Description
Should drums be used in the church? Should drums ever be used by Christians at all? We are constantly hearing today that it is necessary for churches to use drums, if they want to reach the culture. Is that really true?
If churches must use drums to reach a culture that uses them, then why did missionaries not need drums to reach the very cultures where those drums originated?
“The Conga drums are believed to have roots from both Cuban and African music” (http://musiced.about.com/od/percussions/p/congadrums.htm). “The first known bass drums… are believed to have existed as early as 2500 BC in Sumeria” (http://musiced.about.com/od/percussions/p/bassdrum.htm). “…Bongos (drums) also have roots from Africa” (http://musiced.about.com/od/percussions/p/bongodrums.htm). “Carved images of these instruments (kettle drums) from Mesopotamia date back to at least 4000 B.C…” “In Africa, similar instruments are built out of carved wood or hollowed tree trunks..” ((http://musiced.about.com).
So drums existed during the days
of the Old and New Testaments,
but God’s people did not use
them—until this generation of Contemporary Christianity.
“93 percent of the largest Christian churches use drums in some way. Today, African, Brazilian, Indian and Korean drums have become frequent aspects of worship services…” (http://www.religionlink.org/tip_070529b.php). Missionaries reached all of those above named groups with the gospel of Jesus Christ—without using drums, so the argument that we need to use drums to reach this generation is clearly false.
Drums have always been associated with pagan practices and spiritism.
Witch doctors (a practice known as Shamanism) used drums in their communication with the spirit world. “Native American shaman drums have been used for generations by American Indians for drumming circles, healing… In Native American history it has been the shaman, medicine man or witch doctor who has been looked to as a spiritual and political leader.” (http://www.nativeamericandrums
.net/native-american-shaman-drums.html). That was a demonic religion and leadership. Missionaries thus went to them: “To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins” (Acts 26:18, KJV).
That demonic aspect of drums
is still present today.
“Mickey Hart, drummer for the Grateful Dead, has traveled the world researching the power of drums. ‘Everywhere you look on the planet people are USING DRUMS TO ALTER CONSCIOUS-NESS. There have been many times when I’ve felt as if THE DRUM HAS CARRIED ME TO AN OPEN DOOR INTO ANOTHER WORLD.’” (4-6-06, David Cloud, fbns@wayoflife.org). That world is the demonic realm. A Voodoo priestess said, “THE RHYTHM IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE MEANING OF THE WORDS. Our gods RESPOND TO RHYTHM ABOVE ALL ELSE” (a Macumba priestess in Brazil, quoted in African Rhythm & Sensibility) (4-6-06, David Cloud, fbns@wayoflife.org). But Bill Gaither said, “God speaks through all different kinds of musical styles” (4-6-06, David Cloud, fbns@wayoflife.org). Mr. Gaither is greatly deceived, and has led thousands of people astray.
The fact is that God does NOT speak through most types of
music; but the world, the
flesh, and the devil does.
Even the world testifies that it is so. Gene Simmons, of the rock group Kiss, said, “That’s what rock is all about…(immorality) with a 100 megaton bomb, THE BEAT!” Irwin Silber said, “The great strength of rock ‘n’ roll lies in ITS BEAT …it is a music which is basically… (immoral).” Tina Turner said, “Rock and roll is… naughty” (4-6-06, David Cloud, fbns@wayoflife.org).
God is very specific on music: “Speaking to yourselves in PSALMS and HYMNS and SPIRITUAL SONGS, singing and making MELODY in your heart to the Lord.” (Ephesians 5:19, KJV).
For Israel’s calling, GOD said to use TRUMPETS—NOT DRUMS.
“And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Make thee two TRUMPETS of silver; of a whole piece shalt thou make them: that thou mayest use them for the calling of the assembly, and for the journeying of the camps” (Numbers 10:1-2, KJV).
Forget the percussion argument (timbrels, pianos, etc.), we are talking specifically about drums. Drums existed in the Old and New Testaments, and in pioneer missionary days when they reached native tribes—but they never used drums to do it. TURN to the LORD JESUS CHRIST right now, and ask Him to FORGIVE you, and to CLEANSE you, and to SAVE you.
The Lord Jesus Christ is the Son of God; God Almighty in the flesh: Creator of heaven and earth. He is Master, Savior, and Messiah. He died on the cross for you, and gave His pure, sinless blood to pay your sin debt. The Lord Jesus Christ arose from the grave the third day, proving that His blood fully paid for your sins. To be saved, you must CALL upon Him from your HEART. “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the LORD JESUS, and shalt BELIEVE in thine HEART that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be SAVED.” “For whosoever shall CALL upon the NAME of the LORD shall be SAVED” (Holy Bible, Romans 10:9,13, KJV).
After we ask the Lord Jesus Christ to save us, then God instructs us to openly confess Him by getting baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. When we go under the water, it pictures death to the old life of sin, and when we come up out of the water, it pictures a new life serving the Lord Jesus Christ.
Yes, I just asked the Lord Jesus Christ to save me, and I desire to now live for Him.
