unknown tongue does not help anyone, because it is unknown what was said. But prophesying does help others, because it builds them up in the faith and comforts them.

28. Verse 4 says, “He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth ______________; but he that prophesieth edifieth the ____________.”

Remember, this was being spoken to babes in Christ.

This was a gentle way of showing them that this business

with tongues was a selfish thing. It was only building up

themselves — not others in the church. But instruction

and preaching that people could actually understand,

would result in building up the church.

29. Verse 5 goes on with the same gentle rebuke, “I would that ye all spake with tongues, but ____________ that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the ____________ may receive edifying.”

30. Verse 9 says, “So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be ____________________, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the ______.”

31. Verse 12 says, “Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the ________________ of the church.”

Note: Anything done in the church needs to have the good of the people in mind — building them up and establishing them in the faith. But if they cannot understand what is being said, they are not going to be edified (built up and established).

32. Verse 13 says, “Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may __________________.”

Note: We are going to look at verses 27 and 28 a little later. Those verses forbid anyone to speak in tongues in a service, unless an interpreter is found first. So there should never be anyone speaking in tongues in a service, unless there is already someone there who is going to be able to interpret it for the rest of the congregation (either the person himself, or some other person).

33. Verse 16 says, “Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth ______ what thou ____________?”

34. Verses 18 and 19 say, “I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all: Yet in the ____________ I had rather speak ________ words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ______ thousand words in an unknown tongue.”

Note: Have you ever visited a church on a foreign mission field? Even though you are there to be a blessing and a help, if you do not know the language, you do not get anything out of the message. You see the people laugh sometimes, and be serious at other times, but you are left out of it.

Even though the gift of tongues was still being used

(to be a sign to the Jews and to reach them with the gospel),

Paul made it very clear that even in those days, he would

rather speak 5 words with his understanding

(so that he could teach people in the congregation),

than get up and speak 10,000 words in a

tongue unknown to those people.

Note: This principle is not followed at all in the vast majority tongues-speaking churches. They count it much more spiritual to speak in tongues in a service, than to teach the people in the language that they actually know.

Chapter 4

D. The regulations for the use of tongues in the church.

1. Tongues are only to be used when there are Jews present in a service.

a. Verse 22 says, “Wherefore tongues are for a sign, ______ to them that ______________, but to them that believe ______: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.”

In our day, how many Jewish people (who speak a foreign language)

have you heard of walking into a tongues-speaking church, sitting down,

and hearing someone (who did not know their language) get up and give

them the gospel in their own language; and the Jewish person getting saved?

I have never read of one such confirmed incident. According to the Bible,

that should be the ONLY REASON for speaking in tongues in a church service.

If there are no Jewish people in the congregation who are not yet saved,

what is the point of speaking in tongues? There is no Biblical basis.

2. Tongues were only allowed to be spoken by a maximum of three people in any one church service.

a. Verse 23 says, “If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and ______ speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are ______?”

Note:   Mad means “disordered in mind, insane.”  (Merriam Webster’s 11th Collegiate Dictionary)

That is the exact situation in the vast majority of tongues-speaking churches.

If the average person came into one of their meetings and heard everyone

jabbering unintelligibly, they would say that they were mad (insane).

b. Verse 26 shows that they had a problem — everyone wanted to get up and speak in their services. “How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, __________ ______ of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.”

c. So to correct that problem, some regulations were made in verse 27, “If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by ______, or at the most by __________, and that by course; and let one interpret.”

In a church service, no matter how many foreign-speaking

Jews were present, the most that could get up and speak

in tongues was 2 or 3. That was the limit, and no more.

How many tongues-speaking churches follow that rule?

3. Tongues were only allowed to be spoken by one person at a time.

a. Verse 27 says, “If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by ____________; and let one interpret.”

Note: Course means “an ordered process or succession”  (Merriam Webster’s 11th Collegiate Dictionary)

That means that if tongues were to be spoken in a

church service, only one person could be speaking them

at a time. If there were others that wanted to speak

(three being the maximum), they had to wait their turn.

How many tongues-speaking churches have people

praying and babbling in tongues all at one time?

Many. They are clearly disobeying this rule.

4. Tongues were only allowed to be spoken, if one person with the gift of interpretation was found first, to interpret for all.

a. Verse 27 says, “If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let ______ interpret.”

b. Verse 28 says, “But if there be no ______________________, let him keep ______________ in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.”

What does this mean? It means that if someone wanted to

speak in tongues in a service, someone with the gift of

interpretation must FIRST be found, or the person could

not get up and speak.  That ONE person would then have

to be the interpreter for anyone (with the maximum of three)

who was going to speak in tongues in that service (the true

gift of interpretation would be able to interpret any and all

languages spoken). How many tongues-speaking

churches today follow the two parts of this rule?

5. Tongues were only allowed to be spoken in a church service where things were done decently and in order.

a. Verse 33 says, “For God is not the author of __________________, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.”

Note: That one word sums up the services of tongues-speaking churches — confusion. Many people are babbling unintelligibly. Others are dancing around the auditorium. Others are on the floor trying to talk and get up, but cannot. That is utter confusion, and God is not its author. Then who is?

6. Tongues were only allowed to be spoken by men, not by women.

a. Verse 34 says, “Let your __________ keep ______________ in the churches: for it is ______ permitted unto them to __________; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law.”

It has been said that if women would keep silence in

the church, speaking in tongues would cease overnight.

That might be a little exaggeration, but not much.

It is recorded that a young woman was the first to

speak in tongues in America, and they continue to

speak openly in tongues in churches today

— in direct rebellion to what the Bible teaches.

Note:   Charles F. Parham started the Bethel Bible College in Topeka, Kansas in 1900. There were about 40 students, and they were asked to research the question, “What is the Bible evidence of the baptism of the Holy Ghost?” They unanimously agreed that tongues was the evidence. From that time, the Fall of 1900, there was great effort on their part to receive that baptism. Agnes Ozman, one of the students, on January 1, 1901, had a tongues-speaking experience. That experience has been referred to as the beginning of the modern Pentecostal revival. That eventually led to the development, in 1914, of the Assemblies of God churches. (The Modern Tongues Movement, by Robert Gromacki, as recorded in The Way of Life Encyclopedia, by David W. Cloud, pg. 79)

b. Verse 35 continues in regard to the women, “And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at ________: for it is a shame for women to __________ in the church.”

c. I Timothy 2:11,12 says, “Let the woman learn in ______________ with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to __________, nor to usurp authority over the ______, but to be in silence.”

Note: Many Charismatic churches not only allow women to speak in tongues, but they also allow them to preach in the church services. Many such churches have even chosen women pastors.

They try to excuse their disobedience to these clear verses by saying that these Scriptures “were for another day…” and do not apply to us now. But that is not what the Scripture clearly says.

d. I Corinthians 14:37 says, “If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him ______________________ that the things that I write unto you are the ________________________ of the Lord.”

Note: Some have said that Paul just did not like women, and that is why he wrote this instruction. But the Bible is clear that these are the COMMANDMENTS of the LORD. It is God that has forbidden women to speak in tongues and to preach in churches. It is just another proof that the Charismatic movement does not follow what the Bible says, but their own experiences.

Note: Verse 39 says, “Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid ______ to speak with ______________.”

Some have used this verse to say that it is wrong to condemn

those who speak in tongues today. The reason that we condemn

the practices of those who speak in tongues today is because

they are not obeying the clear Scriptures in regard to it.

They are disobeying all of the above rules, and are

justifying their actions. It is not us who are condemning them,

it is the very Scripture that is condemning them.

Note: John 12:48 says, “He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the ________ that I have spoken, the same shall __________ him in the last day.”

Final Test

Charismatic Movement Part 2

1. To break down denominational barriers would require that Christians break down or count unimportant what the Bible ______________.

2. When God confounded the language of all mankind, He did something that would basically renew itself every ____________________.

3. When the gift of tongues was given, it was not a special gift for spiritually elite to show off, it was a practical gift that was used to get the ____________ to people in their own ________________.

4. The reason that God is not using the gift of tongues today, is because it was a sign to reach the ________ for Christ — not the Gentiles.

5. Acts 2:5 is of utmost importance in this discussion. It is a verse that is often missed, but is the key verse to explain why God gave the gift of tongues to be used on that occasion. The key is this: the crowd was ________, and those Jews were from every ____________ under heaven (thus speaking many __________________ languages).

6. This whole illustration is given to show the error the Corinthians were doing in regard to the matter of spiritual gifts. They were trying to say that one gift (______________) was more important than any other gift.

7. All truly born again Christians have the Holy Spirit abiding in them, and have been baptized by Him. “ For BY ONE SPIRIT are we ______ ________________ into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and HAVE BEEN ______ MADE TO DRINK INTO ONE SPIRIT.” (I Corinthians 12:13)

8. Isaiah 8:20 says, “To the law and to the __________________: if they speak not according to this ________, it is because there is no light in them.”

9. What you will find, if you begin to talk with those in the Charismatic movement, is that they no longer accept the written Word of God, the __________, as the __________ authority. They have replaced it with their own experiences. Whenever they have an experience that is contrary to the Word of God, they then take the ______________________ as more authoritative than the Bible.

10. That is exactly why the Charismatic movement is setting the stage for the end-time __________________ of the antichrist. They are teaching that the Bible is not the final authority, but __________ and wonders are; and that fits the exact plan of deception that the ____________________ is going to use.

11. II Thessalonians 2:9 and 10 says, “Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all __________ and __________ and lying ______________, And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.”

12. The Charismatics make the gift of tongues the test of spirituality or of being Spirit-filled. But the Bible is very clear that the Holy Spirit does ______ give the ________ GIFTS to every Christian.

13. Tongues are only to be used when there are ________ present in a service.

14. “Wherefore tongues are for a sign, ______ to them that ______________, but to them that believe ______: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.”

15. Tongues were only allowed to be spoken by a maximum of __________ people in any one church service.

16. Tongues were only allowed to be spoken by ______ person at a time.

17. Tongues were only allowed to be spoken, if one person with the gift of ____________________________ was found __________, to interpret for all.

18. That one word sums up the services of tongues-speaking churches — __________________. Many people are babbling unintelligibly. Others are dancing around the auditorium. Others are on the floor trying to talk and get up, but cannot. That is utter confusion, and God is not its author. Then who is?

19. Tongues were only allowed to be spoken by men, not by __________.

20. Verse 34 says, “Let your __________ keep ______________ in the churches: for it is ______ permitted unto them to __________; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law.”

21. John 12:48 says, “He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the ________ that I have spoken, the same shall __________ him in the last day.”

How The Bible Says You Can Be Saved

1. Do you realize that you have sinned? (Rom. 3:23) (I John 1:8)

2. Do you realize the penalty for your sin? (Rom. 6:23)

3. Do you realize that if you die in your sin, you will go to hell?  (Psa. 9:17) (Prov. 15:24) (Luke 12:4,5)

4. Do you realize that the Lord Jesus Christ paid that death penalty for you? (Rom. 5:8) (I Pet. 3:18) (I Pet. 2:24)

5. Do you realize that it is only through the shed blood of the Lord Jesus Christ that you can be saved, and not through any good works of your own? (I John 1:7) (I Pet. 1:18,19) (Eph. 2:8,9) (Titus 3:5-7)

6. Do you realize that after Jesus died for your sins, He arose victorious from the grave the third day, proving that His sacrifice was sufficient to pay for all of the sins of the whole world? (I Cor. 15:1-4)

7. Do you realize that to be saved you must repent (you must have the desire to turn from your sin and false beliefs, and for the Lord Jesus Christ to cleanse you from all your sin)? (Luke 13:3) (Acts 3:19) (Acts 26:20)

8. Do you realize that after you get saved, God’s first command for you is for you to get baptized and then to live for Him?  (Acts 2:41) (II Cor. 5:17)

9. Are you ready to now pray and ask the Lord Jesus Christ to forgive you of all your sins, and to save you? (John 1:12) (Rom. 10:13) (I John 5:13)

* If you are, then bow your head right now and confess to God that you are a sinner deserving judgment. Ask the Lord Jesus Christ to forgive you of all your sins, and to save you. Ask Him to cleanse your life, and to give you the power to live for Him. Ask Him to lead you to a good, Bible-preaching church, where you can follow the first command after salvation — that of getting baptized and publicly confessing your faith in Him. Ask Him to help you find some good Christian friends to encourage you in the faith and to help you grow.

q — I have just asked the Lord Jesus Christ to save me.
