Jerry’s Occupation: Postal Carrier

Jerry was born in Greenville, Michigan, on January 20, 1943.  He carried mail for 32 years, (first, in the neighboring city of Belding, and then in Greenville), so his face was well-known in the area.  Despite the bills that come in the mail, people still look forward to the mailman coming.  “As cold waters to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country.” (Holy Bible, Proverbs 25:25, KJV)

The mailman gets to enjoy the beautiful sunny days—but he also has to endure the rain, snow, and ice, at other times.  People  count on him each day to get the mail delivered.

Some wonderful things in life come through the sacrifice of others.

Jerry did not really understand about a special sacrifice that was made for him, until he was 34 years old.  His wife, Carol, learned about it, first.

That sacrifice was this: “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” (Holy Bible, Romans 5:8, KJV)  Why did Jesus Christ die for us on the cross?  To pay the penalty for our sin.  “Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree.” (the cross) (Holy Bible, 1 Peter 2:24a, KJV)

Why are we sinners?

Did God make us that way?

No, God made everything perfect.  “And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good.” (Holy Bible, Genesis 1:31, KJV)  We were created in God’s image, and God is good—not evil.  “God created man in his own image.” (Holy Bible, Genesis 1:27, KJV)

God did not create us

as robots.  He made us

with a free will—with the

ability to make choices in life.

Jerry made the choice to be

a postal carrier—he was not a robot doing that job.

We have the choice to obey,

or to disobey God.

Adam and Eve chose to disobey God’s one and only rule in the Garden of Eden: “Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:  But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.” (Holy Bible, Genesis 2:16-17, KJV)

When Jerry first learned that Carol had repented of her sins, and asked the Lord Jesus Christ to save her, he thought that he had literally lost the love of his life to someone else—but Carol did not start preaching at him.  She quietly followed the Bible’s instructions: “Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives;  While they behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear.  Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel;  But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.” (1 Peter 3:1-4, KJV)

God rewarded Carol by sending an old friend of Jerry’s, who gave him the gospel, and Jerry asked the Lord Jesus Christ to save him.

Jerry then became a faithful “heavenly mailman,” delivering the gospel message to people at their homes; at park ministries; at parade ministries; and around the world by putting together Bible Study booklets.  And now his life story is still speaking, giving the gospel to you!

Who is the Lord Jesus Christ?

He is the virgin born Son of God; God Almighty in the flesh; Creator of heaven and earth.  He died on the cross, giving His pure, sinless blood to pay the wages of our sin.  “For the wages of sin is death.” (Rom. 6:23a)  “Christ died for our sins;” and when He “Rose again the third day,” it proved that He successfully paid our penalty. (1 Cor. 15:3b, 4b)

#1—REPENT—Jesus said, “Except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.” (Luke 13:3)  “Therefore also now, saith the LORD, turn ye even to me with all your heart.” (Joel 2:12)  “And of some have compassion, making a difference:  And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh.” (Jude 22-23)  “For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation.” (2 Cor. 7:10)  “Repent and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance.” (Acts 26:20) “The goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance.” (Rom. 2:4)

#2—RECEIVE—“But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that BELIEVE on his NAME.” (John 1:12)  “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the LORD JESUS, and shalt BELIEVE in thine HEART that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be SAVED.”  “For whosoever shall CALL upon the NAME of the LORD shall be SAVED.” (Rom. 10:9,13)

What if you were to die in the next 24 hours?  The decision from your heart will be the difference between heaven and hell for you.

#3—REJOICE—“Then they that gladly received his word were baptized.” (Acts 2:41a)  If you have now called upon the Lord for salvation, it will bring joy and gladness to your heart when you obey God, and get baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Baptism does not save us—it is God’s first command after salvation, and it is our public testimony of identifying with Jesus’ death and burial (as we are placed down under the water)—and with His resurrection (as we are brought up out of the water), to now serve Him.  “Even so we also should walk in newness of life.” (Romans 6:4b)

Yes, I just called upon the Lord Jesus Christ to save me, and I do want to now walk in that newness of life.
