Bible Study Course

Baptism

Welcome to booklet number two in this series, dealing with the subject of Baptism. This matter is often misunderstood, delayed, and twisted as to its meaning. The Bible is very clear on this subject, so please get a KING JAMES translation of the Bible, and begin another exciting study in God’s Word!

Chapter 1

I. What Is Baptism?

A. The meaning of baptism.

Note: The word baptize comes from the Greek word bapto (the New Testament was first written in Greek). The word means, “to dip, to immerse, to cover wholly (completely).” This is the meaning of the word, so three things must happen when you are baptized:

#1 – You must be immersed – “put down into the water.”

#2 – You must be submerged – “totally covered by the water.”

#3 – You must be emerged – “brought up out of the water.”

Getting baptized any other way does not fulfill

the meaning of the word baptize.

B. The manner of baptism.

1. In Matthew 3:6, John the Baptist was baptizing people in ____________.

Note: Please notice that John the Baptist was baptizing people “in Jordan” (in the Jordan River). If the proper manner of baptism was sprinkling people with water, then why would they go in the river? Granted, children may like to get in the water whenever they can (they like to walk through mud puddles, instead of going around them), but adults are not normally like that. Adults do not enjoy walking around with their feet sloshing in soaking wet shoes. Adults do not like to go around in soaking wet clothes that cling heavily to them. If sprinkling was the proper manner of baptism, then they would not have gone in the water. They would have stood beside the water, and just dipped their fingers down into the water and lightly sprinkled the person.

2. In verse 16 of that same chapter, Jesus went up out of the __________ after getting baptized.

Note: The former point is made again. If the proper manner of baptism was sprinkling, then why were they in the water and had to come up out of it?

3. According to Acts 8:38, both Philip and the eunuch “went ________ both into the water,” and then Philip baptized (immersed, covered) him with water.

Note: Remember the eunuch’s question? (see verse 36) “See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?” If sprinkling was the proper manner of baptism, then why did he ask about being baptized when he saw that they were near a body of water? If sprinkling was an acceptable manner of baptism, then why did he not ask as they were traveling along, “Philip, would you please stop the chariot; break out your canteen; and baptize me (sprinkle me)?” Why did he not do that? Because he knew that the very meaning of the word baptism means to go down into the water.

There is never any mention in the Bible of “sprinkling”

or “pouring” water over someone to baptize him.

Note: If a person says, “I have been baptized” (which means, dipped down into, immersed, covered with water), when he has really only been sprinkled, then he is giving a statement which contradicts itself. He either has never learned the meaning of baptism, or else he is being deceitful in his use of words.

Illustration: If your mother told you to wash the dishes, would you be obeying her if you:

#1 – Just rinsed the dishes off under the faucet?

q YES q NO

#2 – Just sprinkled them under the sprayer?

q YES q NO

Neither of these would be obeying. She would expect you to dip those dishes all the way down into soapy water and scrub them good. If you insist that you washed them, then you are being deceitful in your use of the word wash.

It is important to obey parents. How much more important it is to obey God! When He tells us to get baptized, He expects that

we will do it in the manner that He commands.

C. The message of baptism.

Note: Baptism is an outward act of identification with someone or something. That is why the manner in which you are baptized is so important, because it is a message in picture form.

1. Please read Matthew 3:1-11, and fill in the following blanks.

    a. John’s message was for people to repent, because the kingdom of heaven was “at ________” (close or near). (vs. 2)

    b. The people went out and publicly identified themselves with his message by being “________________ of him” and confessing their sins. (vs.6)

    c. John said that there was coming after him a person who “is ________________ than I,” a person whose shoes he was not worthy to bear. (vs.11)

John’s message was that the long awaited Messiah

(the Savior) was coming, and that people needed to

repent and get ready for Him. Those people who

believed his message openly identified themselves

with it by being baptized.

Note: It is obvious that some were coming just for the outward show and did not really believe, as is seen in verses 7 and 8.

Matthew 21:25 explains that some refused to believe that John’s message was “from ____________,” and not just of men.

2. In Matthew 3:13-17, Jesus was baptized by John to be identified with fulfilling “all __________________________.” (vs.15)

Note: Jesus had never sinned, so He had no need of repentance. But Jesus did want to be publicly identified with John’s message from heaven, so He was baptized.

3. Matthew 28:18-20 states that we are to get baptized “in the name of the ____________, and of the ______, and of the __________ __________.”

4. Romans 6:3-5 shows that ______________ is a picture of Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection.

Note: The message of baptism is that we are publicly identifying ourselves with Jesus Christ, the Messiah. When we go under the water, it pictures our death to the old life of sin. When we come up out of the water, it pictures our new life in Christ. Baptism is therefore an outward picture of what has taken place inwardly in our hearts.

When people get saved, they should not be ashamed

of the Lord Jesus Christ. God has provided a means to

do this very thing — getting baptized. There is no better

way to show that you are unashamed of the Lord Jesus

Christ, than to publicly submit to believer’s baptism.

5. Romans 10:11 says, “For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ______________.”

REVIEW:

1. The word bapto means, “to ______, to immerse, to cover wholly (completely).”

2. A person is giving a statement which ______________________ itself if he says, “I was baptized by sprinkling.”

3. Baptism is an outward act of ____________________________ with someone or something.

4. We are to get baptized in the name of:

a.

b.

c.

5. When we go under the water, it pictures our __________ to the old life of sin.

6. When we come up out of the water, it pictures our new ________ in Christ.

Chapter 2

II. Why Should We Be Baptized?

A. To obey the command of Scripture.

1. Matthew 28:19 commands us to, “go ye therefore,” to “teach,” and to, “______________” people.

2. In Acts 2:38, the command is to “repent and be ________________.”

3. When Cornelius and his friends got saved in Acts 10:24,48, Peter then “__________________ them to be baptized” in verse 48.

Note: It is very clear that all believers are commanded to be baptized. So a good reason to be baptized is simply to obey the Lord.

4. John 14:15 says “If ye ________ me” (Jesus), then we should keep His commandments.

5. According to James 1:22-25, we are to be “__________ of the Word, and not hearers only.”

6. James 4:17 states that if we know to do something good, and we do not do it, then we are committing ______.

Illustration: There are many reasons that people give for not being baptized.

Some people are afraid of water.

We can sympathize with their fear, but we often have to do things in life of which we might be afraid. How about children who are afraid of going to the dentist? Would you counsel them to go? Or would it be better to suffer with cavities and aching teeth? It would definitely be better to go to the dentist — despite the fear! Although the thought of getting put under the water may be fearful for some, getting baptized is for his/her own spiritual good. It is the first step of obedience to the Lord, and it will strengthen the person’s spiritual life.

Some people are afraid of crowds.

We can sympathize with their fear, too. But many people are also scared-to-death at their weddings as they stand before a crowd of people. Do they then call off the wedding? No, they go ahead with it anyway. Why? Because they love the person so much, they are willing to face a little time of nervousness. Although people may be nervous about getting baptized in front of a crowd of people, they should still do it out of love for the Lord, and because they are not ashamed of Him.

— Why Should We Be Baptized?

B. To openly confess our faith in Christ.

1. Matthew 10:32 says that if we want Jesus to confess us before His Father, then we need to confess Him “before ______.”

2. According to Romans 6:3,4, baptism is a public identification of us with the death, burial, and resurrection of _______________________.

3. Acts 8:12 shows that when the people believed Philip’s preaching about the kingdom of God, and when they believed in the name of Jesus Christ, both the men and the women “were ________________.”

Illustration: If someone has recently had a new grandchild, what will she want to do? Show you a picture!

In the same way, when someone is newly saved, he should want to obey the Lord and show in picture form what has taken place in his heart.

Baptism pictures death to that former life of sin,

and resurrection to a fresh new life lived for Jesus Christ.

REVIEW:

1. The first reason for getting baptized is to obey the ______________ of Scripture.

2. If we know that we should do something, and we do not do it, then we are committing ______.

3. Although some may be nervous about getting baptized in front of a crowd, they should still do it because they love the Lord and are not ______________ of Him.

Chapter 3

III. Who Should Get Baptized?

A. ONLY believers in Christ.

1. In Acts 8:36, the eunuch wondered “what doth ________________ me to be baptized?”

2. In the next verse, Philip told him that he could get baptized “If thou ________________ with all thine heart.”

3. What he believed is made clear in verse 37 when he said, “I believe that __________ _____________ is the Son of God.”

4. Acts 2:41 makes it clear that they “Gladly ________________ his word” before they were baptized.

It is very clear that people were never baptized until

they were old enough to realize that they were sinners,

and that they needed to repent and turn from their sins

to the Lord Jesus Christ to save them. There is no example

in scripture of a baby ever being baptized.

Note: Some churches claim that baptism is to be performed on babies as a sign of circumcision (or as a New Testament replacement for circumcision), but that cannot be supported from the Bible.

First, the Bible never teaches anywhere that baptism is supposed to take the place of circumcision.

Second, to teach that baptism is to be performed on babies as a sign of circumcision is a very inconsistent interpretation and application, because only baby boys were circumcised. But churches who baptize babies, baptize both boy and girl babies. If baptism is supposed to be a New Testament replacement for circumcision, then why are they baptizing baby girls?

Third, if baptism is to be performed on babies as a New Testament replacement of circumcision, then why do we see no examples of it in the New Testament? We never see in the New Testament any parents bringing their newborn babies to the church leaders to be baptized. Why? Because the Bible is very clear that a person cannot be baptized until that person is saved. A baby does not yet realize that he/she is a sinner in need of salvation.

— Who Should Get Baptized?

A. ONLY believers in Christ.

B. ALL believers in Christ.

1. In Matthew 28:18,19, we are commanded to not only teach all nations how to be saved, but we are also to ______________ them once they are saved.

2. Peter tells all the crowd to repent and be ________________ in Acts 2:38.

3. Acts 8:12 shows that Philip baptized “both men and __________” after they got saved.

4. Acts 16:14,15 reveals that a woman named Lydia “and her __________________”were baptized after they were saved.

Baptism is not just limited to men who get saved.

Baptism is for all who are old enough to repent of their

sins and receive the Lord Jesus Christ. The men,

the women, and the children who personally trust

Jesus Christ as their Savior should be baptized.

REVIEW:

1. What must a person do before he/she can get baptized?

2. List three reasons why baptism is not a New Testament replacement for circumcision.

    c.

3. Who should get baptized?

a. Saved men? q YES q NO

b. Saved women? q YES q NO

c. Saved children? q YES q NO

Chapter 4

IV. When Should We Be Baptized?

A. AFTER we are saved.

1. Mark 16:16 reveals that __________________ comes before being baptized.

2. According to Acts 8:12, when the people “________________ Philip preaching,” they were baptized.

3. In Acts 8:35-37, the eunuch was hindered from getting baptized until “thou ________________ with all of thine heart.”

B. AS SOON AS POSSIBLE after we are saved.

1. The people who believed Peter’s preaching in Acts 2:38-41 were baptized “the ________ day.” (vs. 41)

2. The eunuch, in Acts 8:35-37, was baptized at the first place where there was __________.

3. Acts 9:1-9;17,18 relates that Saul was saved, and __________ days later was baptized.

4. In Acts 10:43-48, Peter preaches a message and people repent and get saved. The first thing that Peter then says is, “Can any man forbid water, that these should not be ________________?” (vs.47)

5. The jailer in Acts 16:25-33 was saved and baptized “the same ________ of the night.”

Note: There is a common practice today of churches putting off the matter of baptizing new converts. They give various reasons for their delay (which is disobedience).

First, some churches believe that the new Christian

should not be baptized immediately — in case he did not

really repent (in case he was making a false profession

of faith). So they decide that it is better to have a

“trial period” before they baptize new converts.

Preachers advocating this view often mock churches who do baptize new converts as soon as possible. Some of them have scoffed, “Yea, they are afraid that their converts will not come back again, so they have to baptize them the same service!”

A church should carefully question and deal with people

who come forward, but it is a whole different matter to

scoff at a church for baptizing new converts the same

hour or day that they get saved. Carefully consider the

above verses again. The Scriptural example is to

baptize new converts as soon as possible.

To those groups who advocate waiting, the question then becomes, “How long does a new convert have to wait to sufficiently prove himself? A week? A month? A year? And who makes the decision that a person has waited long enough and is officially, without a doubt, born-again and worthy of baptism?”

What about people who make a profession of faith, and seem to faithfully live for God for a year; but then face trials for their faith and drop out of church? What about people that serve God with great enthusiasm for 2 or 3 years — active in church — leaders in

bringing others to church — but then in adversity, drop out of church altogether, and never darken a church door again?

What about Judas? It is thought that he was with Jesus for 3 1/2 years. None of the apostles knew that he was a lost man. When Jesus warned them that there was an imposter in the group, they each wondered about themselves — no one pointed the finger at Judas.

6. Matthew 26:20-22 says, “Now when the even was come, he sat down with the twelve. And as they did eat, he said, Verily I say unto you, that ______ of ______ shall betray me. And they were exceeding sorrowful, and began every one of them to say unto him, Lord, is it ___?”

Does this mean that you should not baptize a professing believer

until he has been saved for at least 3 1/2 years?

What makes the purest church?    The church that waits

the longest to baptize new converts?  No, what that

makes is a disobedient church.

Note: Churches use the one statement of John the Baptist, and build their doctrine of baptism totally upon it (upon a misinterpretation of it), and then totally ignore the multitude of verses in the Book of Acts that deals with new converts and when they get baptized.

7. Matthew 3:5-9 says, “Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about Jordan, And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins. But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bring forth therefore fruits meet for ____________________: And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.”

Note: John the Baptist was not teaching a waiting period before baptizing people at all — he was baptizing scores and scores of people right then and there. “Then went out to him Jerusalem, and ALL JUDAEA, and ALL THE REGION round about Jordan, AND WERE BAPTIZED OF HIM in Jordan, confessing their sins.”

In the case of the Pharisees and Sadducees who came

to be baptized, John refused to baptize them because

they refused to confess that they had any sin. John

baptized all who came “…confessing their sins.” It

was not that John the Baptist was advocating a

waiting period for them — quite to the contrary, he

was refusing to baptize them because they had no

clear confession of their sin and their need for the

Savior. If they would have shown thus, John would

have baptized them immediately — like he was

doing with everyone else who came.

Note: Now we come to a little different line of thinking among some people that advocate not immediately baptizing new converts.

This group teaches that a person should not get

baptized until he understands more about the decision

that he just made, and more about what baptism means.

This is technically called catechism. Does the Bible say that a person must be catechized before he can be baptized? Once again, the answer is “No.” The example of Scripture is that people were baptized as soon as possible after they were saved.

8. Acts 8:35-38 says, “Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus. And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth ____________ me to be ________________? And Philip said, If thou __________________ with all thine heart, thou ____________. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he ________________ him.”

Why do people make it harder

to get baptized than to get saved?

Note: It is here that we need to ask a question: “Is the decision to get baptized more important that the decision to get saved?” Of course not.

9. I Corinthians 1:17 says, “For Christ sent me not to ______________, but to ____________ the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.”

Note: Paul was not teaching that baptism is unimportant, but that the first and foremost calling is to preach the gospel. Unless people get saved, they are going to spend eternity in hell. Baptism cannot save. Baptism is only a picture of what has taken place inside a person’s life.

This group will not baptize children

who get saved, until they get older.

Question: How old does a person have to be to get saved? What did Jesus say? That you have to be 10 years old? Or 16 years old? Or 21 years old? What did He say?

10. Matthew 19:13,14 says, “Then were there brought unto him ____________ children, that he should put his hands on them, and pray: and the __________________ _______________ them. But Jesus said, Suffer ____________ children, and forbid them not, to ________ unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.”

11. Matthew 18:3,4 says, “And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be __________________, and become as ____________ children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

Note: Jesus emphasized not only allowing children to come to Him, but little children.

If a child is old enough to get saved, then that child is

old enough to get baptized. If a church refuses to

baptize a child that has gotten saved, then that church

is a disobedient church. That church is guilty of causing

a child to go on in disobedience to the Lord.

12. Jesus gave His commission to the church in Matthew 28:18-20, “And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and __________ all nations, __________________ them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”

Note: If someone came to you and wanted to get saved, would you put them off until a later time? Would you say to that one, “I will not help you to understand what to do to be saved today, because I am not sure that you are really sincere yet. I must watch you for a period of time, and see if you really do have a repentant heart.”? That would not be a proper response at all.

And why do people make baptism more complex than

getting saved? A person need only realize that baptism

is a command of God, and that it pictures death to the old

life of sin, and resurrection to a new life lived for Jesus

Christ. If a person insists that the new convert needs

more knowledge than that to get baptized, then he is

saying that he knows more than God.

Illustration: If, on your first day at work, an alarm sounds and your foreman yells, “Fire! Follow me!”, what will you do? Stand there and demand some explanation first? How the fire started? Who started it? What type of material it was burning? How far away the fire station is? If any employee has ever lost his life in a fire there?

When a command is given, you do not stand there and ask foolish questions — you simply obey. There will be time later to learn the full extent of the fire.

The best thing to do now is obey the Bible. Many things

are made clearer as the Christian studies his Bible and

grows. The Christian’s greatest problem is not usually

so much a lack of Bible knowledge, (although there is

always much more to learn). The Christian’s biggest

problem is normally that he is not obeying what he

already knows he should be doing. Getting baptized

is the first command after salvation. That should be

reason enough to simply obey the Lord.

REVIEW:

1. Believing comes ____________ being baptized.

2. The people who believed Peter’s preaching were baptized the same ______.

3. Saul was baptized __________ days after he was saved.

4. The jailer was saved and baptized the same ________ of the night.

5. A person should get baptized as soon as __________________ after he gets saved.

6. In the case of the Pharisees and Sadducees who came to be baptized, John refused to baptize them because they refused to confess that they had any sin. John baptized all who came “…confessing their sins.” It was not that John the Baptist was advocating a waiting period for them — quite to the contrary, he was refusing to baptize them because they had no clear confession of their sin and their need for the Savior. If they would have shown thus, John would have baptized them ______________________ — like he was doing with ________________ ________ who came.

9. And why do people make baptism more complex than getting saved? A person need only realize that baptism is a ______________ of God, and that it pictures death to the old life of sin, and resurrection to a new life lived for Jesus Christ.

Chapter 5

V. Who Should Do The Baptizing?

A. Someone chosen of God.

1. In John 1:32,33, John the Baptist said God “________ me to baptize with water.”

2. In Luke 6:13, Jesus chose 12 of His disciples for a special task, and He gave them the special name of “________________.”

Note: These men are seen baptizing in the book of Acts, such as in Acts 2:38-41, where __________ tells them to be baptized.

B. Someone ordained by God’s people.

1. According to Mark 3:14, Jesus “________________ twelve” disciples that He might send them forth to preach.

Note: In this case, ordaining these men was publicly setting them apart for a special ministry to others.

2. 1 Timothy 4:14 shows that the presbytery (the elders or leaders of the church) laid their __________ on Timothy.

3. 1 Timothy 5:22 states that Timothy was to “lay hands ________________ on no ______.”

Note: When a man is ordained to the ministry, ordained men lay their hands upon his head and pray for God’s blessing upon his ministry.

Just as baptism is the public indication that a person

is now saved and intends to live for the Lord; even so,

ordination is the public indication that the church

is setting apart that man for the ministry.

4. In Acts 6:1-6, the need arose for more men to help in the church (later these men were given the name of “deacons”), and so the men were chosen by the congregation and set before the apostles, who then prayed for them, and “laid their __________ on them.” (vs. 6)

5. Philip was one of those ordained deacons from Acts 6, and in Acts 8:35-38, we see him going down into the water with the eunuch “and he __________________ him.”

Only ordained men are seen in the New Testament

baptizing new converts.

Note: In Acts 9:17,18, we see Ananias baptizing Saul. We are not told specifically in the Bible that he was ordained, but church history tells us that he was the pastor of the Damascus Church; thus, he would have been ordained. From these examples, we also see that ordained deacons can also baptize new converts.

Why are church leaders the only ones who should

baptize new coverts? Because the Lord wants the

new convert to realize the importance of the local

church, and He wants that new Christian to attend

it faithfully (Hebrews 10:25). When a person gets

saved, the next step is to get baptized. And if it is

the church leaders authorized to baptize, then it

will help the new Christian to get acquainted

with a local church where he may attend.

Question:

1. Have you repented of your sin, and asked the Lord Jesus Christ to save you? q YES q NO

    a. If “Yes,” when did you get saved? ___________________

    b. If “No,” would you like to be saved now?

    q YES q NO

(If “Yes,” please turn to the back cover now.)

2. If you are saved, have you been baptized since you were saved under the water, by an ordained pastor or deacon?

    q YES q NO

Chapter 6

VI. Should Baptism Ever Be Repeated?

A. Yes, baptism should be repeated if a person was not saved when he was previously baptized.

1. Acts 19:1-5 reveals that some people who had been baptized by John the Baptist had never believed on Jesus, so when they did make that decision, “they were ________________ in the name of the Lord Jesus.”

2. According to Acts 8:36,37, permission cannot be given to be baptized until a person ________________ on Jesus Christ with all his heart.

If a person was baptized before he was truly born

again, then it is his duty to be baptized again. The first

time was meaningless, because there was no death

to the old life of sin — for he was still a lost sinner.

B. Yes, baptism should be repeated if a person was baptized in the wrong manner.

1. Remember, the very meaning of the word baptize is, “to dip, to immerse, to cover ____________ (completely)”.

2. The example of Acts 8:38 is that of going ________ into the water.

3. The picture of Romans 6:3-5 shows that baptism pictures __________, burial, and resurrection.

If a person’s baptism consisted of being sprinkled or

poured upon, then it was not done according to the

Bible. The person’s duty is to now obey the Lord

and get baptized in the proper manner.

C. Yes, baptism should be repeated if a person was baptized by an unqualified person.

1. I Timothy 3:1 says, “This is a true saying, If a ______ desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work.”

2. I Timothy 3:12 says, “Let the deacons be the ________________ of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.”

Note: A bishop or pastor or deacon is to be a man. These are the ones that we see baptizing in the Book of Acts.

If a person was baptized by a woman preacher,

or by anyone other than an ordained man of God,

then that person needs to be baptized again.

D. Yes, baptism should be repeated if a person was baptized by an unscriptural church.

1. I Corinthians 1:17 says, “For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the ____________: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.

2. Galatians 2:21-3:3 says, “I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain. O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you? This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? Are ye so foolish? having begun in the ____________, are ye now made perfect by the __________?”

Note: If you were baptized by a church that believes that baptism washes away your sins, then that was not a true and scriptural baptism at all. It did not symbolize at all what baptism really pictures.

If you were baptized by a church that believes that

salvation can be lost, then that church does not preach

a true salvation, but a mixed up faith/works salvation.

Such a baptism does not picture a salvation settled

on the cross, but a salvation which depends upon

you and your own continued good works.

That is a baptism of works, not a picture of a faith that is resting totally upon Jesus’ finished work. So such a baptism is a false picture, and needs to be done properly.

E. No, a person should not get baptized again if he was saved first, and then baptized in the proper manner by a Scriptural church.

1. Romans 6:4 shows that when we go down into the water, we are picturing the death and burial of Jesus Christ. When we come up out of the water (verse 5), it pictures His ________________________, and our new life in Christ.

To submit ourselves to two baptisms (two proper ones)

once we have been saved is totally against the Bible.

It would then be picturing two deaths, two burials,

and two resurrections of Jesus Christ.

2. Hebrews 9:28 makes it very clear that, “Christ was ________ offered to bear the sins of many.”

Note: To get baptized again would then be picturing that the new life in Christ had ended, and that can never happen.

3. John 6:37 says, “All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise ________ out.”

4. Hebrews 6:1,2 says that we are not to lay again the foundations which have already been laid: concerning repentance, faith, ________________, laying on of hands, the resurrection, and eternal judgment.

Note: If a foundation has been properly laid, then it will last a lifetime. If you trust Jesus Christ once, then you need never make that decision again — that foundation has been laid. He will last for your “eternal lifetime.” Likewise, if you have followed the Lord in believer’s baptism according to the Bible, then you need never get baptized again.

2. If a person was baptized before he was truly born again, then it is his duty to be baptized again. The first time was ______________________, because there was no death to the old life of sin — for he was still a lost sinner.

3. ______, baptism should be repeated if a person was baptized in the wrong manner.

4. If a person’s baptism consisted of being __________________ or poured upon, then it was not done according to the Bible. The person’s duty is to now obey the Lord and get baptized in the proper manner.

6. ______, baptism should be repeated if a person was baptized by an unscriptural church.

7. ____, a person should not get baptized again if he was saved first, and then baptized in the proper manner.

8. To submit ourselves to two baptisms once we have been saved is totally against the Bible. It would then be picturing two ____________, two ______________, and two __________________________ of Christ.

How The Bible Says You Can Be Saved

1. Do you realize that you have sinned? (Rom. 3:23) (I John 1:8)

2. Do you realize the penalty for your sin? (Rom. 6:23)

3. Do you realize that if you die in your sin, you will go to hell?  (Psa. 9:17) (Prov. 15:24) (Luke 12:4,5)

4. Do you realize that the Lord Jesus Christ paid that death penalty for you? (Rom. 5:8) (I Pet. 3:18) (I Pet. 2:24)

5. Do you realize that it is only through the shed blood of the Lord Jesus Christ that you can be saved, and not through any good works of your own? (I John 1:7) (I Pet. 1:18,19) (Eph. 2:8,9) (Titus 3:5-7)

6. Do you realize that after Jesus died for your sins, He arose victorious from the grave the third day, proving that His sacrifice was sufficient to pay for all of the sins of the whole world? (I Cor. 15:1-4)

7. Do you realize that to be saved you must repent (you must have the desire to turn from your sin and false beliefs, and for the Lord Jesus Christ to cleanse you from all your sin)? (Luke 13:3) (Acts 3:19) (Acts 26:20)

8. Do you realize that after you get saved, God’s first command for you is for you to get baptized and then to live for Him?  (Acts 2:41) (II Cor. 5:17)

9. Are you ready to now pray and ask the Lord Jesus Christ to forgive you of all your sins, and to save you? (John 1:12) (Rom. 10:13) (I John 5:13)

* If you are, then bow your head right now and confess to God that you are a sinner deserving judgment. Ask the Lord Jesus Christ to forgive you of all your sins, and to save you. Ask Him to cleanse your life, and to give you the power to live for Him. Ask Him to lead you to a good, Bible-preaching church, where you can follow the first command after salvation — that of getting baptized and publicly confessing your faith in Him. Ask Him to help you find some good Christian friends to encourage you in the faith and to help you grow.

q — I have just asked the Lord Jesus Christ to save me.
