Chapter 5

V. How Long Must A Person Stay In Hell?

A. The length of time.

    1. According to Psalm 49:19, “they shall __________ see light.”

    2. Matthew 25:41 tells us that the devil and his angles will be cast “into ______________________ fire.”

    3. Verse 46 of that same chapter refers to lost people, and says they “shall go into _____________________ punishment.”

    4. When the rich man in hell asked Abraham to send Lazarus to help him, Abraham said, “they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to ____, that would come from thence.” (Luke 16:26)

Note: There is no way to ever pass from hell to heaven, nor is there any way to ever pass from heaven to hell.

This not only tells us that people in hell will be there

for eternity with no way out, but it also tells us that we

who are saved never need fear about being cast

out of heaven some day in eternity.

   5. Jude 13 refers to the unsaved and says, “to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness ______________.”

Note: How long will people be in hell? Forever. They will be there for all eternity.

Why cannot God let them out after years of suffering down there? Read on to find the answer to that question.

B. The reason for the time.

    1. Hebrews 9:22 says that “without shedding of blood is no __________________.”

Note: “Remission” means, “a dismissal, a release, or forgiveness.” (Vine’s Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words)

    2. According to Hebrews 10:4, it is not possible for the blood of animals to take away ______.

    3. Hebrews 9:11,12 says that Jesus Christ by His own __________ entered in once into the holy place to obtain eternal redemption for us.

Note: There is no “dismissal, release, or forgiveness” of sins, except through the perfect blood of Jesus Christ. Animal sacrifices cannot forgive sins. Human sacrifices cannot forgive sins, because “______ have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). Only Christ can save, because He, God in the flesh, was born of a miraculous virgin birth — thus, with no sin nature like us. Then He lived a perfect life, and died in our place. “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for ____.” (Romans 5:8)

The reason that people must spend eternity in hell if they

reject Jesus Christ, is because no amount of suffering on

their part can ever take away one of their sins that they committed.

Only the pure and sinless blood of Jesus

Christ can do that, and they rejected that while

they had the chance in life to accept it.

Yes, they will suffer a lot in one thousand years in hell; but after all those years, all of their sins will still be held against them, because suffering cannot take away sins — only the blood of Christ can.

Illustration: It would be something like a criminal who is sitting in jail for stealing a million dollars from an armored truck. He had taken the money home to his house. The police then picked him up as a suspect. While they were questioning him at the station, an electrical short had started his house on fire, and the money was completely burnt. He had gone to trial, and the judge had sentenced him to remain in jail until every penny of the million dollars was paid back.

What are his chances of doing that? He is sitting in jail with no job. He has no way to earn any money. How much of the million dollars can he repay in 10 years? Not one penny.

How much could he pay back in 50 years? Not one penny.

In his situation, he would never get out of jail, because he would have no means of paying his debt.

Even so, a lost person will never be able to get out of hell, because he has no way to pay for his sins — only the blood of Christ could have done that for him, and he rejected that.

Why cannot people in hell have another chance to

accept Jesus Christ as their Savior?” The answer

is simple — they sinned in this life, and so they had

to accept the remedy for sin in this life.

Illustration: Suppose that a man gets into an automobile accident, and loses a lot of blood. The problem is that he has a rare blood type, and the only one that can help him is one man. But that man has witnessed to him many times, and he does not like him. Rather than accept the blood of this “religious fanatic,” he says, “I can make it without your God, and I can make it without your blood! Get out of here!”

The Christian sadly leaves, and the bleeding man dies about an hour later. Like the rich man in Luke 16:22,23, he immediately finds himself in hell in torments. He cries out, “Wait, I will take a blood transfusion from him!” Will his request do him any good now? No, because he is already dead.

Illustration: What about a man that gets bit by a rattlesnake and says, “I am tough. I do not need to get an antidote!” But later, when he is all swollen, he decides that he should go to the hospital. On the way there, he dies.

Will it help him any now to inject the antidote into his body? No. The antidote could only help him while he was alive.

A person’s only hope of going to heaven is to get

Jesus’ blood applied to his sins while he is yet alive.

Has Jesus’ blood been applied to your sins? Hebrews 9:27 says, “And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the ________________.”
