Chapter 7

VII. What Happens When You Sin After You Are Saved?

1. I John 2:1 says, “My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin ______.”

Note: It is God’s will that we do not sin. He wants us to be righteous and holy. That is why we need to be studying His Word, the Bible.

2. Psalm 119:11 states, “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not ______ against thee.”

3. Verse 9 of that same chapter says, “Wherewithal shall a young man ____________ his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word.”

4. John 17:14-17 says, “I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. Sanctify them through thy truth: thy ________ is truth.”

5. According to I Peter 1:15, 16, God says, “But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; Because it is written, Be ye ________; for I am holy.”

Note: God left His Word for us to read — not only to learn how to be saved, but also to know how we ought to then live.

6. The Bible says, “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in __________________________: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.” (II Timothy 3:16,17)

7. Romans 12:2 says, “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your ________, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”

Note: God wants us to live right! And the instruction to do so is in His holy Word, the Bible. Make sure that you read it every day. Does that mean that Christians are perfect? Read on to see.

8. I John 1:8 says, “If we say that we have no ______, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.”

9. The Bible says in Ecclesiastes 7:20, “For there is not a just man upon __________, that doeth good, and sinneth not.”

Christians are not perfect — just forgiven. We still sin.

But the more we grow in our Christian lives in the Word

of God, the less we should be sinning.

Note: But what happens when we do sin?

10. Please look again at I John 2:1,2. “My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the __________________: And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.”

Note: An advocate is like a lawyer — someone who represents your case before the judge. When we get saved, Jesus is no longer our Judge, but now He becomes our defense, our lawyer in the court of heaven.

What does He do about our sin? God cannot allow sin in heaven. Notice carefully what that verse says, “Jesus Christ the righteous.” He does not excuse our sin - He forgives it based upon His own righteous sacrifice on the cross.

Look at verse 2. “He is the propitiation for our sins.” That word means satisfaction. His death on the cross totally satisfied the payment for our sins. The sins before we were saved, and the sins after we are saved — are all forgiven on the basis of Jesus’ one sacrifice for us on the cross.

11. II Corinthians 5:21 says, “For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the __________________________ of God in him.”

Note: How righteous is the righteousness of God? Why, it is perfect! Matthew 5:48 says, “Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is ______________.” So in Jesus Christ, we have the righteousness of God; because Jesus is totally righteous; and He is God; and He willingly paid the price for our sins!

Note: Stop and carefully think! Are you truly trusting in Jesus’ shed blood as the payment for your sins? If you are, then your salvation totally depends upon Him — not upon you.

That is why true salvation  can never be lost — because

it depends upon One who is perfect — Jesus Christ.

Note: Does this mean that we can just live as we please? No, that is not true at all, as you shall see!

12. Hebrews 12:5,6 says, “And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the ____________________ of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him: For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.”

Note: If you sin, God is going to come after you to discipline you, and nothing you do escapes the eyes of the Lord. Proverbs 15:3 says, “The eyes of the Lord are in __________ place, beholding the evil and the good.” God disciplines His children in all sorts of ways, as you will see by the following Scriptures.

13. Some people in Corinth were not observing the Lord’s Supper in the proper way, and I Corinthians 11:30-32 says, “For this cause many are weak and ____________ among you, and many sleep. For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged. But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world.”

Note: God can make disobedient Christians get sick to get their attention. (Now do not go around accusing every Christian who is sick, that they have done some sin for which God is chastening them — read the Book of Job.)

But clearly God does sometimes use sickness as a

means of discipline to get His people’s attention. Notice

that this passage also teaches that if a Christian does not

listen to God trying to correct him/her, then God may

allow him/her to die early: “and many sleep.”

I John 5:16,17 says, “If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto __________: I do not say that he shall pray for it. All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death.”

God does not always kill people for their sin, but sometimes He does if they will not listen to Him. Read Acts 5:1-11. What was the sin which resulted in the death of these two Christians? ___________

Notice back under number 13, that if we will judge ourselves, then God will not have to come after us to discipline us. God’s desire is that we read His Word, and willingly and quickly correct our mistakes. If we will do that, we will find Him ready and willing to forgive us.

I John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to ______________ us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” The moment that you realize you have done wrong, you should pray and ask the Lord to forgive you.

14. Psalm 130:3,4 says, “If thou, Lord, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand? But there is ______________________ with thee, that thou mayest be feared.”

15. The Bible says in Psalm 38:18, “For I will ______________ mine iniquity; I will be sorry for my sin.”

Note: If you will declare your sin, that is, if you will admit your sin before God has to come after you, things will go much better for

you. Be quick to confess your sin when you realize that you have done wrong.

The word confess  means “to agree with God.” When

you confess your sin, it is not a time to blame someone

else — that is not confession, that is accusation. If you

did wrong, then be humble and admit it, because one

day you will stand before GOD alone.

Romans 14:12 says, “So then every ______ of us shall give account of himself to God.” It would be good for you to go back and review the Bible Course, “Bible Doctrine I, Book 1, Salvation,” to refresh your memory on how a Christian’s sin affects his fellowship with God — not his relationship to God.
