Chapter 4

IV. What Is The Basis of Salvation?

1. I Corinthians 3:11 says, “For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is ________________________.”

2. According to Hebrews 12:2, Jesus is the “author and finisher of our __________; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

Jesus is the foundation  of our faith, because He paid

the penalty   for sin on the cross.

3. I Peter 2:24 says, “Who his own self bare ______ sins in his own body on the tree.”

4. According to Hebrews 9:22, “without shedding of __________ is no remission.”

5. Remember that “the wages of sin is __________.” (Romans 6:23)

6. I John 1:7 says, “the __________ of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.”

But if it is death  and blood  that pays for sin, why does

it have to be Jesus’ blood? Why can a person not die

and pay for his own sin and enter heaven?

Illustration: Suppose that you decide to paint the lawn mower with a good oil base paint. So you buy the paint, and start brushing it on. You decide that you would like to keep the brush to use again, because it did such a nice job. So, you go fill a pail half full of soapy water, and begin to swish the brush back and forth in the soapy water.

Much to your surprise, when you pull the paint brush out of the pail, it is just as covered with paint as before! What went wrong?

Suddenly it hits you — you used oil base paint for this job — not latex or water-based paint! Water has no effect at all on an oil base

paint. To get it clean, you will need an oil-based solvent.

Even so it is with sin. Your own blood cannot free you of your sin debt,

or anyone else from theirs, because it is already tainted with sin itself.

Your blood cannot overpower something which has already overpowered it — sin.

7. Romans 5:12 says, “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon ______ men, for that all have sinned.”

8. According to Psalm 51:5, “Behold, I was shapen in iniquity, and in ______ did my mother conceive me.”

Question: Was not Jesus born as a man? Why didn’t He have this sin nature passed on down to Him?

9. Hebrews 2:9 says, “But we see __________, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.”

10. Jesus was certainly of real human flesh, as further shown in Hebrews 2:14-16. “Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of __________ and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham.”

Jesus had a real body of flesh and blood, but He was

not born with a sin nature passed down to Him

because of His miraculous virgin birth.

11. We see the announcement of Jesus’ birth being made to Mary in Luke 1:30-33. “And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name __________. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest.”

12. To this news, she immediately has a question in verse 34, “How shall this be, seeing I know not a ______?”

13. The angel replies in verse 35, “The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that ________ thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.”

Note: God had chosen a pure young lady, Mary; and she was engaged to a pure young man, Joseph. Luke 1:27 says, “To a ____________ espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary.”

Joseph was naturally confused about the whole situation, but he was told by the angel of the Lord in Matthew 1:20,21, “Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the ____________________. And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.”

So we see that Jesus was fully a man in the flesh, but He was also God in the flesh. He is holy and without sin, for He is God!

14. John 1:14 says of the Lord Jesus, “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his __________, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.”

15. The Bible clearly shows that Jesus is God. Isaiah 9:6 says, “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty ______, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”

16. Matthew 1:23 tells us, “Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, ________ with us.”

Jesus’ blood is the only blood that can save, because it is sinless blood.

His miraculous conception and birth, and His perfect life

was necessary for pure, sinless blood.

17. I Peter 1:18,19 says, “Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without ______________ and without spot.”

18. I Peter 2:21,22 also says, “For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps: Who did no ______, neither was guile found in his mouth.”

19. The Bible says in II Corinthians 5:21, “For he hath made him to be sin for ____, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.”

20. Romans 5:8 says, “But God commendeth his love toward us, in

that, while we were yet sinners, ____________ died for us.”

21. According to I Peter 2:24, He “bare ______ sins in his own body on the tree.”

The basis of salvation is the sinless blood of Jesus Christ

shed for our sins. Jesus’ sacrifice was fully accepted

with the Father, as was shown by His resurrection

from the dead, and by His being seated by the Father.

22. I Corinthians 15:3,4, says, “For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he ________ again the third day according to the scriptures.”

23. The Bible further states in verses 17,20, “And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your ________.” “But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept.”

24. According to Hebrews 9:12, “Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own __________ he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.”

25. Verse 24 of that same chapter says, “For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into ____________ itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us.”

Question: Do you realize the tremendous cost to obtain your salvation? This was no little matter to redeem your soul! If your salvation depends upon you, then Christ died for nothing. Galatians 2:21 says, “I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in ________.”
