Is a man disqualified from the ministry for divorce and remarriage, or just polygamy?

Question:

You wrote, “For New Testament leaders, God makes it very clear that having more than one wife is NOT acceptable to Him.   I Timothy 3:1,2 says, “This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work. A bishop then must be blameless, THE HUSBAND OF ONE WIFE…”   I Timothy 3:12 says, “Let the deacons be THE HUSBANDS OF ONE WIFE…”

Then you would agree that this passage of scripture is speaking of polygamy?

Answer:

It covers both polygamy and divorce & remarriage. A divorced person has more than one wife/husband, if presently married and a former wife/husband is still living.

Romans 7:2, 3 says, “For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband. So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man.” She is under the LAW OF HER HUSBAND until he dies, in other words, he is still considered her husband — just not her present husband.

A man who is divorced and remarried is disqualified from being a pastor, missionary, or evangelist. See also:
